On Michael Weber

As most diehard Michigan fans know by now, Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber signed his National Letter of Intent to Ohio State on Wednesday after an intense battle between the Buckeyes and Wolverines. Of course, his position coach and lead recruiter, Stan Drayton, publicly accepted the running backs coach job for the Chicago Bears the very next day. This has prompted a bit of an uproar in recruiting circles and from Cass Tech head coach Thomas Wilcher, a former Wolverine himself who went on the radio to vent about Urban Meyer's disrespect toward Weber and Cass Tech.

The key point is that Weber was on the verge of choosing the Wolverines, and his relationship with Drayton was one of the things that sold him on Ohio State. The final nail in Michigan's coffin was that they had accepted a commitment from Florida running back Karan Higdon, which was announced at 8:00 a.m., approximately 2.5 hours before Weber himself announced. Weber thought he was going to be the only running back in Michigan's class. But if he had been made aware of Drayton's impending departure, he almost certainly would have chosen Michigan.

The practice of coaches leaving immediately after National Signing Day without informing recruits is sneaky and slimy and dirty. It's dishonest to recruit17- and 18-year-old kids - or even grownups - into a situation where the recruiter knows the dynamic will change 24 hours after the binding agreement is signed. Texas's defensive line coach did it, UCLA's defensive coordinator did it, and there have probably been more instances this season of which I'm unaware. Coaches spend as much time with these kids as anyone over the next four years and often make promises of helping them reach the next level. It's one thing to take a promotion after a year or two or three, because the flow of life is inevitable. It's quite another to voluntarily leave the next day.

Weber's choices now include accepting his fate and sticking with Ohio State, where head coach Urban Meyer - who almost assuredly knew of Drayton's future - obviously isn't a straight shooter. Weber could also transfer schools, which would force him to sit out the 2015 season, accept a redshirt, and have four seasons to play four seasons at his chosen destination. The third most prominent option would be to fight the National Letter of Intent's validity, legally proving that Ohio State knowingly misled him into his current situation. California defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes successfully pulled the third option a couple years ago, which got him away from Notre Dame and to UCLA, where he played as a true freshman in 2013.

For what it's worth, I have heard through the grapevine that Weber wants out of his Ohio State deal, which is understandable considering the distrust he probably has for Meyer. Michigan and Wisconsin are both potential landing spots, as both recruited him hard, and with new staffs in place, everyone is almost 100% secure for the next year, at least. A Detroit-area lawyer has offered his services pro bono to Weber, who has a good case but might not want the headache of going through the legal process. It would be a difficult choice for a high school kid whether to prolong the recruiting shenanigans (Weber got tired of recruiting and does not bask in the attention) or start on the path to four years with an ethically questionable coach.

From Michigan's end, Weber said on National Signing Day that he thought he was the only running back being recruited by the Wolverines. Perhaps there is some distrust there, or perhaps he simply thought Jim Harbaugh would wait for Weber's decision before accepting another running back. Either way, it is a bit naive to think that Michigan - which did not take a running back in 2014 - would risk going a second straight year without a running back signee. If Weber had been given or accepted good advice, he should have reserved his spot with Michigan before Higdon even had a chance to flip. Programs can't gamble like that if they want to find success consistently.

Michigan did something similar to Ohio State back in 2006 when offensive coordinator Terry Malone left for the New Orleans Saints a day after National Signing Day. Of the signees that year, Malone appears to have been the lead recruiter only for Obi Ezeh. While the situation is somewhat similar, Ezeh was a fullback/linebacker who ended up playing defense, and Michigan promoted special teams coach Mike Debord from within to take over offensive coordinator duties. Those facts are somewhat beside the point, but the negative repercussions seem pretty minimal.

As for Weber's future, Ohio State has junior Ezekiel Elliott, sophomore Curtis Samuel, and redshirt junior Warren Ball ahead of him; they also have the nation's #1 running back, Kareem Walker, committed in the 2016 class. They hired Nebraska offensive coordinator Tim Beck to replace Tom Herman, but Beck helped launch the careers of Ameer Abdullah and Rex Burkhead, so that's a positive if Weber ever earns the starting gig. Wisconsin's new head coach, Paul Chryst, is known for a power running game and has sophomore Corey Clement taking over the starting role; they also have a highly touted running back for 2016 in the form of Antonio Williams. Michigan has a top-heavy backfield scheduled for 2015, with three juniors and a redshirt sophomore vying for the starting gig but no 2016 commits in the fold. Regardless of where Weber ends up or when, there's going to be competition.

My guess is that Weber stays at Ohio State, where he would join rising sophomore cornerback Damon Webb and fellow 2015 signee Joshua Alabi, both of whom also went to Cass Tech. The allure of playing for the defending national champions and being "the next Ezekiel Elliott" is significant. The leading rumor right now for Drayton's replacement appears to be Notre Dame's Tony Alford.

If nothing else, this gives Weber an early introduction into the cold, cruel world of "business decisions."

National Signing Day Preview

Avon (CT) Old Farms tight end Chris Clark will decide early on Wednesday morning
At least three prospects who are strongly considering Michigan have nationally televised official announcements scheduled for National Signing Day, which is today, February 4th. All times are Eastern Standard Time. They include:
  • Chris Clark - TE - Avon (CT) Old Farms: Clark is announcing on ESPNU at 8:30 a.m. between Michigan and UCLA.
  • Roquan Smith - LB - Montezuma (GA) Macon: Smith is announcing at 11:00 a.m. between Georgia, Michigan, Texas A&M, and UCLA.
  • Iman Marshall - CB - Long Beach (CA) Poly: Marshall is announcing on ESPNU at 4:00 p.m. between Florida State, LSU, Michigan, Notre Dame, UCLA, and USC.
In less national announcements, here are the official announcement times of some other targets:

  • Mike Weber - RB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech at 10:00 a.m.
  • Van Jefferson - WR - Brentwood (TN) Ravenwood at 11:00 a.m.
  • Tyrone Wheatley, Jr. - TE - Buffalo (NY) Canisius at 3:15 p.m.
I have predictions for those guys - and numerous others - in another post I put up over the weekend, although I have updated it a couple times since then (LINK).

Otherwise, I put together a list of in-state players who could get a late call from Michigan in an effort to fill out the class (LINK). Wide receiver Grant Perry has already been the recipient of one of those offers and committed, although it's very late to count on many other guys getting phone calls from Harbaugh.

There will be no suspense about wide receiver Brian Cole and quarterback Alex Malzone, both of whom enrolled early and are already on campus.

Here's a look at what positions Michigan is trying to fill, along with the guys who might fill them (commits are highlighted in blue):
  • QB: Malzone, Zach Gentry
  • RB: Karan Higdon, Michael Weber
  • WR: Van Jefferson, Grant Perry
  • TE: Chris Clark, Tyrone Wheatley Jr.
  • OL: Grant Newsome, Jon Runyan Jr., Nolan Ulizio
  • DE: Shelton Johnson, Reuben Jones
  • DT: None
  • LB: Roquan Smith
  • CB: Jarius Adams, Iman Marshall, Keith Washington
  • S: Tyree Kinnel
  • K: Andrew David
Insiders at Scout (Sam Webb) and/or 247 Sports (Steve Wiltfong, Steve Lorenz) have expressed confidence in Michigan landing Karan Higdon, Michael Weber, Van Jefferson, Tyrone Wheatley Jr., and Keith Washington. Unfortunately, it looks like Chris Clark is choosing the sunshine and girls of Southern California (UCLA) over the tight end guru in Ann Arbor, and Iman Marshall is likely to do what everyone expected of him, which is sign with USC.

National Signing Day Predictions

Michael Weber
With National Signing Day coming up soon, here's a rundown of the uncommitted prospects (2015 Offer Board) on Michigan's board, plus a few who seem to be on the fence. I'll make a prediction here for each player, although I reserve the right to change it before NSD if new information comes out during/after official visits, etc.

Dexter Williams - RB - Florida: Notre Dame (+1)

Sotonye Jamabo - RB - Texas: UCLA (+1)

Michael Weber - RB - Michigan: Michigan Ohio State (-1)

2015 Recruiting Update: January 19, 2015

Official visitors (L to R): Andrew David, Roquan Smith, Shelton Johnson, Chris Clark, Damon Arnette, and Tyree Kinnel
Normally I'm happy to throw all notable recruiting developments into the mix in one post, but this week begs for two posts. So today you will see what's up with the 2015 class, which has a lot going on. Tomorrow (or maybe Wednesday) will have a wrap-up of all the rest of what's going on in recruiting.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Palm Beach Gardens (FL) Dwyer cornerback Jarius Adams was offered by Michigan. Adams, who committed to Rutgers last July, took an official visit to Florida Atlantic this past weekend, will head to Rutgers next weekend, and will conclude his officials with one to Ann Arbor on January 30. He's a 5'11", 180 lb. prospect who's a 247 Composite 3-star, the #128 cornerback, and #1418 overall. He won't blow you away with his speed or athleticism, but he appears to have good ball skills and is a very aggressive tackler. Adams could also be a safety at the next level, and that's where I see him fitting best.

Athens (OH) Athens quarterback Joe Burrow's Rivals profile started listing a Michigan offer a few days ago, and Scout's Sam Webb started implying that Michigan is pursuing a highly rated (Scout lists Burrow as a 4-star) quarterback who is committed to another Big Ten team. Burrow is a 6'4", 200 lb. prospect who committed to Ohio State in May 2014, and he is rumored not to have a strong affinity for new Ohio State offensive coordinator Tim Beck, who chose not to recruit him while at Nebraska. Overall, Burrow is a 247 Composite 3-star, the #12 dual-threat quarterback, and #379 overall. He was Ohio's Mr. Football this past season and Gatorade Player of the Year in the Buckeye State, and his stats are astounding. As a senior in 2014, he completed 72% of his passes for 4,445 yards, 63 touchdowns, and only 2 interceptions on 346 attempts; he also ran for 642 yards and 5 touchdowns. Burrow does not have a great arm and he's not the most athletic guy around, but he has a good combination from skills and can be a run-pass threat. While Michigan already has Alex Malzone as an early enrollee, Ohio State has three guys with starting experience returning for at least one year (unless one transfers, which does seem likely) and then the overall #74 player committed in the form of Torrance Gibson, a dual-threat quarterback who some have projected to change positions in college but who impressed analysts with his play at quarterback this year. Burrow might find himself buried in Columbus, while the quarterback competition in Ann Arbor is wide open. He has stated that he is solid to the Buckeyes.

Recruiting Update: January 6, 2015

Reisterstown (MD) Franklin offensive tackle Pat Allen
This is a huge recruiting update. I am a masochist.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Reisterstown (MD) Franklin offensive tackle Pat Allen decommitted from Georgia. He was supposedly leaning toward committing to Tennessee on Sunday night in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, but he ended up not announcing a decision at all. That is supposedly because he is re-considering the Bulldogs. Allen visited Michigan in the fall for an official visit, so a concerted effort by Harbaugh could get the Wolverines back in the mix.

Winter Garden (FL) West Orange running back Dexter Williams decommitted from Miami. A long-time Miami commit, he had been wavering for a while. In early December he said he was on track to graduate early and enroll at Miami in January, but that has fallen off. A reported score of 17 on his ACT might hamper his chances of qualifying at some schools, but he took an official to Louisville, has one set to Notre Dame, and is being pursued hard by Florida. Williams is a 6'0", 192 lb. prospect who's a 247 Composite 4-star, the #10 running back, and #83 overall.

OFF THE BOARD
Miami (FL) Booker T. Washington tight end Devonaire Clarington committed to Texas at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Clarington played defensive end his senior, but he is expected to be an offensive player for the Longhorns.

New Orleans (LA) Warren Easton wide receiver Tyron Johnson committed to LSU at the Under Armour All-American Game, which was exactly what everyone expected.

McKinney (TX) North running back Ronald Jones II committed to USC at the Under Armour All-American Bowl. He had previously been committed to Oklahoma State.

Bellflower (CA) St. John Bosco offensive guard Zach Robertson committed to Arizona State. Robertson was a high school teammate of quarterback Josh Rosen, who enrolled early at UCLA.

Manassas (VA) Stonewall Jackson defensive tackle Tim Settle committed to Virginia Tech during the Under Armour All-American Game. At one time Settle was presumed to be leaning toward Ohio State, and he was also friendly with 2014 defensive end Da'Shawn Hand (Alabama), who was thought to be a draw at one time (Settle also had an Alabama offer).

Missouri City (TX) Fort Bend Marshall cornerback Kendall Sheffield committed to Alabama at the Under Armour All-American Game.

Dallas (TX) Skyline linebacker Anthony Wheeler committed to Texas at the Under Armour All-American Game.

Hit the jump for a bunch of brief profiles on potential recruits to look at for 2015, plus some miscellaneous recruiting tidbits from the last week or two.

Recruiting Update: December 12, 2014

Chesapeake (VA) Oscar Smith defensive end Josh Sweat
OFF THE BOARD
Long Beach (CA) Poly cornerback Colin Samuel committed to UCLA. Samuel was offered late in the season as a reaction to Michigan's losses of Shaun Crawford (Notre Dame) and Garrett Taylor (Penn State) from the 2015 class. He is a teammate of 5-star cornerback Iman Marshall, who is expected to sign with USC.

Chesapeake (VA) Oscar Smith defensive end Josh Sweat committed to Florida State. Sweat is an extremely impressive athlete who unfortunately tore his ACL early in his senior season, but he's still the #1 overall player to 247 Sports and the #6 player in the 247 Composite rankings. Florida State has three Michigan-offered defensive ends in the 2015 and 2016 classes, including Sweat and 2016s Josh Brown and Janarius Robinson.

Lawrenceville (GA) Central Gwinnett linebacker Adonis Thomas committed to Alabama. Thomas had originally committed to Florida, but he decommitted in late October as their season spiraled downward.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Mike Weber committed to Ohio State. Weber had originally committed to Michigan, but he announced his decommitment during the Wolverines' loss to Maryland in late November.

MISCELLANEOUS
Rivals updated their rankings for 2015 (top 100, top 250) and 2016 (top 100, top 250) over the past couple weeks.

Over on Recruiting Season, I posted profiles for Orchard Lake St. Mary's OG Cameron Kolwich, Grand Rapids West Catholic TE Bryce Witham, and Warren De La Salle RB Allen Stritzinger. There are also several updated profiles with new offers and highlight videos.

Recruiting Update: November 25, 2014

Keisean Lucier-South is heading to UCLA
DECOMMITMENT
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber decommitted from Michigan (LINK).

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2015
Nacogdoches (TX) Nacogdoches cornerback Jaylon Lane decommitted from Oklahoma State. Lane is a 6'1", 177 lb. prospect with offers from Florida State, Georgia, Oklahoma, UCLA, and several others. He's a 247 Composite 4-star, the #22 cornerback, and #203 overall. Oklahoma State has lost five games in a row, and head coach Mike Gundy has been rumored as a front-runner for the Florida job (although it's tough to get fans excited about a coach who will probably lose his final six games of the year). Additionally, Lane was arrested for a felony and a couple misdemeanors. I do not expect Michigan to get involved.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2017
Plano (TX) East linebacker Anthony Hines III decommitted from Mississippi State. Hines is a 6'2", 218 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, LSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Tecas A&M, and UCLA, among others. He's a 247 Sports 4-star, the #6 outside linebacker, and #113 overall. Hines basically wants to check out other options without being tied down so early, and he also was turned off by head coach Dan Mullen yanking the scholarship of a committed 2015 quarterback last week. Again, Michigan is unlikely to have much of a shot here.

OFF THE BOARD
Orange (CA) Lutheran defensive end Keisean Lucier-South committed to UCLA. Lucier-South once called Michigan his dream offer, and there was some confidence among Michigan folk that they could land the 247 Composite 5-star, #2 weakside end, and #23 player overall. Unfortunately, Michigan's poor season combined with a solid one from UCLA was too much to overcome. He will probably play outside linebacker in the Bruins' 3-4 scheme, whereas he would be a defensive end in a 4-3 front.

MISCELLANEOUS
Here's a list of visitors who saw Michigan lose to Maryland (LINK).

Over on Recruiting Season, I updated the profiles of Farmington Hills Harrison DE Khalid Kareem, Brother Rice WR Grant Perry, and Auburn Hills Avondale RB Joshuwa Holloman, among others.

Michael Weber, Ex-Wolverine

Michael Weber
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber decommitted from Michigan on Saturday afternoon. Or at least he made it public, via his Twitter account. Weber is a 247 Composite 4-star, the #13 running back, and #113 overall in the 2015 class. As a senior this season, he ran for over 2,000 yards during Cass Tech's run to the state semifinals.

Weber had committed to the Wolverines back in August over offers from Michigan State, Ohio State, USC, and Wisconsin, among others. Almost immediately he mentioned that he still wanted to visit other schools, and I have been saying all along that I did not trust his commitment. Of course, Michigan fans shouldn't hold it against a kid when he sees the coach who recruited him sitting on the hottest of hot seats. It's practically a foregone conclusion that head coach Brady Hoke will be replaced sometime in the coming weeks, so it's understandable that he would want to explore his options.

Hit the jump for thoughts on the position going forward.

Recruiting Update: August 12, 2014

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber
COMMITMENT
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber committed to Michigan (LINK).

OFF THE BOARD
Princeton (NJ) Princeton running back Johnny Frasier committed to Florida State. Frasier had developed a solid relationship with area recruiter Roy Manning, but he was not expected to come to Michigan even before Weber's commitment.

Brooksville (FL) Nature Coast offensive tackle Christian Pellage committed to South Carolina. He never gave Michigan serious consideration.

Philadelphia (PA) St. Joseph's cornerback John Reid committed to Penn State. He's a teammate of Michigan offensive guard commit Jon Runyan, Jr. Michigan had been named to Reid's top group, but he never seemed particularly interested. Reid was a possible replacement of Shaun Crawford in the class, but the coaching staff will continue to look elsewhere, such as D.C.'s Marcus Lewis or North Carolinian Mook Reynolds.

Detroit (MI) King linebacker Tyriq Thompson committed to Michigan State. Thompson is the son of former Michigan safety Clarence Thompson, so this is a bit of a blow from a legacy perspective. However, I spent some time studying his game film and wrote up a scouting report in March (LINK), and I was not particularly high on Thompson's game.

Sumter (SC) Crestwood running back Ty'Son Williams committed to North Carolina. He committed to the Tarheels before Weber committed to the Wolverines, but now that Weber has pledged, Michigan will probably not recruit another running back in the class.

Michael Weber, Wolverine

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber committed to Michigan.
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber committed to Michigan on Wednesday night. He chose the Wolverines over offers from Michigan State, Ohio State, USC, and Wisconsin, among others.

I wrote up a scouting report on Weber in March (LINK), and not much has changed since then; after all, it was based on his junior film. He is slated to play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl in January.

RATINGS
ESPN: 4-star, 82 grade, #14 running back, #169 overall, #2 in-state
Rivals: 4-star, #10 running back, #105 overall, #1 in-state
Scout: 4-star, #13 running back, #104 overall
247 Sports: 4-star, 94 grade, #13 running back, #144 overall, #2 in-state

Weber was one of Michigan's earliest offers in the 2015 class, but Kentuckian Damien Harris committed first. The presence of perhaps the nation's top-ranked running back seemed to bother Weber, who lost some interest in Michigan and started to build relationships with the likes of Michigan State, Ohio State, USC, and Wisconsin. Then Al Borges was fired, Harris decommitted, and new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier re-prioritized Weber this winter and spring. As you can tell by my comments on the March scouting report, I thought Michigan held a slight lead by that point. Despite touted teammate Joshua Alabi committing to Ohio State recently, Weber skipped a planned visit to Michigan State, drove to Ann Arbor with one of his coaches, and committed to Michigan on Wednesday evening.

Weber is a solid player who has been dominating the Detroit area (and the state) for the past three years. I mentioned in that scouting report that he reminds me of Emmitt Smith in the way he runs - not extremely fast, not extremely powerful, not extremely shifty, but he gets the job done efficiently. One other thing to note is that Weber reportedly caught the ball well at a recent camp, which strengthens the Smith comparison and adds another dimension to a well rounded game. I have noted in the past that if Michigan's offensive line develops like it should with all these big-time recruits, any halfway decent running back should be very productive. I do not see Weber dominating the highlight reels in the future, but he should be a good running back for the Wolverines who has some potential for the NFL.

This gives Michigan ten commits in the 2015 class, which is currently scheduled to hit just 11 or so (LINK). He's also the only running back (with Harris likely headed elsewhere), and Michigan will probably stand pat with just one back in this class unless something changes. The Wolverines have landed the top two in-state players (Weber, WR Brian Cole) and three of the top four (QB Alex Malzone is #4), according to the 247 Composite. Weber is another in a long line of Cass Tech players headed to Michigan, where he will join offensive lineman David Dawson, linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone, cornerbacks Jourdan Lewis and Terry Richardson, and safety Delano Hill. Furthermore, his Wednesday night visit took place with Delano Hill's younger brother, Lavert, a 2016 cornerback who also holds an offer from the Wolverines.

Wayne (NJ) DePaul Catholic running back Kareem Walker (image via NorthJersey.com)
2015
Michael Weber - RB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: You are well acquainted with Weber, who has visited Michigan 1,071 times. He's currently the 247 Composite #14 running back and #115 player overall.

2016
Donnie Corley - WR - Detroit (MI) King: Corley is a 6'2", 180 lb. prospect with offers from Cincinnati, Illinois, Iowa, and a few MAC teams. He's a 247 Composite 4-star, the #44 wide receiver, #252 overall, and #8 in-state. Corley is transferring from Wyandotte (MI) Roosevelt for his junior season.

Lawrence Gordon - DE - Saginaw (MI) Arthur Hill: Gordon is a 6'6", 260 lb. prospect with no offers at this time. He's a 247 Composite 4-star, the #9 weakside end, #163 overall, and #3 in-state. He has visited Ann Arbor several times, and the Wolverines are the presumed leader.

Lavert Hill - CB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Hill is a 5'11", 165 lb. prospect with offers from Miami, Michigan, and Ohio State, among others. He's a 247 Composite 4-star, the #22 cornerback, and #228 overall. He's the younger brother of Michigan sophomore safety Delano Hill.

Leon Page - DE - Detroit (MI) King: Page is a 6'3", 212 lb. prospect with no offers at this time. As a sophomore in 2013, he had 28 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, and 6.5 sacks.

Kalebb Perry - WR - Mt. Pleasant (MI) Mt. Pleasant: Perry is a 6'2", 180 lb. prospect with offers from Central Michigan and Western Michigan. He's a 247 Composite 3-star, the #84 wide receiver, #504 overall, and #17 in-state. As a sophomore in 2013, he had 28 catches for 543 yards and 6 touchdowns. He camped at Michigan back in June but is still waiting for big-time offers.

Kareem Walker - RB - Wayne (NJ) De Paul Catholic: Walker is a 6'1", 210 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Pitt, Rutgers, and Wisconsin, among others. He's a 247 Composite 5-star, the #1 running back, and #6 overall. He also claims a 4.4 forty. Most importantly, his dreadlocks and running style make him look like Denard Robinson when he's running the ball.

Mikale Washington - QB - Detroit (MI) King: Washington is a 6'4", 180 lb. prospect with no offers at this time. He's a 247 Composite 3-star, the #24 pro-style quarterback, #428 overall, and #14 in-state. Washington transferred from southern California in the offseason, so this will be his first year of football in the Mitten.

2017
Johnathan Berghorst - DE - Zeeland (MI) East: Berghorst is a 6'2", 215 lb. prospect with no offers at this time. Despite the lack of offers, he's considered to be one of the top several in-state prospects for 2017.

Andre Jackson - CB - Bridgeport (MI) Bridgeport: I have been unable to find much information on Jackson other than his class and high school.

Bruce Mann - QB - Bay City (MI) Western: Mann is a 6'2", 180 lb. prospect with no offers at this time. Although it's early, he's considered to be perhaps the top quarterback in-state for his class. However, his father had been the coach at Western for the past five years and has now taken a power company job near Chicago. Mann is reportedly remaining in-state while his father commutes, but there's a good chance that the younger Bruce will eventually move closer to Chicago.

Will Rogers - DE - Saginaw (MI) Arthur Hill: Rogers is a 6'6", 235 lb. prospect with no offers at this time.

2019
Sam Johnson III - Detroit (MI): This is way early, but the recruiting sites reported it. In the Detroit youth league, Johnson completed 68/104 passes for 1,125 yards, 15 touchdowns, and 6 interceptions, plus he ran for 224 yards and 4 touchdowns on 31 carries.

Ty Isaac
TRANSFER
Ty Isaac - RB - Joliet (IL) Catholic:
Isaac, who is visiting on Tuesday, is a transfer prospect from USC. He was offered as part of the 2013 class and was a 247 Composite 4-star, the #8 all-purpose back, and #54 overall. As a true freshman, he carried the ball 40 times for 236 yards (5.9 yards/carry) and 2 touchdowns, but there are three Trojan running backs returning who were ahead of him on the depth chart last season. Furthermore, Isaac has an ill mother, so he wants to play closer to home. Northwestern and Northern Illinois are both within the 100-mile radius the NCAA has established for players hoping to get a waiver to play immediately; otherwise, he would have to sit out the 2014 season. Illinois, Michigan, and Notre Dame are the other three schools supposedly in competition, but he would have to sit out the 2014 season and wait until 2015 to be eligible. Michigan nabbed Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith in the 2013 class, but more competition would be welcome for a team that is still looking for someone to step up and grab the starting running back job by the horns. Here is my scouting report on Isaac from when he was in high school (LINK). He's now up to 6'3", 225 lbs. UPDATE: Isaac committed to Michigan (LINK).

2015

Grant Newsome - OT - Lawrenceville (NJ) Lawrenceville School: I wrote up a scouting report on Newsome back in March (LINK). He has since picked up an offer from Tennessee, but the general line of thinking is that he is currently trying to decide between Michigan and Penn State. This will be Newsome's second visit to Michigan.

Michael Weber - RB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Weber has been on Michigan's radar for a long time. The 247 Composite 4-star, #9 running back, and #90 overall player recently named a top five that included Michigan, but he also listed a top three inside the top five that did not include the Wolverines.

2016

Justin Layne - WR - Cleveland (OH) Benedictine: Layne is a 6'3", 173 lb. prospect with offers from Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Pitt, and West Virginia. He's a 247 Sports 4-star, the #18 wide receiver, and #88 overall. He claims a 4.44 forty time. Layne will be visiting Ann Arbor for a basketball camp, but he will also be visiting Michigan's football facilities with the coaches. The Wolverines are pursuing Layne's teammate, 2015 linebacker Jerome Baker, but Baker is thought to be leaning toward Ohio State.

Memphis (TN) Whitehaven linebacker Joshua McMillon (image via 247 Sports)
2015
Joshua McMillon - LB - Memphis (TN) Whitehaven: McMillon is a 6'3", 249 lb. prospect with offers from Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, and Tennessee, among many others. He's a 247 Composite 4-star, the #11 OLB, and the #182 player overall. Tennessee has done a good job of reeling in in-state prospects, and McMillon is the #6 player in the Volunteer State. Michigan is in the mix, but it's tough to pull talent out of SEC country.

Michael Weber - RB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: I wrote up a scouting report on Weber a few weeks ago. He has also recently visited Michigan State and Wisconsin.

2016
Mikale Washington - QB - Detroit (MI) King: Washington is a rising junior prospect who played his sophomore season at Dearborn (MI) Robichaud. He transferred to King this offseason and will be teammates with 2015 linebacker offeree Tyriq Thompson and Michigan State commit Kyonta' Stallworth. UPDATE: Washington visited Michigan for last weekend's spring game, but he will actually be visiting Michigan State this weekend.

Scouting Report: Michael Weber

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech running back Michael Weber (image via Detroit News)
Name: Michael Weber
Height: 5'10"
Weight: 205 lbs.
High school: Detroit (MI) Cass Tech
Position: Running back
Class: 2015

Notes: Holds offers from Illinois, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, North Carolina State, Ohio State, Purdue, Syracuse, Tennessee, and Wisconsin . . . ESPN 4-star RB, 80 grade, #20 RB, #227 overall . . . Rivals 4-star, #10 RB, #123 overall . . . 247 Sports 4-star, 96 grade, #7 RB, #73 overall . . . Claims 4.47 forty . . . Benches 305 lbs. . . . As a sophomore in 2012, had 1,700 yards and 21 touchdowns . . . As a junior in 2013, had 1,659 yards and 24 touchdowns . . . Has numerous former teammates playing college football, including Damon Webb (Ohio State), David Dawson (Michigan), Jourdan Lewis (Michigan), Delano Hill (Michigan), and Deon Drake (Michigan State)

Strengths: Good size/build for a running back . . . Not too big or too small . . . Shows an ability to get north and south without a lot of wasted time . . . Slashing style of runner . . . Doesn't take a lot of big hits . . . Good long speed . . . Accelerates quickly . . . Runs behind shoulder pads . . . Catches ball well out of the backfield . . Shows good patience in waiting for hole to develop . . . Drives feet after contact . . . Shows a physical attitude when blocking

Weaknesses: May struggle to create on his own . . . Does not have lightning speed . . . Could pick up knees higher through traffic . . . Tendency to carry ball in left hand when going right

Projection: Running back. Weber seems to do a lot of things well, and while he's not the fastest, shiftiest, or most powerful running back in the class, it's hard to find glaring weaknesses. Most of his "weaknesses" are either nitpicks or coachable. Cass Tech is a magnet school that consistently produces good linemen, so it's tough to judge Weber's vision when most of his highlights include his linemen blowing holes wide open. However, if his college team can open holes with any regularity, Weber hits the hole hard and will fall generally forward after contact.

Reminds me of: Emmitt Smith. Of course I'm not suggesting that Weber will one day be the NFL's all-time leading rusher, but the slashing style combined with Weber's gait and the way he waves his off hand while cutting just reminds me of the former Dallas Cowboy (and Arizona Cardinal). Additionally, Smith was never the speediest, most elusive, or strongest guy, but he found a way to churn out the yards.

Likelihood of committing to Michigan: Michigan State and perhaps Tennessee had lurched ahead of Michigan when Al Borges was the offensive coordinator and Damien Harris was committed to the Wolverines, but Harris's decommitment and the hiring of Doug Nussmeier have re-energized Michigan's pursuit of the Cass Tech product. There are some who believe that Michigan has a tentative lead over MSU, and I think his favorites in order would be Michigan, Michigan State, Tennessee, and then Wisconsin.

In-state Preview of 2015 Recruiting

Saginaw (MI) Heritage wide receiver/defensive back Brian Cole is generally considered to be the top prospect in the state
Now a yearly tradition (see my 2014 list), here's my preview of in-state recruiting for the class of 2015. I have done my best to track prospects over the past year or two, and this is a list of nearly 70 rising seniors who have the potential to play Division I football. That number has jumped from 23 in 2013 to 44 in 2014 to its current number. As you can imagine, this was a pretty exhausting exercise, so I hope you enjoying reading/scanning the list, watching some of these guys play, and perhaps seeing some people you know or some kids who go to your alma mater. The state may not have the "star power" of guys like Drake Harris, Malik McDowell, and Damon Webb from the 2014 class, but I think this is a deeper group of players than the past couple seasons.

One note: I started compiling offer lists and such in mid-January, so some new offers may have come rolling in over the past couple weeks that are not noted for guys in the first quarter of the alphabet. Enjoy!

Joshua Alabi - DT - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Alabi is a 6'5", 270 lb. prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Ohio State, Penn State, Tennessee, Vanderbilt, and Wisconsin. He's a 247 Composite 4-star, the #37 offensive tackle, #293 overall, and the #4 player in the state. For such a big-time prospect, there's not much film on Alabi from beyond his sophomore year. I have read that he wants to play defense, but some people around him are trying to convince him that he has a higher ceiling as an offensive lineman. Personally, I agree with those who think he fits better on offense. Cass Tech has generally been a Michigan pipeline, but Michigan State and Tennessee are the two front-runners.
