NFL Wolverines: 2013 Statistics

Despite the football program's recent and not-so-recent struggles, Michigan continues to be well-represented in the NFL.  Here's a list by position group:

Quarterback

Tom Brady recorded an 87.3 quarterback rating, his lowest since 2003.  Still, 4,343 yards and 25 touchdowns isn't too shabby.

Chad Henne continued to show that he can be a valuable and reliable backup in the NFL.  The only problem is that Henne played a starting roll for the Jacksonville Jaguars, which resulted in a 4-13 record.  After the season, the Jags still locked up him for another two years.  Henne finished the season with a 76.5 quarterback rating, 3,241 yards passing, 13 touchdowns, and 14 interceptions.

Ryan Mallett didn't see game action backing up Tom Brady.

Running Back

Denard Robinson carried the ball 20 times for a total of 66 yards.  Although that only amounted to a 3.3 yard average, he did have an impressive 24-yard run against the Buffalo Bills.  Unfortunately, Robinson fumbled at the end of the play--one of his three fumbles on the season--and the ball was recovered by Buffalo in the endzone for a safety.

Michael Cox  recorded 43 yards on 22 rushing attempts in his rookie year for the New York Giants.  He also operated as an on-again, off-again kick returner, registering a 56-yard return against the Detroit Lions late in the season.

Wide Receiver

Jason Avant is a "wonderful catcher of balls . . . and such a good receiver for all the Eagles, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah," or so the song goes.  He finished the season with 38 receptions for 447 yards and two touchdowns.  Avant signed a one-year contract with the Carolina Panthers at year's end. 

Junior Hemingway played in every game, and totaled 13 catches for 125 yards and two touchdowns.  He also recorded eight tackles, presumably on special teams.

Mario Manningham played in six games but did not accrue any statistics during his injury-plagued season for San Francisco.  He later signed a one-year deal with his former team, the New York Giants.

Offensive Line

Jonathan Goodwin graded out as the second best center in the league, according to Pro Football Focus, and played in all 16 games for the 49ers.  Despite that, he has yet to be re-signed by his team and is currently a free agent.

Jake Long started and played in 15 games for his new team the St. Louis Rams.  He spent the previous five seasons with the Miami Dolphins.

Steve Schilling played in seven games as a San Diego Charger before signing with the Super Bowl Champion Seattle Seahawks.

David Baas played in three games for the New York Giants.  He is now a free agent. 

William Campbell suited up for the New York Jets but did not see game action.

Patrick Omameh did not see game action with his team the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. 

David Molk was not in the league during the 2013 season after being cut by the Chargers; however, he recently signed with Chip Kelly and the Eagles and is listed on the team roster.

I like Charles Woodson's  profile better, but apparently the NFL doesn't like free promotion and disallows embedding.  Brady and Woodson are the only two former Wolverines on this year's list.  Last year, they checked in at #4 and #36, respectively, and were also joined by Jake Long (#59) and LaMarr Woodley (#63).

Congratulations to wide receiver Junior Hemingway, who was drafted in the seventh round (#238 overall) by the Kansas City Chiefs this evening.  Hemingway joins fellow Wolverine Steve Breaston, and may also find some time to spend with his good friend James Rogers, who lives in the area and plays for the arena league team the KC Command.

David Molk, San Diego Charger

Congratulations to center David Molk, who was drafted in the seventh round (#226 overall) by the San Diego Chargers today.  Molk joins fellow Wolverines Stephen Schilling and Jonas Mouton, who were selected by the Chargers in last year's NFL Draft.

Mike Martin, Tennessee Titan

Congratulations to defensive tackle Mike Martin, who was drafted in the third round (#82 overall) by the Tennessee Titans last night.

Michigan Representation in the NFL

A couple weeks ago, I undertook the tedious task of examining Michigan's Combine participation and Draft position since 1999. Fortunately, there was a bit more information readily available when I decided to review Michigan's rank among schools that have produced the most NFL talent. For a historical perspective, Pittsburgh Steeler blog Behind the Steel Curtain ranked the top 25 producers of NFL players all-time, which included this top five:

1. Notre Dame

2. USC

3. Ohio State

4. Michigan

5. Penn State

That post was published nearly 11 months ago - which is as good as yesterday when looking at NFL history. But when looking at schools' representation of active players, the fluid nature of NFL rosters causes the Behind the Steel Curtain article and their placement of Michigan at #6 to already be outdated. According to ESPN, Michigan currently has only 27 active NFL players, placing them outside of the top ten, behind schools like California and Maryland and far behind the most well-represented schools, such as USC (49) and Ohio State (44). And as you saw in the article linked above, Michigan's participation in the Combine and selection in the Draft has been on the decline in recent years, too.

So if you're looking for yet another (and less publicized) reason to be pleased with Brady Hoke, here you go. Given the type of offense being implemented, players being recruited, and general direction of the program, it appears that Michigan will soon be back to their old ways of regularly churning out NFL talent. That leads to an advantage in recruiting and is undoubtedly an asset to the program. But most of all, it's just awesome.

NFL Wolverines: Manningham, Hutchinson, Henne Find New Teams

NFL free agency kicked off at 4:00 p.m. on March 13 and that lead to some shuffling of former Michigan athletes. We'll find out where all of them land when I get around to updating the list of Wolverines in the NFL, but for now, here's the rundown of the high-profile movers.

Mario Manningham is headed to San Francisco after signing a two-year contract worth up to 7.3 million dollars - a good chunk of coin but significantly less than top-flight wide receiver money. Manningham fought a knee injury for much of last year and had the least productive regular season of his career, finishing with 39 catches for 523 yards. However, his playoff performances and Super Bowl heroics contributed to a healthy market for his services, which the Giants could not afford with two solid wide receivers, Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks, already on their roster. Manningham joins a 49ers receiving unit that includes former Buckeye and first-round draft pick Ted Ginn Jr., former first-rounder Michael Crabtree, and all-time receiving great Randy "straight cash, homie" Moss.

Steve Hutchinson isn't the dominant All-Pro left guard that he used to be, but the 34-year-old is still good enough to command a three-year contract from the Tennessee Titans. Hutchinson - who has pancake blocked the way to 1,000 yard rushing seasons for Adrian Peterson, Shaun Alexander and Chester Taylor - will now be paving the way for speedster Chris Johnson, one of the league's most exciting running backs.

Chad Henne separated his non-throwing shoulder in early October of last year, which caused him to miss the remainder of the 2011 season. Actually, the injury was "more severe than a separated shoulder," according to Henne. But he still drew attention when he hit the open market, first from the Seattle Seahawks and then from the Jacksonville Jaguars, where he signed a two-year deal worth $6.75 million. Henne will compete with the 2011 NFL Draft's 10th overall selection Blaine Gabbert for Jacksonville's starting spot. Through four years in the NFL, Henne has more interceptions (37) than touchdowns (31) and an unimpressive 75.7 passer rating, but it doesn't sound like he's ready to concede anything yet. "I'm a fierce competitor. I will do everything I can to get that job."
