Ex-Wolverine Updates

Ray Vinopal had 2 interceptions last weekend.
TE Pharaoh Brown: Brown had 3 catches for 17 yards and 1 touchdown, but #3 Oregon lost to #5 Stanford by a score of 26-20. Brown's was the Ducks' final touchdown that gave them a chance for an onside kick and the win, but they failed to recover the kick.

CB Dallas Crawford: Crawford started at running back with Duke Johnson out due to a broken ankle, and he responded with 10 carries for 37 yards and 1 touchdown. He also caught 3 passes for 41 yards, but the Hurricanes lost for the second week in a row, this time 42-24 to Virginia Tech.

Defensive coordinator Ron English: English was fired as head coach of Eastern Michigan for numerous reasons, including losing and berating his players . . . who responded with a win over fellow MAC bottom feeder Western Michigan.

K Anthony Fera: Fera was 4/4 on field goals with hits of 24, 25, 29, and 37. He also punted 6 times for a 42.8 yard average and landed 3 inside the 20-yard line. He was 5/5 on extra points.

K Matt Goudis: Goudis hit a 49-yard field goal and was 3/3 on extra points in Miami's 42-24 loss to Virginia Tech.

Linebackers coach Jay Hopson: Hopson, now the head coach at Alcorn State, beat Prairie View by a score of 50-35 and moved to 8-3 on the year.

S Carvin Johnson: Johnson had 8 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 pass breakup, and 1 interception returned for 41 yards. His Hampton squad beat North Carolina Central by a score of 29-21.

LB Mike Jones: Jones had just 1 tackle as now 1-9 Western Michigan lost to 2-8 Eastern Michigan by a score of 35-32 in two overtimes.

Quarterbacks coach Scot Loeffler: Loeffler, now the QB coach and OC at Virginia Tech, helped the Hokies beat the Miami Hurricanes by a score of 42-24. Quarterback Logan Thomas was 25/31 passing for 366 yards and 2 touchdowns, and running back Trey Edmunds ran 14 times for 74 yards and 4 touchdowns. Altogether, Virginia Tech had 549 yards. They're now 7-3 on the year.

Offensive coordinator Stan Parrish: Parrish, who was Michigan's quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator from 1996-2001, was promoted from OC to interim head coach of Eastern Michigan after English's firing.

WR Jerald Robinson: Robinson had 4 catches for 48 yards in Walsh University's 33-21 loss to Glenville State.

S Marvin Robinson: Robinson led Ferris State with 8 tackles in a 42-10 win over Northwood.

Head coach Rich Rodriguez: Arizona lost a close one to UCLA by a score of 31-26. Running back Ka'Deem Carey had 28 carries for 149 yards and 1 touchdown. The Wildcats fell to 6-3 on the year.

S Ray Vinopal: Vinopal had 7 tackles, .5 tackles for loss, 1 forced fumble, and 2 interceptions returned for 40 yards in Pitt's 28-21 win over Notre Dame.

CB Adrian Witty: Witty led the Cincinnati Bearcats with 11 tackles, including 1 TFL, and 1 pass breakup in 28-25 win over Southern Methodist.

  1. As always, I enjoyed this update post.

Stan Parrish (1-0 at EMU) is off to a roaring start! There's hope yet for this branch of the Carr coaching tree. History suggests it will get rough if he stays around: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stan_Parrish

He did well at Marshall, anyway.

  2. Hopefully next year, Loeffler won't be in the "EX" Wolverines category, if you know what I mean ;)

    1. Yes, hopefully he will be. I do not want Loeffler as OC.

    2. What? Why not? He's shown to be above Borges, and his QB's actually develop.

    3. Logan Thomas has improved his completion percentage, but he's thrown 13 touchdowns and 12 picks, and he's still doing worse than he did as a sophomore. His quarterbacks at Auburn threw 7 touchdowns and 15 interceptions. Mike Gerardi at Temple went from 10 touchdowns and 8 interceptions before Loeffler to 3 and 2 under Loeffler. John Brantley at Florida went from completing 75% of his passes, throwing 7 touchdowns and 0 interceptions in Loeffler's first year to completing 61% of his passes for 9 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in Loeffler's second year.

I'm not seeing a whole lot of "development."

    4. You're right about them for sure, but what about his work with Greise, Brady, Henson, Navarre, and Henne?

    5. That was as a QB coach, not an offensive coordinator. There's a difference.

  3. Including Parrish and Loeffler leaves me feeling ambivalent.

On the one hand, I'm happy that you're including OCs here which may or not be hinting to a potential replacement for Borges if that's the direction Hoke and Brandon want to take this.

On the other hand, if those are the OC candidates in the pool we have to choose from I'm hoping we retain Borges.

Are there any up and coming OCs you think would be suitable replacements for trying to run manball? Any offensive minds currently out there that would want to accept a job at Michigan? Do you think if there were some qualified candidates Hoke would let them run their own offense if they wanted to bring a spread back to Michigan?

Are there any OL coaches out there that you feel would be willing to replace Funk?

    1. With Parrish it's really just the fact that English got fired, putting Parrish in the news. And with Loeffler, it's really just the fact that people have been bringing him up as a potential replacement for Borges if he gets fired. I am not a fan of either one.

I don't keep track of offensive coordinators much, because I'm not a college football reporter. I concentrate mostly on Michigan. That being said, I envy what Wisconsin has done, and I think Michigan wants to move in the direction of that style of play offensively. I might be looking in the direction of Wisconsin, Pitt, and Arkansas to find the next offensive coordinator.

    2. I think the pool is limited to pro-style types, or at least those who say they will run it. I think Cam Cameron will get a lot of talk but, like for Miles, it's a lateral move at best leaving LSU for the same job.

I don't know why you'd go to Arkansas, they've struggled - I don't think Bielema had a great deal to do with Wisconsin's success. Oregon State is another school with ties to the Wisconsin system that has done fairly well with minimal recruiting draw.

Stanford is the school that's I'd really look at closely...and talk to Harbaugh about it.

    3. Jim Chaney (Arkansas OC) - Looks like a reasonable candidate. Proven success at quite a few stops.
Andy Ludwig (Wisco OC) - Looks like he's had an interesting career path... strangely similar to Borges with a lot of the same stops. Wouldn't be opposed.
Joe Rudolph (Pitt OC) - Doesn't have enough stops to draw a definitive conclusion.
Paul Chryst (Pitt HC) - If he ever wants to move back down the coaching ladder to OC.... I would fully support his decision.

    4. I don't find any of those guys real inspiring.

Mike Bloomgren, Stanford's OC is 36 years old. Don't know if he'd leave there, but if you have him full control of the O - he might.

  4. Thunder, I've been saying this for weeks now. How about Bob Bostad as the new OL coach?

    1. I don't know a whole lot about him personally, but yeah, based on his track record, that would be the type of guy I would support. Hoke has been recruiting to run a power blocking scheme, so he ought to build an offense and a coaching staff around that, too.

    2. I think he'd be easy to get, too, due to how bad Tampa Bay is doing...Would you say Funk is a done deal?

    3. Seems like the kind of guy who would fit well...you might need a pretty good passing game coordinator/QB coach to help him though.
