2015 Season Countdown: #73 Brady Pallante

Brady Pallante (image via Maize and Blue News)
Name: Brady Pallante
Height: 6'0"
Weight: 276 lbs.
High school: Naples (FL) Barron Collier
Position: Fullback
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number:  #45
Last year: I ranked Pallante #88 and said he would redshirt. He redshirted.

Pallante was an undersized nose tackle last year and did not see the field at all. When Jim Harbaugh was hired and spring practice began, many were surprised to find that Pallante had a new jersey and a new position. One major reason for the position change is likely that both fullbacks (Joe Kerridge, Sione Houma) are seniors that will need to be replaced in 2016. Harbaugh also probably has a plan to work a jumbo fullback into the backfield, and that role could be filled by Pallante or perhaps some like defensive tackle Maurice Hurst, Jr. Pallante won't be a starter this season and probably won't be an extremely valuable member of the offense, but he could see an occasional snap in certain packages.

Prediction: Backup fullback

Michigan releases spring 2015 roster

Brady Pallante is a fullback now. Brady Pallante is not #23.
Michigan released its spring roster on Monday as the Wolverines begin spring practice on Tuesday (LINK). Here are some notable updates to the roster.

Ian Bunting: Bunting is up to 6'7" and 243 lbs. Michigan needs help at tight end this fall, so 243 lbs. is a good sign of him developing physically. He should be up over 250 lbs. by the fall.

Brian Cole: Cole, a true freshman early enrollee, is wearing #81. He's listed at 6'2", 200 lbs.

Ross Douglas: Douglas was recruited as a cornerback, moved to slot receiver, moved to running back, and now is back at corner. Still wearing #29, he is now listed as Ross Taylor-Douglas.

Derrick Green: Green is listed at 5'11" and 234 lbs.

Ty Isaac: Isaac is listed at 6'3" and 240 lbs.

Alex Malzone: Malzone, a true freshman early enrollee, is wearing #12. He's listed at 6'2", 218 lbs.

Brady Pallante: Pallante came to Michigan as a nose tackle prospect and is now listed as a redshirt freshman, 6'0", 276 lb. fullback wearing #45.

Terry Richardson: Richardson is listed as a redshirt junior cornerback and is finally nearing close-to-acceptable weight at 174 lbs. at 5'9".

Matt Thompson: Thompson is a new addition as a walk-on quarterback from Cincinnati (OH) Indian Hills. He's listed at 6'5", 214 lbs. as a redshirt freshman. Here are Thompson's Hudl highlights from his senior year (LINK). His delivery is a little bit wonky, but he doesn't look too bad for a walk-on. He's not a bad guy to have available for running a scout team and such. It also looks like he's hit a growth spurt since high school.

Ryan Tice: Tice is a 6'1", 177 lb. walk-on who enrolled early out of Saline (MI) Saline. I mainly note this because Michigan graduated both their punter and kicker, so Tice might be competing for one of those jobs, along with walk-on Kenny Allen (punter) and 2015 signee Andrew David (kicker).

2014 Season Countdown: #88 Brady Pallante

Brady Pallante
Name: Brady Pallante
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 255 lbs.
High school: Naples (FL) Barron Collier
Position: Defensive tackle
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Pallante was a senior in high school.
Final TTB Rating: 70

Pallante is going to be an interesting and perhaps controversial story for Michigan fans. He originally committed to the Wolverines as a greyshirt player, meaning that he would attend Michigan on his own dime until 2015 before getting his scholarship. Of course, he didn't have many other options - the one other team that courted him was Michigan's first opponent in 2014, the Appalachian State Mountaineers. As the class wore on, Pallante was offered a full and immediate scholarship to Michigan.

Pallante is a short, wrestler style of a nose tackle. He's well over 255 lbs. now, but he will still have some weight to add this fall. I do not believe it will take Pallante long to learn the technique Michigan's coaches want him to learn because he's a state championship wrestler who understands hand position, leverage, and the like. However, he will need to bulk up and get as strong as possible so he can contend with Big Ten linemen. Michigan has several nose tackles who are north of 300 lbs. already, so Pallante should be able to redshirt this season while waiting his turn behind players like Ondre Pipkins, Maurice Hurst Jr., and Willie Henry.

Prediction: Redshirt

2014 Recruiting Awards

Michigan signee Jabrill Peppers
It's that time of year again, where I pick out the best and least best of the recruiting class and we can argue about it for the next four or five years. Here's a look back at my choices over the last five years (2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013). And on with the show:

Best Overall Recruit: CB Jabrill Peppers
Peppers is the 247 Composite #3 player in the country and for good reason. Michigan's lone 5-star in the class, he won four state championships in his four years of high school football. He has the ability to play four positions (RB, WR, CB, S) in college, although he was recruited as a corner; Michigan will also probably use him in the return game. Peppers has the size, speed, and competitive attitude to be an All-American and a high draft pick in a few years.

Best Offensive Recruit: WR Drake Harris
I think this wide receiver class is loaded with Harris, Maurice Ways, and Freddy Canteen. In my opinion, these three could turn out to be almost as good as the trio of Braylon Edwards, Jason Avant, and Steve Breaston playing together in the mid-2000's. Harris has the best coordination, speed, and athleticism of the group, so as long as he stays healthy, I think he'll be the top guy on this side of the ball.

Best Defensive Recruit: CB Jabrill Peppers
See above.

Recruit Most Likely to Make an Early Impact: CB Jabrill Peppers
Peppers will instantly be one of the four best athletes in the secondary, so it's a question of where and how soon he should play. Whether he plays corner, safety, or slot corner, he should be on the field as soon as he arrives on campus. I do want to pump the breaks on him being an instant starter at corner because technique is so important, but he could play over the slot if the coaches want him there. He might also be able to challenge Dennis Norfleet for kick return duties, and both of Michigan's punt returners (Drew Dileo, Jeremy Gallon) graduated, so that job will be an open competition, too.

Fastest Recruit: CB Jabrill Peppers
This is like a broken record, so I'll also mention that Drake Harris can leave some people in the dust if he recovers from his hamstring issues.

Strongest Recruit: DT Brady Pallante
Pallante benches 370 lbs. and squats 580 lbs., but his best quality is probably the leverage he's able to use on the defensive line. Fellow defensive tackle Bryan Mone is significantly larger, but Pallante plays like a guy who's 30 lbs. heavier.

Best Under-the-Radar Recruit: WR Maurice Ways
This is a really tough choice between Pallante and Ways, but both are pretty modest 3-stars in the 247 Composite rankings. I'm going with Ways because I think he will be the more acclaimed player of the two. He reminds me of Michigan's 6'3", 215 lb. receivers of yesteryear. If Michigan has a good quarterback situation down the road, I think Ways could be a 1,000-yard receiver.

Most Overrated Recruit: DT Bryan Mone
Perhaps more so than in other recent years, I think most of these guys are ranked just about right, with Ways and Pallante being the exceptions. I was extremely high on Mone early in his recruitment, and his junior film was very exciting. However, he gained a lot of weight before his senior year, didn't put up great stats, and then didn't stand out at the Under Armour All-American Game. I think Mone is probably ranked fairly accurately by the recruiting sites (#111 in the 247 Composite), but Michigan fans expecting instant domination are probably in for a bit of a disappointment.

Most Likely to Redshirt: OT Juwann Bushell-Beatty
Bushell-Beatty is a developmental prospect, and his performance at the Under Armour All-American Game solidified that position for me. He's not a great natural athlete, and he was out of shape in early January. He needs to redistribute some weight, get stronger, work on his footwork, etc. Provided that Michigan's line can stay healthy (an iffy proposition considering redshirt sophomore Erik Magnuson is missing the entire spring), Bushell-Beatty will probably be planted firmly on the sideline this season.

Personal Favorite Recruit: WR Maurice Ways
This is a tough choice, too. There are several guys that I could pick, and the obvious choice for most people is probably Peppers. I also like Mone (his family story is inspiring), WR Freddy Canteen (a somewhat under-the-radar route running specialist), and Pallante (the classic underdog). But I was high on Ways from the first time I saw his film, a lot of people disagreed with me, and he seems to have a good attitude when it comes to improving, blocking, etc.

Brady Pallante no longer a greyshirt

Naples (FL) Barron Collier defensive tackle Brady Pallante
Naples (FL) Barron Collier defensive tackle Brady Pallante, who committed as a greyshirt player in February, is now a full-fledged member of the 2014 recruiting class. A greyshirt would have meant that he would graduate from high school in 2014, pay his own way to school in his first semester, and then join the team in 2015.

Here's his commitment post from April. As a senior here in 2013, he had 60 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, and a 31-yard fumble return for a touchdown.

The same thing happened in the case of Jeremy Clark from the 2012 class. He was offered a greyshirt role, accepted, and eventually found that the class had room for him.

Recruiting Update: April 8, 2013

Naples (FL) Barron Collier defensive tackle Brady Pallante
COMMITMENT
Naples (FL) Barron Collier defensive tackle Brady Pallante committed to Michigan.

OFF THE BOARD
Cincinnati (OH) Moeller outside linebacker Sam Hubbard committed to Ohio State.  Hubbard had been committed to Notre Dame as a lacrosse player, but he has started to realize his football potential and chose the Buckeyes instead.  As a probable strongside linebacker, this might open the door for Cleveland (OH) St. Ignatius linebacker Kyle Berger to committed to Michigan; Berger's recruitment appeared to have been a Michigan vs. Ohio State battle, but the Wolverines still need a SAM in the 2014 class while the Buckeyes have potentially filled that hole.

Wellington (FL) Palm Beach Central offensive tackle K.C. McDermott committed to Miami.  He had been expected to choose between Miami and Notre Dame, and he had not visited Michigan.

Washington (DC) Friendship Collegiate cornerback D'Andre Payne committed to Tennessee.  Michigan made Payne's top ten list, but he never showed much interest.  Tennessee seemed to be the favorite for a while, so this wasn't a surprise.

MISCELLANEOUS
Michigan hosted a ton of visitors over the past week, since it was spring break for a lot of high schoolers.

Coming out of the weekend, Michigan appears to lead for a few of those prospects: Jabrill Peppers, Juwann Bushell-Beatty, and K.J. Williams.

Visitors: First week of April 2013

#73 Juwann Bushell-Beatty and #5 Jabrill Peppers (image via Northjersey.com)
Due to Easter and spring break, lots of kids will be off this week, too, and have a chance to stop by Michigan's campus throughout the week.

Trey Barksdale - LB - Clinton (MI) Clintondale: Barksdale is a 6'0", 190 lb. linebacker prospect with no offers at this time.  As a junior in 2012, he had 30 solo tackles, 1 interception, and 1 fumble recovery returned for a touchdown.  He looks like a player who would be a ways down in the pecking order for a scholarship offer, and Michigan is reportedly looking for just one more linebacker (in addition to Michael Ferns III) in the 2014 class. UPDATE: Barksdale did not make it to campus on Tuesday but may visit later in the week.

David Beedle - DT - Clarkston (MI) Clarkston: Beedle is a 6'5", 250 lb. defensive tackle with no offers at this time.

Ray Buford - WR - Southfield (MI) Southfield: Buford is a 6'0", 170 lb. wideout from the class of 2015.  He has no offers at this time.  As a sophomore in 2012, he had 52 receptions for more than 500 yards and 5 touchdowns.  Buford also visited Michigan for the game against Northwestern back in November.  Michigan's coaching staff seems to want him as a cornerback.

Juwann Bushell-Beatty - OT - Paramus (NJ) Catholic: Bushell-Beatty is a 6'7", 310 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, and Rutgers, among others.  The 247 Composite rankings place him as a 3-star, the #35 offensive tackle, and the #456 player nationally.

Cole Chewins - TE - Clarkston (MI) Clarkston: Chewins is a 6'7", 210 lb. tight end for the class of 2015.  He has no offers at this time.  Some sites talk about him as if he's a linebacker, but he looks too long and lanky to be a linebacker; I think he will likely end up at tight end or defensive end.

Rob Dowdy - OT - Westerville (OH) South: Dowdy is a 6'7", 250 lb. prospect from the class of 2015.  He has offers from Indiana and Kentucky so far.  He visited Michigan a couple weeks ago, so he appears to be strongly interested in the Wolverines.  Westerville South is the high school of Marcus Ball (Arizona State), whom Michigan offered in the 2013 class.

Lawrence Gordon - DE - Saginaw (MI) Arthur Hill: Gordon is a 6'5", 230 lb. defensive end from the class of 2016, so he just finished his freshman year.  He has no offers at this time, but he has recently visited Michigan State and Ohio State.

Jamarco Jones - OG - Chicago (IL) De La Salle: Jones is a 6'5", 290 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Tennessee, among many others.  He has expressed mild interest in Michigan and seems likely to stay somewhere in the midwest, but he does not seem to be very close to committing anywhere.  His 247 Composite ranking (which combines the rankings of Rivals, Scout, and 247 - along with ESPN whenever they rank players) puts him at the #4 offensive tackle and the #53 overall player in the 2014 class.

Evan Mallory - OG - Brownsburg (IN) Brownsburg: Mallory is a 6'4", 285 lb. prospect for the class of 2015.  He has no offers at this point.  Mallory has good size but is a little slow afoot, but if he can improve his foot speed, he has a chance to become a legitimate prospect.

Lawrence Marshall - DE - Southfield (MI) Southfield: Marshall is a 6'3", 215 lb. weakside end prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, and Ohio State, among others.  He was committed to OSU for a few days, but that ended quickly.  In 247's Composite ranking, he's the #13 weakside end and the #198 player overall.

Malik McDowell - DE - Detroit (MI) Loyola: McDowell is a 6'7", 290 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, and a host of others.  He is a 5-star or high 4-star caliber prospect.  Michigan and Notre Dame seemed to be neck and neck, but recent info suggests Michigan might be taking a lead.

Sam Mustipher - OG - Olney (MD) Good Counsel: Mustipher is a 6'4", 285 lb. offensive guard prospect with offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Maryland, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and West Virginia, among many others; his father played football for the Mountaineers.  Good Counsel is the alma mater of Michigan cornerback Blake Countess, as well as the home of several other Michigan targets in recent years, including Stefon Diggs (Maryland), Wes Brown (Maryland), Dorian O'Daniel (Clemson), and Kendall Fuller (Virginia Tech).  The 247 Composite ranking places him as the #8 offensive guard and #119 player overall.

Brady Pallante - DT - Naples (FL) Barron Collier: Pallante is a 6'1", 270 lb. prospect with a scholarship offer from Appalachian State and a greyshirt offer from Michigan.  He was very close to committing to Michigan's greyshirt offer when it happened several weeks ago, but he has decided to wait out the process - at least for a little while - to see what other opportunities arise.

Jabrill Peppers - CB - Paramus (NJ) Catholic: Peppers is a 6'1", 200 lb. prospect with a top group of schools that includes Alabama, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Stanford.  The 247 Composite rankings put him at the #1 athlete prospect (he could also play running back, wide receiver, or safety) and the #5 overall player in the nation. Peppers is the teammate of Bushell-Beatty, mentioned above.

Blaise Stearns - WR - Ann Arbor (MI) Gabriel Richard: Stearns is a 6'2", 202 lb. receiver from the class of 2013.  He will be a student at Michigan in the fall, so it looks like he might be a walk-on in the future.  As a senior in 2012, he had 25 receptions for 540 yards and 7 touchdowns.  He also had 3 rushing touchdowns, 4 interceptions, and 1 defensive touchdown.  I don't often say this about walk-ons, but based on his film, I think Stearns would have a chance of contributing to the team as a slot receiver or on special teams down the road.

Jared Wangler - LB - Warren (MI) De La Salle: Wangler is a 6'2", 215 lb. linebacker prospect with offers from Bowling Green, Ohio, Toledo, and Western Michigan.  As a junior in 2012, he had 76 tackles, 15 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and 1 interception, which was returned for a touchdown.  Wangler is the son of former Michigan quarterback John Wangler and the brother of wide receiver Jack Wangler, who will enroll at Michigan in the fall and walk on to the football team.

Maurice Ways - WR - Detroit (MI) Country Day: Ways is a 6'3", 195 lb. wideout with offers from Iowa, Kansas, and some MAC schools.  He's a 3-star, the #76 wide receiver, and the #591 overall player in 247's Composite rankings.  As a junior in 2012, he had 51 receptions for 957 yards and 9 touchdowns.  Ways also visited Michigan last week.  He has supposedly struggled with drops at times, but athletically, I like Ways and think he might be headed for some big offers down the road.

K.J. Williams - WR - Bethlehem (PA) Liberty: Williams is a 6'2", 190 lb. prospect with offers from Arizona, Michigan, Pitt, Rutgers, South Carolina, and UCLA, among others.  As a junior in 2012, he had 59 catches for 986 yards and 11 touchdowns.  He also plays safety on defense, but Michigan appears to want him as a wideout.  His 247 Composite ranking places him as a 4-star, the #15 athlete, and the #184 overall player.

Brady Pallante, Wolverine

Naples (FL) Barron Collier defensive tackle Brady Pallante
Naples (FL) Barron Collier defensive tackle Brady Pallante committed to Michigan on Friday.  He chose the grayshirt offer from the Wolverines over a full scholarship from Appalachian State.

Pallante is a 6'1", 270 lb. prospect who claims a 370 lb. bench, a 580 lb. squat, and a 5.0 forty yard dash.  He is unrated on all four of the major recruiting sites.

Pallante was offered his grayshirt back in February, and he almost committed at the time.  However, he decided to hold off to avoid making a rash decision.  In the meantime, Appalachian State offered him a full ride.  Pallante decided to visit Michigan this week, and it seemed likely that he would take the opportunity to accept the offer.  A grayshirt means that he will start attending Michigan in Fall 2014 on his own dime, but when a scholarship opens up after the season, he will then join the team and begin going to school on scholarship; his true freshman season will be 2015, at which point he will have five years to play four.  Hypothetically, he could redshirt in 2015 and then play the 2016-2019 seasons.  Class of 2012 safety Jeremy Clark also accepted a grayshirt opportunity at one time, but when a scholarship opened up due to attrition, Michigan's coaches gave him a full ride upon enrollment.  That could very well happen with Pallante, too.

The young defensive tackle has a fair amount of potential, in my opinion.  He's a true nose tackle in a 4-3 Under defense, because he plays with great leverage as a short, stout fire hydrant.  He uses his hands well to control offensive linemen, he looks tremendously strong in the upper and lower body, and he's comfortable in either a right- or left-handed stance.  His first step is decently quick, and he does a good job of grabbing at ankles coming through the line, tripping up ball carriers before they can get a full head of steam.

Pallante will never be massive, since he's only listed at 6'1"; often players are even shorter, so he might only be about 6'0" tall.  He will probably top out at around 300-310 lbs.  His speed leaves a little bit to be desired; he won't be able to chase players from sideline to sideline, and he won't be much of a pass rusher.

Overall, I think Pallante can be a solid contributor, although perhaps not a stud at Michigan.  He won't put up big numbers like Mike Martin did, but there are some similarities there in size and technique.  Defensive coordinator Greg Mattison had a similar player with the Baltimore Ravens in the form of Kelly Gregg; Gregg has put up 80 tackles in a couple seasons and has had up to 3.5 sacks, mostly by playing with great leverage, showing consistent effort, and creating a pile in the middle of the line.

TTB Rating: 70 (ratings explanation)

Here are Pallante's junior highlights.

Recruiting Update: February 25, 2013

Naples (FL) Barron Collier defensive tackle Brady Pallante (right, making the tackle)
ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Paramus (NJ) Catholic offensive tackle Juwann Bushell-Beatty was offered by Michigan.  He's a 6'6", 310 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, Florida State, and West Virginia, among others.  He's the #25 offensive tackle to 247 Sports.  His teammate is big-time cornerback prospect Jabrill Peppers, who also holds a Michigan offer.

River Ridge (LA) John Curtis wide receiver Malachi Dupre was offered by Michigan.  Dupre is a 6'2", 190 lb. wideout with offers from Clemson, Florida State, LSU, Nebraska, Oklahoma State, and UCLA, among others.  He claims a 4.55 forty and is the #59 overall player to 247 Sports.  As a junior in 2012, he had 36 catches for 816 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Greensboro (NC) Page defensive end Lorenzo Featherston was offered by Michigan.  Featherston is a 6'7", 220 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Florida State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, and Tennessee, among others.  As a junior in 2012, he had 58 tackles, 15 tackles for loss, and 2 sacks.  He's the #21 overall player to 247 Sports and #108 to Rivals.

Naples (FL) Barron Collier defensive tackle Brady Pallante was offered a grayshirt scholarship by Michigan.  Pallante is a 6'1", 275 lb. prospect with no other offers at this time.  A grayshirt is a scholarship in which the player pays his own way through school for a semester before getting a scholarship once some current players graduate.  For example, as a part of the 2014 class, Pallante would pay his own way through school and not join the football team until January 2015, at which time he would join Michigan's football team for spring practices and be on scholarship (potentially) from the 2015-2019 seasons.  Despite the lack of a great recruiting profile, Pallante is a solid nose tackle prospect.  What he lacks in size and athleticism, he makes up for in strength and technique.

New Orleans (LA) St. Augustine cornerback Jermaine Roberts was offered by Michigan.  He's a 5'11", 175 lb. prospect with offers from Florida State, LSU, Texas, Texas A&M, and UCLA, among others.  As a junior in 2012, he had 47 tackles, 9 interceptions, 13 pass breakups, 1 fumble recovery touchdown, and 2 interceptions returned for touchdowns.  Roberts has good speed and change of direction, and he also shows an ability to play physically.  His teammate is fellow Michigan offeree Leonard Fournette, one of the top running backs in the country for 2014.

Westlake (LA) Westlake tight end Jacory Washington was offered by Michigan.  Washington is a 6'5", 210 lb. prospect who is committed to LSU, and he also has offers from Auburn, Alabama, Texas A&M, and UCLA, among others.  As a junior in 2012, he had 35 catches for 476 yards and 7 touchdowns.  Washington is keeping an open mind despite being committed to the Tigers.

Bethlehem (PA) Liberty wide receiver K.J. Williams was offered by Michigan.  Williams is a 6'2", 190 lb. wideout with offers from UConn, Pitt, Rutgers, and South Carolina, among others.  As a junior in 2012, he had 59 receptions for 986 yards and 11 touchdowns.  He's a big, physical kid with good speed who could also play safety at the next level.

River Ridge (LA) John Curtis linebacker Kenny Young was offered by Michigan.  Young is a 6'2", 215 lb. prospect with offers from Florida, LSU, Texas A&M, and numerous others.  He's a 4-star prospect to both Rivals and 247 Sports.  John Curtis is the alma mater of former USC star Joe McKnight and former Michigan target Robby Green (Alabama).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Manlius (NY) Fayetteville-Manlius tight end Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. was offered by Michigan.  Wheatley is a 6'6", 235 lb. rising junior who is the son of former Michigan (and New York Giants and Oakland Raiders) running back Tyrone Wheatley.  This is the younger Wheatley's first offer.  His father is the running backs coach for the Buffalo Bills.

MISCELLANEOUS
Here's a list of Michigan's weekend visitors.
