2015 Season Countdown: #53 Henry Poggi

Henry Poggi (#7) with Maurice Hurst, Jr. (image via Scout.com)
Name: Henry Poggi
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 273 lbs.
High school: Baltimore (MD) Gilman
Position: Tight end/defensive end
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number: #7
Last year: I ranked Poggi #63 and said he would be a backup strongside end. He played in six games and made 2 tackles.

Poggi had a reasonable excuse for not playing much last season, when he was behind senior Brennen Beyer and a very talented Taco Charlton. Both of those guys stayed healthy, and the season went about how one would expect for a third-string defensive end. Poggi did not play much; when he did, it was nothing spectacular. He did do solid work, though, and looked like a future contributor.

This year Poggi has added two pounds, but the coaching staff moved him to tight end in the spring, at least part-time. He practiced quite a bit on offense, though he is still listed on the official roster as a defensive end. This is a guy who was recruited by Alabama to be an H-back, so his offensive skills - particularly as a blocker - are not to be overlooked. He will not be a starter on either side of the ball. Defensively, junior Taco Charlton and redshirt junior Chris Wormley are the front-runners; offensively, Poggi has to battle Jake Butt, A.J. Williams, Tyrone Wheatley Jr., Khalid Hill, Chase Winovich, and Ian Bunting for playing time. Realistically, Poggi just has to bide his time until graduation sorts out the depth chart. The path seems clearer on defense, because Michigan is fairly thin at the end positions before you get to a couple undersized true freshmen.

Prediction: Backup defensive end

Spring Practice Rumblings

Mason Cole might not be blocking many edge rushers this season

---------------
Based on recent developments and leaks, I'll toss out some of the recent rumblings from practice, which you can feel free to dissect/discuss.

Quarterback: Different sources will say different things. I don't really have much to add to that, except it seems like Shane Morris is mentioned most often as looking the best.

Running back: Ty Isaac had questions about his toughness coming out of high school, but he has played through some things this spring; however, he has been suffering from hand and hamstring injuries, so he is limited. Derrick Green has also been injured, and Drake Johnson is coming off that ACL tear. The one constant has been De'Veon Smith, who has been earning praise for his vision and attitude. It's not really a secret that Smith can have a sullen disposition at times.

Fullback: With Sione Houma out due to injury, it's still Joe Kerridge, Brady Pallante, and Chase Winovich getting reps at this spot.

Hit the jump for the rest of the positions.

2014 Season Countdown: #63 Henry Poggi

Henry Poggi (image via Go Blue Wolverine)
Name: Henry Poggi
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 271 lbs.
High school: Baltimore (MD) Gilman
Position: Defensive end
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number: #7
Last year: I ranked Poggi #84 and said he would redshirt. He redshirted.

That most fascinating of defensive line species, the kind with the single-digit number, spent last year on the bench. He came in as a defensive tackle or strongside end, and he was undersized for both in his first year. This spring Poggi was backing up both positions once again, and with a slightly different role on the strong side, a huge weight gain isn't necessary. Poggi won't push to start, and he probably won't be the second guy in, either, but he appears to be the #3 guy at strongside end behind Brennen Beyer and Taco Charlton. Keith Heitzman's move to offense and Chris Wormley's growth into a defensive tackle make the path to playing time a little clearer going forward. Once Beyer graduates after the 2014 season, Charlton and Poggi should be the remaining players at the position. Things are a little murkier on the inside, but Michigan has more depth there and can probably make do without Poggi.

Prediction: Backup strongside end

2013 Season Countdown: #84 Henry Poggi

Henry Poggi
Name: Henry Poggi
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 270 lbs.
High school: Baltimore (MD) Gilman
Position: Defensive tackle
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: N/A
Last year: Poggi was a senior in high school. I gave him a TTB Rating of 79.

Spurning SEC schools Alabama and Tennessee, Poggi committed to Michigan in June 2012. He went on to play in the Under Armour All-America Game and did pretty well there. There was some hand wringing near the end of the recruiting process over Poggi, because he decided to visit the Crimson Tide and stopped talking to the media for a while.  He and his father/high school coach Biff indicated that the visit was more of a chance to see teammates, but I have a suspicion that Henry was waffling on his commitment a little bit.

Regardless, Poggi signed with the Wolverines and will now look to jump into the fray. He's not the biggest defensive tackle around - especially right now - but I think he could play three defensive line positions at some point: nose tackle, 3-tech defensive tackle, and/or strongside end.  As a freshman, his best bet to see the field would probably be 5-tech defensive end, but there are a few older guys to surge past if he wants to play. My guess is that he will spend this year watching.

Prediction: Redshirt

Poll results: Who will be the best defensive lineman in the 2013 class?

Taco Charlton (left, with Shane Morris) has Michigan fans excited
Taco Charlton: 55%
The only early enrollee of the group, defensive end Charlton was listed on the spring roster at 6'6" and 265 lbs.  Technique was a bit of an issue in high school, but he used his hands better in the spring game and notched a couple sacks against the offense's backups.  Not bad for a kid who should be dealing with a bout of senioritis.  The physical attributes are present; his success depends on his work ethic and attention to improving his technique.

Henry Poggi: 32%
Poggi is almost the opposite of Charlton, although he's not a bad athlete.  Poggi plays defensive tackle and has great technique for an incoming freshman, but he's only listed at about 6'4" and 265 lbs.  He probably won't ever be a mammoth defensive lineman, but he's athletic enough and stout enough to be a productive player at Michigan.

Maurice Hurst, Jr.: 12%
Hurst is a 6'2", 305-pounder who also played running back in high school.  The lowest rated player of the trio, he played well in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl and showed some impressive quickness.  He could play nose tackle or 3-tech defensive tackle.

Under Armour All-America Game analysis

Shane Morris did not perform well in the Under Armour All-America Game but the potential is there for a good future
David Dawson, OG: Dawson wore #55 and started at right guard.  He earned a reputation as a nasty run blocker during the week, but it's tough to run the ball in these games because running the ball is largely about repetition, timing, and teamwork.  Part of his pass blocking technique is to lean on people without moving his feet, which will have to be fixed before he can set foot on the field in college.  The fact that he earned a starting spot speaks well for his talent, but he wasn't a standout.

Patrick Kugler, OG: Kugler wore #57, started at left guard, and also was named a team captain.  He looked good when pulling and also seemed to be the best pass protector of the three future Wolverine offensive linemen in this game.  There was an ugly busted blocking assignment that allowed a sack, but it looked like Kugler was expecting a double-team that his linemate ignored.

Shane Morris, QB: Morris wore #12 and was the #2 quarterback.  He showed a strong arm - perhaps the strongest in the game - but he made some inaccurate throws and bad decisions.  He threw one pass into the arms of Vonn Bell that should have been picked off and returned for a touchdown, and later he got suckered into throwing a corner route against Cover 2 when Vernon Hargreaves III was sinking back in coverage; the throw to the flat was open and could have been completed.  However, Morris did have one of the better throws of the game on a fade route to LaQuon Treadwell in the endzone that should have been caught, but Treadwell allowed Hargreaves to rake it out at the last second.  Morris showed a little bit of mobility in getting out of the pocket, and he's quick enough to be effective on rollouts, but he'll never be a significant threat as a runner and took a highlight-reel shot in the open field from Oregon-bound linebacker Matthew Thomas.  Overall, he finished 2/10 passing for 23 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception.  He also carried the ball 2 times for 1 yard.

Henry Poggi, DT:
Poggi wore #17 and started at defensive tackle.  He showed some quickness early in the game, pressuring PSU-bound Christian Hackenberg into an early checkdown, and grabbed a fumble recovery on a botched shotgun snap.  He also has very active hands and doesn't allow himself to stay blocked.  Poggi is still pretty thin for a defensive tackle, and I doubt he can put on 30-ish pounds of good weight in the next eight months to contribute this season.  Overall, he and Kugler had the best performances of the group.  Poggi finished with 1 tackle, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 quarterback hurries.

Logan Tuley-Tillman, OT: Tuley-Tillman wore #72 and was a backup offensive tackle.  He did okay in pass protection at times, but he generally stands too high and is susceptible to the bull rush.  Then when he gets ready for the bull rush, defensive ends can run around him.  He needs to adjust quicker.  There was one screen play called to the left where he let his guy run right past him untouched, which forced the quarterback into a hurried throw and an interception (that should have been a pick six).  However, when he chooses to do so, he moves his feet well and his wingspan allows him to keep defenders out of his body.

Here's a boxscore for the game.

Senior Highlights: Henry Poggi

You can watch the video for yourself, but I have some slight concerns about how it seems that Poggi is regularly slow off the ball when playing defense.  I only saw one or two plays where he looks like he's getting off the ball as quickly as his fellow defensive linemen.
