Poll: Who should be the backup free safety?

Freshman safety Marvin Robinson

A couple weeks ago, a poll question asked "Now that Vladimir Emilien has transferred, who should be the backup free safety?"  Here were the results out of 98 votes:

Marvin Robinson: 61%
Ray Vinopal: 34%
Brandin Hawthorne: 4%
Other: 0%

The poll winner, Marvin Robinson, is still listed as the backup to Jordan Kovacs at Bandit.  So the coaches have obviously chosen Vinopal to move up from fourth string to second string (remember, aside from the Emilien transfer, Jared Van Slyke is out for the season due to injury).

I'd like to see what Marvin Robinson can do on the football field, whether it's at Bandit or free safety.  I think he's a superior athlete to Vinopal.  However, there were some questions about Robinson's speed coming out of high school, and it probably wouldn't be a good idea to concentrate multiple linebacker/safety hybrids at the free safety position, like Robinson and Cameron Gordon.  I'm okay with Robinson staying at Bandit for this year, but I do think that Michigan should continue to look for solutions at free safety.  I don't know that a long-term answer at FS is currently on the roster.

  2. @ horn

I hope you're right. If only the coaches can convince him to come north...

  3. keep up with ur current pace(winning games while showcasing (no offense) horrible defense) and he and every other defensive player in the nation should be looking at michigan.

  4. Assuming we land a 4* safety (say someone with recruiting hype equivalent to Sean Parker), do you think that player would be in better shape to start in 2011 than Gordon, Vinopal, Robinson?
Or should 2011 be a secondary consideration to 2012 and beyond? I tend to favor returning starters and backups with experience to true freshman.

Bonus "mailbag" type question: MGoBlog was all over Roh's skills as a LB this week, and in the past you've been all over Roh as a DE (at least on running plays). If Roh is limited in coverage as a LB and limited against the run as a DE, is he purely a pass-rush specialist? This seems like a very negative view of Roh, who as a true freshman starter was being hyped as an all-conference type impact player. Wondering what your thoughts are on his long-term position and potential. I think he can bulk up and be a full-time DE next year, but I think I recall you saying otherwise in the past.

  5. Cameron Gordon is S L O W, S L O W....he doesn't not have good instincts, is not a good tackler, he does not take good angles to the ball, basically he doesn't have any of the intangebles of playing the position except the size. It is hard to believe UM doesn't have a better athlete with football instincts to fill that position.
