Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Tom Brady

Tom Brady
Tom Brady had a 30-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday night, completing 20/31 passes for 316 yards and 2 touchdowns. His New England Patriots are 4-0.

Honorable mention: Jay Feely hit the game-winning field goal for the Arizona Cardinals in a 13-10 win. LaMarr Woodley had 3 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 forced fumble but his Pittsburgh Steelers lost a 34-27 game to the Minnesota Vikings. Oakland Raider Charles Woodson had 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack, and 1 quarterback hurry in a 24-14 losing effort against the Washington Redskins.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Ryan Mundy

Ryan Mundy
New York Giants free safety Ryan Mundy had 6 tackles, 1 pass breakup, and 1 interception that he returned 91 yards for a near touchdown. Unfortunately, the Giants lost by a score of 36-31 to the Dallas Cowboys. Mundy had 86 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, 1 sack, 3 interceptions, and 1 pass breakup at Michigan from from 2003-2006 before transferring to West Virginia for his senior year in 2007.

Honorable mention: Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley had 4 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 sack, and 1 quarterback hurry in a 16-9 loss to the Tennessee Titans; teammate Zoltan Mesko, previously released by the New England Patriots, averaged 44.1 yards on 7 punts in the loss. Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Leon Hall had 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 2 pass breakups in a 24-21 loss to the Chicago Bears. And in case you were wondering, Jacksonville Jaguars running back Denard Robinson had 2 carries for 1 yard in a 28-2 loss to Kansas City (which featured Junior Hemingway on a 3-yard touchdown reception).

Former Michigan Athletes: Free Agency Update

Larry Foote re-signed with the Steelers
Jake Long visited St. Louis, took a physical, and entered into contract negations with the Rams, but he left without inking a deal.  Long was reportedly asking for more than $10 million per year, which now appears unlikely to happen.  The five year veteran and four time Pro Bowler is expected to either sign with the Rams or stay in Miami.

The New York Giants ponied up over $2 million to put restricted free agent Stevie Brown on a one year, second-round tender.  That means that the Giants would receive the second-round draft pick from any team that outbids them for Brown's services.  Still, the Giants continue looking for more help at safety and might even strike a deal with Ryan Mundy during his scheduled visit.

Larry Foote re-signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers after flirting with the Arizona Cardinals.  The three-year deal comes on the heels of a season that saw him rack up 113 tackles, four sacks, and two forced fumbles.  Teammate LaMarr Woodley restructured his contract the same day to free up over $4 million in cap space.

49er safety free agent Dashon Goldson landed a big deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and that left the door open for Charles Woodson.  The '97 Heisman winner returned to the Bay Area--where he spent the first eight years of his career as an Oakland Raider--in order to meet with the 49ers. Woodson has expressed a strong desire to play for a Super Bowl contender during his 16th NFL season, and might be available at a discount to the right team.

Steve Breaston's sudden drop in production last year can probably be chalked up to knee inflammation and early arthritic symptoms.  Breaston contemplated a knee procedure, but has decided to forgo the surgery as he tests his value on the free agent market.  Breaston visited the Steelers and Browns this week, but walked away without signing a contract.  While waiting for a new deal, Breaston is staying busy by passing out free iPads to kids at his former high school.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Brandon Graham

Is that you, Magnus?
Pickings were slim this week, so I went with Brandon Graham despite his team's 28-13 loss to the New Orleans Saints.  Graham had an impressive play early in the third quarter on Monday Night Football when he came hard off the edge, stripped Drew Brees and recovered the fumble.  The ensuing drive lead to an Eagles touchdown and temporarily gave them a sliver of hope.  Graham finished the game with two tackles.  He now has 14 tackles, 1.5 sacks, 1 fumble forced and one fumble recovery on the year.

Honorable Mention:  LaMarr Woodley puts the look of terror into the eyes of opposing quarterbacks.  Don't believe me?  I present to you Exhibit A:
Exhibit A
Woodley sacked Eli Manning late in the forth quarter on third down.  The sack forced a Manning fumble, and although it was recovered by the Giants, the play lead to a punt and helped Woodley's Steelers pull out a close win.  (No, there is no Exhibit B.)

Miscellaneous:
  • Stevie Brown disappointed his team, family and Michigan alumni by playing in a game this year in which he failed to pick off a pass and return it half the length of the football field.  But he did make eight tackles, including one for a loss.
  • Steve Breaston broke out of his funk and caught a couple balls for seventeen yards.
  • Leon Hall had five tackles and continues to be a starting CB for the Bengals despite a lingering leg injury.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Mario Manningham

It's been a rough year for Mario Manningham, especially when considering his lofty preseason expectations. Manningham appeared in only 12 games and battled through a concussion and a lingering knee injury while putting up his worst statistical performance since his 2008 rookie season. But that now seems like the distant past after the Giants' 24-2 NFC Wild Card game victory over the Atlanta Falcons. Manningham caught four passes for 68 yards in the contest, including a game-clinching touchdown grab midway through the fourth quarter. Super Mario looked impressive on the play (watch it here), beating two defensive backs for the 27 yard catch up the middle.

"The fact that Mario made plays was big," said coach Tom Coughlin. That was something that we needed to have happen and I am certainly glad it did. When you look at tape of some of these games and you look at previous games of the teams that we are playing, you see [number] 82 making catches and running behind guys, and that's a good thing"

Honorable Mention: Steelers' starting free safety Ryan Clark nearly died due to a blood condition the last time he played at Mile High Stadium, so being an upstanding guy, Ryan Mundy kindly stepped into his role. Mundy played 60 minutes of good football, recording five tackles and forcing two fumbles, one of which was recovered by LaMarr Woodley. But unfortunately for Mundy, the game lasted 60 minutes and 11 seconds, and he was caught out of position on the first play of overtime, resulting in an 80-yard touchdown and the quickest end to overtime in NFL history. To be fair, it seemed as if the defensive game plan called for Mundy to stay close to the line of scrimmage, essentially daring Tebow to throw the ball, and Tebow surprisingly rose to the challenge. But still . . .

Miscellaneous: Donovan Warren joins former teammate, Perry Dorrestein, and tight ends coach Mike DeBord in Chicago with the Bears. Travelin' man Martell Webb signed with the Arizona Cardinals. Adrian Arrington caught his third pass of the season in the Saints' victory over...well, you know.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Tom Brady

Sexy. And Gisele Bundchen ain't too bad, either.
Tom Brady threw for 338 yards and three touchdowns on Sunday in the Patriots' 49-21 victory over the Buffalo Bills to secure home field advantage throughout the AFC playoffs. Brady finished the regular season with 5,235 passing yards, good for second most in NFL history behind Drew Brees' 2011 total of 5,486. After a first-round bye, Brady and the Patriots will face the winner of the Texans-Bengals game; his chances of getting another Super Bowl ring currently stand at 4/1 according to Vegas.

Honorable Mention: Jay Feely hit another game winning field goal as the Cardinals defeated the Seahawks, 23-20, in overtime. Feely had a rough start to the season, going 6-for-11 on field goal attempts before getting on track and finishing 19-for-24 (79.2%).

Miscellaneous: Ryan Mundy will step in as the starting free safety and LaMarr Woodly will likely return to the starting lineup when the Steelers visit Denver during Sunday's wild-card game. Jake Long and Steve Hutchinson were placed on the Injured Reserve. New Jaguar Morgan Trent picked off a pass for the second straight week.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Charles Woodson

A commenter on the Packers’ official website thinks that “Charles Woodson is a stud.” I tend to agree. During Sunday’s contest between the Packers and the Vikings, the 35-year-old Woodson intercepted two passes in the third quarter, which resulted in two Green Bay field goals. Those six points ended up being the difference in the game as the Packers downed the Vikings by a score of 33-27 to remain the undefeated leaders of the NFC North. Woodson also had four tackles and 3 pass defenses in the Victory.

The Packers played “99% man coverage” against rookie QB Christian Ponder, but Woodson was still able to use his understanding of the game to undercut passes. “You have your back to the ball a lot, your back to the quarterback a lot, and you just try to put yourself in position and get your head around when you think the ball is coming and make a play on it…I really feel like I should have had four today,” said Woodson. The only two active players who have more picks than Woodson (52) are Darren Sharper (63) and Ed Reed (56).

Perhaps most impressive, Woodson taught children all across America the valuable lesson that no one is perfect when he gave up a 24 yard touchdown pass to WR Jenkins mid-way through the fourth quarter. Wow, he plays football like a badass and cares about Children, too.

Honorable Mention: LaMarr Woodley recorded seven tackles, 2 TFLs and 2 sacks—one of which led to a safety—as his team the Pittsburgh Steelers won a 32-20 contest over Arizona.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Steve Breaston

Fifteen days ago, I selected Steve Breaston as the week 3 Former Michigan Athlete of the Week; however, I also made it clear that he was chosen mostly by default, saying "I hope Breaston's numbers are a bit more impressive the next time he wins...."

Two weeks later, it is exceedingly apparent that Breaston reads this blog and is highly motivated by my powerful words. Breaston caught two touchdown passes on Sunday, one of which was an 11 yard grab that gave his team a four point lead with only 5:15 remaining in the game. The Chiefs held on for the 28-24 victory, and Breaston finished with four catches for 50 yards as well as the aforementioned 2 touchdowns. He is also playing a "bigger part in [the] Chiefs' offense," which should earn him a reprieve from Coach Haley's constant screaming and terrible temper. Breaston has played both in the slot and on the outside at his wide receiver position this year.

Honorable Mention: LaMarr Woodley terrorized the Tennessee Titans to the tune of 2 sacks, 3 tackles, an interception and a deflected pass as his team the Pittsburgh Steelers went on to win by a score of 38-17. The interception was the fourth of LaMarr's career, which is alright for a 265 lb. 26 year-old outside linebacker.

Also worth mentioning, Philadelphia Eagle Jason Avant snared 9 catches for 139 yards but with 0 touchdowns in a 31-24 loss to the Bills.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Year: Tom Brady

Tom Brady had a great season in 2010

New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady had a superb season in 2010, and I think he's reached a point where the media kind of ignore his statistical awesomeness.  Brady finished the season 324-for-492 (65.9%) with 3,900 yards, 36 touchdowns, and only 4 interceptions.  His quarterback rating of 111.0 is the fifth-highest rating of all time, behind the likes of Peyton Manning, Steve Young, Joe Montana . . . and the 2007 version of himself.  It was so good, in fact, that he's the first player to win the NFL MVP by a unanimous vote.

Runner-up: Charles Woodson, the Green Bay Packers cornerback, finished the regular season with 92 tackles, 5 forced fumbles, 2 interceptions (1 returned for a touchdown), 13 passes broken up, and 2 sacks.  And his Packers just beat the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl, 31-25.

Second runner-up: Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley ended his regular season with 50 tackles, 10 sacks, 2 interceptions (1 returned for a touchdown), 5 passes broken up, 3 fumbles forced, and 2 fumbles recovered.  His Steelers lost to the Packers in the Super Bowl, 25-31.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: LaMarr Woodley

LaMarr Woodley

Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley is headed to the Super Bowl.  He helped oust the New York Jets by a score of 24-19.  Woodley had 4 tackles, 1 sack, 2 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hurries, and 1 pass breakup.

Honorable mention: Green Bay Packer Charles Woodson had 3 tackles as the Packers beat the Chicago Bears, 21-14.

The Steelers also have backup linebacker Larry Foote and backup safety Ryan Mundy, both of whom are Michigan products.

Monday, December 13, 2010

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Jay Feely

Arizona Cardinals kicker Jay Feely had a fantastic day for a kicker on Sunday.  As you can see above, Feely was a juggernaut.  He was 5-for-6 on field goals, including a 55-yarder.  He also scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run and made all 4 of his extra points.  In the 43-13 victory over the Broncos, Feely had 25 points.

But there were a lot of guys deserving of honorable mention . . .

a. Tom Brady, of the New England Patriots, helped beat the Chicago Bears, 36-7.  Brady was 27/40 for 369 yards and 2 touchdowns in the snow.

b. Dhani Jones, a Cincinnati Bengals linebacker, had 8 tackles, 1 sack, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 quarterback hurry in a 23-7 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers.

c. LaMarr Woodley, who helped his Steelers beat Jones's Bengals, had 5 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss, 2 quarterback hurries, 1 interception, and 1 pass breakup.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Tom Brady

I know it seems like I choose Tom Brady a lot . . . but what can I say?  He's awesome.  Brady completed 21/29 passes on Monday night against the Jets for a total of 326 yards, 4 touchdowns, and 0 interceptions.  And his Patriots team beat the New York Jets, 45-3.

Honorable mention: Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley had 2 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, 1 quarterback hurry, and 1 big fumble recovery in a 13-10 divisional victory over the Baltimore Ravens.

Honorable mention: New York Jets wide receiver Braylon Edwards had 3 catches for 78 yards, including a 74-yarder for a touchdown, against the Detroit Lions.  The Jets won in overtime by a score of 23-20.

Former Michigan Athlete of the Week: Lamarr Woodley

Lamarr Woodley

Honorable mention: New York Giants wide receiver Mario Manningham caught 4 passes for 75 yards, including a 54-yard touchdown catch.  However, the Giants lost to the Indianapolis Colts, 38-14.
