ReplyDeleteThat's pretty bad for Ben Hall, two games at just over 1ooyds. Bringing in Haynes was a no brainer
I was just thinking about this approximately 30 seconds before checking the comments, but I think it would behoove Michigan to continue investing in the RB position if/when possible. Maybe Michigan doesn't need it for 2026 with Jordan Marshall coming back and Savion Hiter coming in (I assume Haynes will enter the draft), but there's really no reason not to survey the college football landscape and try to pull in the most established RB they can find.
DeleteIf Michigan is truly committed to playing this style of football where everything is centered around the run, play action passes, etc., and if free agency is a thing every single year...just find the best 1-2 punch you can every off-season.
I imagine that it took a significant NIL investment to land a blue chip like Hiter. And it'll take one to keep Marshall given the season he is having.
DeleteAssuming Marshall stays I don't see Michigan shopping for another guy who costs big like Haynes but you never know. I would guess they shop the bargain bin for RB3 options behind Marshall/Hiter.
I doubt we'll land an elite guy like Haynes, but do hope we sniff around for someone who will challenge both Hatier and Parker ... iron sharpens iron & all
DeleteDo we NEED another RB? I think so. Marshall was injured most of last year, and has gotten up slow or limped in every conference game this year until sparty
with Haynes being out for the next month, it's even more justification for investing in our identity
Haynes is out for the next month?
DeleteI think from the team perspective it makes sense to want a strong RB3 in the event of an injury. But as we saw with Hall and Stokes (and Charbonnet) it's hard to convince a guy who is good enough to fill-in and play like a starter at Michigan to not just be RB1 or RB2 somewhere else.
If you're the GM and sitting on (lets just say) $500K in NIL money, I'd rather throw that at WR3 than RB3 cuz WR3 is going to see a whole lot more snaps.
That production for Ben Hall seems more in line with expectations. Seemed like a quality player while in AA. The transfer made sense for him since RB3 is typically not a big role even in the best of cases (see Mullings in '23 and Edwards in '21).
ReplyDeleteI am surprised that Michigan has gotten nothing from the portal RBs they added. Thought they would contribute at least in non-competitive situations. Kudzal and freshman it seems are ahead, which probably tells you something about the quality of replacement level guys at Michigan.
------------------
One thing I've wondered about as a "What If" -- how would Gentry, Persi, Giudice, Herring look if they all stuck around at Michigan. Would they be keeping guys like Guaranara, Link, and Sprague on the bench or be passed over by now? Doesn't matter I guess but it's interesting to see the player movement on OL, which I think will continue to accelerate given the big $ available to top guys. Like if you are Evan Link and see Babaloa, Frazier, and maybe Haywood coming at OT do you stay at UM and maybe move to OG to compete with Norton, Efobi, etc. or put yourself out there as a proven starter at OT at Michigan, likely earning many many hundreds of thousands on the Portal market. These are going to be tough choices for these young men to make at times. In Links particular case, he can probably finish out 4 years at Michigan in '26 and see how things sort out. He'll still have '27 to portal out if he wants.
---------------------------------------------
That's really interesting about McNamara's kid brother being the other QB. And they benched Cade for Jake in a competitve game? Or was he hurt? Looks like he was hurt. I gotta admit I'm not keeping up with East Tennessee Football State very closely LOL.
Either way Lil Mac transferred from UTEP it seems so it's interesting that the two brothers reunited at ETSU. Lil Mac was a 3-star nobody according to 247 but did get some limited snaps at UTEP. It seems he's a comparable player to his brother given he's several years younger and producing at a similar level.
Big Mac seems to be pretty injury prone. The lack of mobility maybe a factor there. We are lucky he made it through all of '21 unscathed. Probably having the best OL in the country helped there.
"I am surprised that Michigan has gotten nothing from the portal RBs they added"
Delete*except the best RB in the conference, if not nation. Almost certainly our OMVP
Yeah, in regard to transfer RBs, Haynes is one of the top few rushers in the nation. Hester transferred out and Volker was hurt at one point.
DeleteAs for the OL, I think those guys would be in a dogfight for playing time. Some of them already lost to a guy like Link in the fight for playing time, so if you're a fourth or fifth year guy losing to a young guy like Link, it makes sense to transfer to somewhere with maybe a more promising depth chart.
Cade got hurt at the end of the first quarter, which is why his brother stepped in. Also, Jake is the #3 guy, but the other guy got hurt, too.
Yes I meant Hester and Volker. Haynes, obviously is playing a starring role. Hester figured out he was going to face competition just to be RB3 here, so he dipped immediately. I thought Volker would get carries.
DeleteI agree with the OL take largely but with Hinton and Priebe leaving there were a couple spots opening up and people seem to think Link will move to guard at some point. I think those guys just didn't want to risk competing for a starting spot but they seem to be doing quite well where they landed.
