Goodwin is the son of former Michigan offensive lineman Jonathan Goodwin and the nephew of former Michigan lineman Harold Goodwin, so the chances of him following in those footsteps were strong from the start. (Side note: In the days before the transfer portal, Jonathan transferred to Michigan from Ohio University after his freshman year.) The younger Goodwin was offered by Michigan in April of 2022. His father, who coaches for Providence Day, was also presumably an influence on 2024 quarterback Jadyn Davis picking the Wolverines.

Channing Goodwin shows some nice body control and the ability to snatch the ball out of the air. He also has solid field awareness and seems to know where the open spots are on the field, as well as good recognition of where his body is in relation to the sideline.

Otherwise, I generally find Goodwin to be a so-so athlete. He has just adequate speed and does not seem to accelerate well off the ball. His ability to separate in college is going to be a question mark, and his route running is somewhat imprecise.

Overall, Goodwin appears to be a 3-star level prospect with a chance to be an adequate possession receiver. His size and athleticism are not noteworthy, but awareness and reliable hands can be helpful enough to get on the field. As the son of a former Pro Bowl offensive lineman, he should know how to block. He also has a sturdy enough build to be able to take some contact and gain a few yards after the catch. I see him a little bit like Greg Mathews, who was inexplicably the #23 wide receiver and #174 overall in the class of 2006, but who ended up with 110 catches for 1,195 yards (10.6 yards/catch) and 6 touchdowns from 2006-2009 by way of consistent hands and being available.

Michigan now has 16 commitments in the class of 2024 and ranks #1 in the country overall in recruiting. Goodwin is the first receiver to pledge in the class and may be joined by high school teammate Jordan Shipp at some point.
