Ondre Pipkins will transfer to Texas Tech
Joe Schad announced on Twitter that Ondre Pipkins is transferring from Michigan to Texas Tech. As a player going into his fourth year of college, he will have to sit out the 2015 season and will be eligible in 2016.
As far as Texas Tech's depth chart goes, the Red Raiders have three seniors, one sophomore, and one freshman on their 2015 depth chart at the defensive tackle spots. When Pipkins is eligible to play in 2016, he will be the most experienced guy on the roster and should be able to find some significant playing time as long as his injuries don't cause him further trouble.

Ondre Pipkins, Ex-Wolverine
![]() |
| Ondre Pipkins |
Regardless, Pipkins is now out of the picture. I had recently placed him at #66 on the 2015 Season Countdown (LINK), and I did not expect him to make a big impact this season even if he had stayed. He tore his ACL in the middle of his sophomore year, but in 24 career games, he made just 23 tackles and 1 tackle for loss. He was a promising high school prospect who did not seem destined to match his recruiting profile once he saw the field in college.
Pipkins has received permission to talk to Florida State, Georgia State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Tennessee, and Washington State. Former Wolverine Josh Furman was drafted out of Oklahoma State this spring after playing the 2014 season there as a graduate transfer. Former Michigan linebackers/cornerbacks coach Roy Manning is now coaching at Washington State.

2015 Season Countdown: #66 Ondre Pipkins
![]() |
| Ondre Pipkins |
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 317 lbs.
High school: Kansas City (MO) Park Hill
Position: Defensive tackle
Class: Senior
Jersey number: #56
Last year: I ranked Pipkins #28 and said he would be the starting nose tackle with 20 tackles and 1 sack. He was a backup nose tackle and made 9 tackles.
This is maybe the biggest drop in the short history of my season countdowns, but here Pipkins falls 38 spots since last year. He tore his ACL in October of 2013, and while he was not expected to recover from his ACL tear quite as quickly as smaller guys (Jake Ryan, Jake Butt, Russell Bellomy, etc.), I thought he should be somewhat effective toward the end of the year. Instead, he played in just six games and made 9 tackles. Meanwhile, players like Ryan Glasgow, Bryan Mone, and Maurice Hurst, Jr. got more playing time.
Pipkins's time at Michigan will soon come to an end, and chances are slim that he lives up to the 5-star status he had coming out of Missouri as a high schooler. He still has the size to be a nose tackle, but the burst appears to be lacking and he probably can't be much more than an eater of space. On top of that, all three of the aforementioned players return. Glasgow was effective, Mone showed more flashes than Pipkins ever really has, and Hurst earned some spring practice buzz to go along with his solid redshirt freshman season. The nose tackle position seems to be in good hands, but those good hands do not seem to belong to Pipkins.
Prediction: Backup nose tackle
UPDATE: Now that the news has broken about Pipkins's transfer, I can "officially" say that I have expected his departure for the past couple months. Regardless, until it was announced by him or by the university, I was going to place him in the countdown where I saw him fitting in. Since he sits here at #66, you can see that I do not view this as a big loss.

18 Wolverines Who Might Get Drafted in 2016
![]() |
| Jourdan Lewis |
----------------
Michigan recently had three players drafted in the 2015 NFL Draft - two seniors and a true junior, the latter of which was talented but never really hit his ceiling while in college. Over the past few days, I have seen some gnashing of teeth amongst Michigan fans about whether or not anyone will be drafted in 2016. It's a somewhat valid concern because Michigan does not appear to have many superstars, and nobody leaps out as a likely first or second round pick for next year. However, there are numerous guys who could find their names called next spring. Here is a rundown of the players who could potentially get a phone calling bearing good news during next year's draft. Some of them are young players who might make the choice - wise or not - to leave after their junior or redshirt sophomore seasons.
SENIORS
Joe Bolden, LB (Sr.): The 6'3", 232 lb. senior became a part-time starter in 2013 and a full-time starter last year when he finished second on the team with 102 tackles; he also had 4 tackles for loss and 2 sacks. He will be counted on once again to be a leader on the defense, alongside fellow inside linebacker Desmond Morgan. Bolden has never been the most athletic linebacker, but he is known as a smart, high-character guy who usually gets to the right spot. If Jake Ryan is the standard for a 4th rounder, then Bolden might be a late-round selection.
Blake Countess (RS Sr.): Countess has had an up-and-down career for the Wolverines. After showing promise as a freshman, he tore his ACL in 2012. Then he had 6 interceptions in 2013, followed by zero - and basically losing his job - as a redshirt junior in 2014, when he did have 24 tackles and 3 pass breakups. If the odd year trend continues, he's poised for a big year here in 2015. The 5'10", 185 lb. Countess will be battling Jourdan Lewis and Wayne Lyons for playing time, but Countess has a shot to get drafted pretty high if he performs like he did two years ago.
Graham Glasgow, OL (RS Sr.): The 6'6", 303 lb. Glasgow comes with some off-the-field issues having to do with alcohol, but he has been Michigan's most consistent lineman over the past two seasons. He has the ability to play center, guard, or tackle, although his best fit is probably the guard position. He could probably carry some additional weight if necessary. If Michigan finds success on the ground, much of the credit will probably go to Glasgow, who will probably be the starting center this year now that Jack Miller has departed.
Hit the jump for some more seniors and some underclassmen who could be tempted to make a jump to the NFL.

2014 Season Countdown: #28 Ondre Pipkins
![]() |
| Ondre Pipkins |
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 306 lbs.
High school: Kansas City (MO) Park Hill
Position: Defensive tackle
Class: Junior
Jersey number: #56
Last year: I ranked Pipkins #31 and said he would be the backup nose tackle. He made 7 tackles as a backup nose tackle before tearing his ACL.
Last year was a tough year for Pipkins, who was a 5-star to ESPN coming out of high school. In what perhaps should have been a breakout second year, he tore his ACL in early October against Minnesota. Even up to that point, he was not living up to that 5-star status and was playing behind fifth year senior Quinton Washington, who was also underperforming a bit. Between those two guys, the nose tackle position was somewhat underwhelming, and the coaching staff at times had to resort to walk-on Ryan Glasgow and the undersized Jibreel Black, a DE-turned-DT. Nose tackles typically don't put up great numbers, but the difference between someone like Mike Martin - who graduated after the 2011 season - and last year's rotation was stark.
Pipkins should be ready to go for the opener on August 30th, but ACL injuries are tricky, especially for big guys. Ideally, the centerpiece of the defense would be able to be ranked higher than #28 in this sort of thing, but the position is a huge question mark right now. Michigan had a lackluster run defense last season, often seeming soft in the middle. They have moved outside linebacker Jake Ryan to the middle, but both projected starting defensive tackles (Pipkins and Chris Wormley) have had ACL tears within the last two years, and nobody on the interior defensive line has proven himself as a legitimate starter in the Big Ten. The hope is that Pipkins can hold his ground in the middle, but I am not confident that his burst - which was perhaps his most impressive trait coming out of high school - can return ten months after that kind of knee injury. He will probably be the first one on the field, but there will be plenty of rotation with the likes of Glasgow, redshirt freshman Maurice Hurst, Jr., redshirt sophomore Willie Henry, Glasgow, and freshman Bryan Mone. The Wolverines have plenty of bodies, but production is lacking.
Prediction: Starting nose tackle; 20 tackles, 1 sack

2013 Season Countdown: #31 Ondre Pipkins
![]() |
| Ondre Pipkins |
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 308 lbs.
High school: Kansas City (MO) Park Hill
Position: Defensive tackle
Class: Sophomore
Jersey number: #56
Last year: I ranked Pipkins #31 and said he would be the backup nose tackle. He had 7 tackles and .5 tackles for loss.
Pipkins entered last season as a highly valued player, partly because nobody was sure what kind of nose tackle Quinton Washington would make. Washington turned out to be pretty solid, albeit unspectacular, so Pipkins didn't need to be splendid. That was a good thing, because he was very large and out of shape when he arrived on campus, and he never seemed to get his conditioning going during the year. This year he's listed at 308 lbs. and looked slimmer in the spring game, so hopefully he will be a little more explosive.
Fifth year senior Washington is back, so Pipkins will likely be a backup once again. I think he will be a very good player once he gets in shape, so that could make a solid one-two punch at the nose for Michigan this season. In addition to those two, Michigan has solid redshirt freshman Willie Henry who could play nose tackle if needed, so there are several options. Pipkins was mostly a space eater last season, but this season he should be a little bit more of a penetrator now that he's shed some pounds.
Prediction: Backup nose tackle

Defensive Line Preview: Michigan vs. South Carolina
![]() |
| South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney might be the nation's best defensive lineman (image via ESPN) |
Starters: The Wolverines run a 4-3 Under defense. Senior strongside end Craig Roh (6'5", 281 lbs.) is a four-year starter and has 36 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 4 sacks on the season. The nominal starter at weakside end is sophomore Brennen Beyer (6'3", 252 lbs.), who has made 18 tackles and forced 1 fumble on the year. Redshirt junior nose tackle Quinton Washington (6'4", 300 lbs.) has improved throughout the year but has notched just 29 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 forced fumble on the season; he's more of a space eater than a playmaker. Senior defensive tackle William Campbell (6'5", 308 lbs.) has made 44 tackles, but has just 1.5 tackles for loss and 1 sack. They don't make a ton of penetration, but these guys eat up blockers and allow the linebackers to flow to the ball.
Backups: Sophomore weakside end Frank Clark (6'2", 262 lbs.) is the most prominent backup and the biggest playmaker of the entire unit; he has 25 tackles, 9 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, 1 fumble recovery, and 3 pass breakups on the year. Junior defensive tackle Jibreel Black (6'2", 279 lbs.) has 18 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 2 pass breakups. Redshirt freshman Keith Heitzman (6'3", 270 lbs.) backs up Roh and has 7 tackles, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 fumble recovery on the year. Freshman nose tackle Ondre Pipkins (6'3", 340 lbs.) has just 6 tackles on the season.
SOUTH CAROLINA
Starters: The Gamecocks run a 4-2-5 defense, basically with two strong safeties. Sophomore weakside end Jadeveon Clowney (6'6", 256 lbs.) is the star of the team; he's an All-American who made some Heisman ballots with 50 tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 2 pass breakups. The line is bookended by fifth year senior Devin Taylor (6'8", 267 lbs.), who ended the regular season with 40 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 3 sacks, 5 pass breakups, and 1 fumble recovery. In between are fifth year senior nose tackle Byron Jerideau (6'1", 316 lbs.) and sophomore defensive tackle Kelcy Quarles (6'4", 286 lbs.). Jerideau gets a little bit of push with 39 tackles, 4.5 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks on the year. Quarles has 36 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.
Backups: Senior strongside end Aldrick Fordham (6'4", 269 lbs.) is Taylor's pass rushing sub, making 21 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, and 2 forced fumbles. Even Clowney's backup, redshirt junior Chaz Sutton (6'5", 248 lbs.), can get after the quarterback with 23 tackles, 7 tackles for loss, 5 sacks, 2 forced fumbles, and 1 pass batted down. Redshirt freshman Gerald Dixon, Jr. (6'3", 304 lbs.) and redshirt sophomore J.T. Surratt (6'2", 295 lbs.) are slightly less productive as the backup defensive tackles, with 22 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, .5 sacks, 1 interception, and 1 pass breakup among them.
THE TAKEAWAY
Okay, this isn't really a question. The Gamecocks have the better defensive line by far. Both of their backup defensive ends have put up better numbers than Michigan's most productive starter. They're #5 in sacks (3.33 per game) and #15 against the run (119 yards/game). Even with an All-American in Taylor Lewan at left tackle, South Carolina will likely give Michigan's offensive line fits.
Advantage: South Carolina

2012 Season Countdown: #29 Ondre Pipkins
![]() |
| Ondre Pipkins |
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 337 lbs.
High school: Kansas City (MO) Park Hill
Position: Defensive tackle
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: #56
Last year: Pipkins was in high school. He had 60 tackles, 10 tackles for loss, 4 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, and 3 pass breakups.
TTB Rating: 90
Perhaps the most anticipated arrival in 2012 will be defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins. The future Michigan nose tackle said that he played the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at approximately 360 lbs., so getting down to 337 by July has been quite a feat. Still, 330-350 lbs. was too heavy for the 6'5" William Campbell (who has slimmed down to about 308 lbs.), so Pipkins probably needs to continue to shed the weight. Pipkins tracked down all-everything wide receiver Stefon Diggs in the aforementioned all-star game and made some plays pursuing to the sideline, so he moves pretty well for a big man, even with excess weight.
As far as his freshman season goes, he will almost surely be pressed into action. Michigan's depth on the interior of the defensive line is rather non-existent, with only a handful of defensive tackles returning. The presumed starters are William Campbell at nose tackle and Jibreel Black at 3-tech, while backups Quinton Washington, Richard Ash, and Ken Wilkins return. None of those backups has produced much thus far, so the door is wide open for Pipkins to step in. He probably doesn't have a chance to start this season, but he could be Campbell's primary backup or a short yardage contributor. I have a feeling that he might start off the season third on the depth chart, but will probably move his way up as the season goes along. My expectations are high for his career overall, but offensive line and defensive line (especially defensive tackle) are notoriously difficult transitions for freshmen.
Prediction: Backup nose tackle

Poll Results: Who will be Michigan's starting nose tackle against Alabama?
![]() |
| William Campbell (#73) is the frontrunner for the nose tackle position in 2012 |
Believe it or not, Campbell is now a senior. The former 5-star recruit has spent the last three seasons as a backup defensive tackle and offensive guard. He should have redshirted in 2009 and, in an ideal world, would have two seasons of eligibility left. Unfortunately, this will be his last hurrah. Campbell is 6'5" and around 320 lbs., and when he fires off low, not many offensive linemen stand a chance; however, that's about a 50/50 proposition. Last season he made 14 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, 2 sacks, and 1 fumble recovery as Mike Martin's primary backup. He'll probably get the first crack at taking Martin's starting spot
Ondre Pipkins: 17%
Pipkins is a 6'3", 330 lb. incoming freshman who won't hit campus until June. It's notoriously difficult for true freshmen to play on either side of the line, so he would normally be a huge long shot . . . but the lack of productive depth at the position suggests Pipkins will be in the running for playing time.
Quinton Washington: 5%
The 6'4", 302 lb. made a bit of a sacrifice a couple seasons ago when he switched positions from offensive guard to defensive tackle. When I watch him play defense, I see an offensive guard playing defense. He's a very strong, stout player, but he's not athletic enough to be a real playmaker. I think he lacks the qualities that the coaches are looking for in a starter, but he's a decent sub and goal line player.
Richard Ash: 2%
Ash will be a redshirt sophomore this fall and has yet to see significant playing time in college. He did play in three games in 2011, but did not accrue any statistics. As the voting indicates, I think Ash is the biggest long shot to start at the position.
Other: 0% (3 votes)
I'm not sure who was earning votes here.

2012 Recruiting Awards
![]() |
| Kyle Kalis is my pick to be the best recruit from the 2012 class |
Best Overall Recruit: OG/OT Kyle Kalis
This was a pretty tough choice between Kalis and James Ross, but I'm going to go with Kalis, in part because of his NFL potential and his size. Whereas Ross needs to add a little bit of bulk and even then might not be big enough for many NFL teams, Kalis has the size, technique, athleticism, and pedigree to play at the next level.
Best Offensive Recruit: OG/OT Kyle Kalis
The 2012 class isn't deep with offensive stars, so this wasn't a very difficult choice. But I think Kyle Kalis is about as college-ready as high school linemen come. He has excellent technique and very good size (6'5", 305 lbs.). He could be on the two-deep this fall, and I'm guessing he'll be at least a three-year starter for the Wolverines.
Best Defensive Recruit: LB James Ross
The best NFL prospect of the bunch might be defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins, but for their three-to-five years in college, I'll take Ross as the best defensive player. He could challenge Desmond Morgan for playing time as a true freshman, and by year two, he might have the starting WILL job locked down.
Recruit Most Likely to Make an Early Impact: DT Ondre Pipkins
I don't think it's a good thing when freshmen enter school knowing that the coaches almost have to play them, but that's the situation Pipkins will find himself in this fall. With Michigan's top two defensive tackles having left and only unproven guys remaining, he's a virtual lock to see significant time this fall.
Fastest Recruit: RB/PR/KR Dennis Norfleet
Running back Drake Johnson and wide receiver Jehu Chesson are high school track stars, but I'm giving Norfleet the nod due to his short-area quickness, too. It takes Johnson and Chesson a little bit longer to accelerate than it does Norfleet.
Strongest Recruit: DT Ondre Pipkins
Pipkins will have no excuse for failing to be the strongest player on Michigan's team in a few years. He's 6'3" and 330 lbs. already.
Best Under-the-Radar Recruit: DT Willie Henry
The more I think about the defensive line coaches at Michigan getting their hands on Henry, the more excited I get. Henry is a very athletic kid for his size and should be a penetrating-type defensive tackle for Michigan in the years to come. Outside of classmate Ondre Pipkins, he might very well be the best DT recruit since Mike Martin in 2008.
Most Overrated Recruit: OT Blake Bars
Bars has the unfortunate luck of coming to Michigan in the midst of two great offensive line recruiting hauls. He could very well get lost in the shuffle with guys like Kalis, Erik Magnuson, Logan Tuley-Tillman, Kyle Bosch, etc.
Most Likely to Redshirt: OT Blake Bars
As an offensive lineman, you're likely to redshirt, anyway. But Bars has some weight and strength to add before he sees the field, and he's the least likely to play early, in my opinion. Kalis already has the size and technique, Ben Braden is reportedly 325 lbs., and I think Erik Magnuson is a little more advanced (although I expect him to redshirt, too).
Personal Favorite Recruit: LB James Ross
For the second year in a row, I'm picking a weakside linebacker. Last year it was Antonio Poole. This year it's Ross. I love these fast, downhill players who can make plays in the backfield, in pass coverage, and at the line of scrimmage. Ross is one of the most technically sound football players I've seen since I started following recruiting, and that makes him incredibly fun for me to watch.

| Melanie Iglesias smiles in celebration of Michigan's awesome recruiting class |
Ondre Pipkins is mentioned as one of three players who should make an immediate impact, and Michigan has more players (10) on the All Big Ten list than any other school, including Ohio State (7), which finished second. Wisconsin had two, and one was picked from each of Michigan State, Minnesota, and Nebraska.

TTB Ratings: Reason Behind the Ratings
![]() |
| Farmington Hills (MI) Harrison DE Mario Ojemudia made a significant jump in the new TTB ratings |
Yesterday I posted the new TTB Ratings for Michigan's class of 2012 (which I reserve the right to change until after Michigan's recruiting class is completed), and obviously, there were some significant changes for a few players. A couple kids have moved up or down a few points, but today I'll try to explain the reasons behind the biggest movers.
Ondre Pipkins - NT - Kansas City (MO) Park Hill
Pipkins moved up from an 82 to a 90. I was impressed with Pipkins' performance in the Army All-American Bowl. He looked to me to be a little bit out of shape, but I guess 330-pound defensive tackles rarely look like they're in shape. However, when he had the gas to go 100%, he was a terror. He also showed good athleticism in chasing down quarterback Chad Voytik and wide receiver Stefon Diggs, causing a fumble against the latter. Pipkins dominated the high school competition in Kansas City, but doing it against elite competition suggests that he'll be able to have success in the Big Ten, too.
Joe Bolden - MIKE - Cincinnati (OH) Colerain
Bolden moved up from a 77 to an 88. I was slightly disappointed that Bolden couldn't bring down a few more ballcarriers in the Under Armour All-American Game, but he was the week's best tackler in practice and he was very good at diagnosing plays. I've always liked his decisiveness and intelligence, but he showed throughout the season and the all-star game that he has the speed and athleticism to be a very good Big Ten linebacker. He needs to add weight and he would benefit from a redshirt year so he can improve his upper body strength.
Jehu Chesson - WR - St. Louis (MO) Ladue Horton Watkins
Chesson moved up from a 77 to an 87. As I consider the future of Michigan's offense under Brady Hoke and Al Borges, I realize the value of a jump-ball guy like Chesson. He's excellent at high-pointing the ball and catching it with his hands, and that bodes well for his future for Michigan. He looks like an Adrian Arrington clone, and without another downfield threat on the squad, he could be that guy who can stretch the field as soon as next season.
Mario Ojemudia - WDE - Farmington Hills (MI) Harrison
Ojemudia moved up from a 67 to a 78. Ojemudia played defensive end/outside linebacker in the Marine game, and his performance wasn't very impressive . . . but since he mostly played defensive tackle in high school, I'm going to give him a little bit of a pass. One of his strengths is getting off the ball quickly, and without the ball right under his nose, his reaction time was affected negatively. However, his senior highlight film shows a guy who can use his hands to get off blocks, and he reminds me of the freshman version of Frank Clark. Those two are very similar players, and Ojemudia looks like he'll be able to fill that weakside end position nicely.
Blake Bars - C - Nashville (TN) Montgomery Bell
Bars dropped from a 71 to a 62. I wasn't extremely high on Bars to begin with, because he seems a little slow-footed and doesn't seem like a great athlete. He looks like more of a backup and maybe a late-career starter as a tackle, but now that Caleb Stacey has decommitted in favor of Cincinnati, that might require the 6'5" Bars to play center. Since he lacks experience at the position and because of his lack of quickness, I think he might struggle inside.
Jeremy Clark - FS - Madisonville (KY) North Hopkins
Clark moved up from a 49 to a 59. When I first heard about Clark and saw film on him, I thought he might be a big fish in a small pond. But the more film I saw of him, the more I think he can make an impact at the next level. He's a lanky kid who gets by on athleticism, so I think college is going to be a bit of a wake-up call for him. He probably won't be the type who comes in and lights the world on fire. He'll have to improve his pursuit angles and he'll have to become a more fundamental tackler, but his height (6'4") and flat-out speed should provide a nice athlete on the back end to work with for four or five years down the road.
Kaleb Ringer - WILL - Clayton (OH) Northmont
Ringer dropped from a 64 to a 39. As you might be able to tell from his original rating of 64, I wasn't too high on Ringer from the start. However, the more that I have seen and heard of Ringer, the more I'm concerned about him remaining with the program. I do think he has the physical talent to be a backup, but let's face it - guys from every recruiting class get lost in the shuffle, become career backups, transfer, etc. My gut feeling on Ringer is that he'll be one of those guys, especially with all the other talent at linebacker in the 2012 class.

Rivals: Army Bowl Top Performers
After Saturday's U.S. Army All-American Bowl, Rivals posted a breakdown of the top performers from the West Team (including Ondre Pipkins) and the East Team (including Kyle Kalis). Then national recruiting analyst Mike Farrell gives out some awards from the week.
Pipkins is mentioned repeatedly in Farrell's awards piece, and the gist is good. He doesn't have great things to say about Erik Magnuson, which I think is funny because Magnuson was playing a new position, started at left guard, and played the entire game (at least from what I remember). Additionally, I thought he held up pretty well, although his performance certainly wasn't perfect. Offensive line is typically the roughest position in all-star games because these kids don't have a lot of times to work on protections, communication, and combo blocks, so I take offensive line performance with a grain of salt. In other words . . . poo on Farrell.

| Uriah LeMay (#81) was offered by Michigan late last week (image via Mint Hill Times) |
ADDED TO THE BOARD
Wylie (TX) East wide receiver Marcell Ateman, a 2013 prospect, was offered on Saturday. Ateman is a 6'5", 180 lb. kid with offers from Arizona, Baylor, and Tennessee. Last season he caught 67 passes for 1,047 yards and 10 touchdowns. Ateman isn't a burner, but he's a legitimate jump ball threat with his size
Washington (D.C.) H.D. Woodson cornerback Kenny Crawley de-committed from Tennessee. Crawley is rumored to be unhappy with the coaching situation for the Volunteers and will likely go elsewhere for college. His destination probably won't be Michigan, however.
Oxon Hill (MD) Potomac cornerback Ronald Darby de-committed from Notre Dame. Darby is a 5'11", 172 lb. athlete with elite speed (a reported 4.37 forty). Darby has never shown much interest in Michigan and instead plans to concentrate on Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, and LSU.
Monaca (PA) Central Valley wide receiver Robert Foster, a 2013 prospect, was offered by Michigan. Foster is a 6'3", 170 lb. speedster with offers from Florida, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, and USC, among others. He has been named a 5-star already by Scout.
Matthews (NC) Butler wide receiver Uriah LeMay, a 2013 prospect, received an offer from Michigan. The 6'2", 188 lb. prospect attends the alma mater of former Michigan safety Jamar Adams and 2011 linebacker Kris Frost, and he's also the younger brother of class of 2011 quarterback Christian LeMay, whom Rich Rodriguez offered and now plays for Georgia. Uriah has offers from Arkansas, Auburn, Clemson, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and Virginia Tech, among others.
Charlotte (NC) Mallard Creek wide receiver Marquez North, a 2013 prospect, received his offer from the Wolverines. North's former teammate is D.J. Humphries, a class of 2012 offensive tackle who is committed to Florida. The 6'3", 205 lb. receiver has offers from Clemson, Florida, South Carolina, and many others.
OFF THE BOARD
Miami (FL) Norland linebacker Keith Brown committed to Louisville at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Brown had been committed to Illinois at one point, but the firing of Ron Zook sent him southward.
Olney (MD) Good Counsel running back Wes Brown committed to Maryland at the Under Armour All-America Game. The 6'1", 200-pounder is the former teammate of Michigan cornerback Blake Countess and uncommitted 2012 wide receiver Stefon Diggs.
Miami (FL) Columbus safety Deon Bush committed to Miami at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The 6'1", 185-pounder picked a Hurricanes hat over those from Alabama and Auburn.
Baltimore (MD) Gilman cornerback Cyrus Jones committed to Alabama at the Under Armour All-America Game. Jones is an all-around athlete with the ability to run (948 yards, 13 touchdowns), catch (635 yards, 6 touchdowns), return (4 return touchdowns), and cover (3 interceptions).
Monrovia (CA) Monrovia defensive tackle Ellis McCarthy committed to Cal at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. McCarthy is listed at 6'5", 311 lbs. but was quick enough to play defensive end for the West Team.
Tampa (FL) Jefferson defensive end Tyriq McCord committed to Miami at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The 6'3", 222 lb. edge rusher was praised this week for his speed around the corner and how quickly he got after the quarterbacks.
Centerville (OH) Centerville defensive end Ifeadi Odenigbo committed to Northwestern on Saturday. Odenigbo mentioned repeatedly that he would be choosing his school based largely on academics, and he couldn't really go wrong with become a Wildcat. Odenigbo did an excellent job of rushing the passer in the Under Armour All-America Game.
Westlake Village (CA) Oaks Christian wide receiver Jordan Payton committed to Cal on Friday. At one time Payton looked like a lock to Michigan and there were rumors that he had committed to the Wolverines, but as time wore on, he also became enamored with Notre Dame and then Cal. Payton was committed to USC at one time, too.
Ramsey (NJ) Don Bosco Prep safety Elijah Shumate committed to Notre Dame at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Shumate is the teammate of Michigan target Yuri Wright, who also played in the game but did not announce a college destination.
Sacramento (CA) Grant safety Shaq Thompson committed to Cal at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Thompson is 6'1", 195 lbs. but played like a man child in Saturday's game. Thompson was considering an official visit to Michigan at one point, but that seemed to be in connection with Jordan Payton's interest in the Wolverines. Once Payton's interest waned, Thompson's did, too.
ALL-STAR GAMES
Cincinnati (OH) Colerain linebacker Joe Bolden was named a captain and starter for the Black Team in the Under Armour All-America Game. Bolden was praised throughout the week of practice for his instincts, intensity, and hitting. In the game he was once again solid, making 7 total tackles. Rivals crowned him the best tackler at the game, which bodes well for his future as a middle linebacker at Michigan. The 6'2", 225-pounder graduated early and is enrolled at Michigan, where he'll take part in spring practices. Perhaps more importantly, he will join Jake Ryan in the ranks of dreamy, long-haired linebackers.
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech linebacker Royce Jenkins-Stone started at middle linebacker for the West Team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He made 1 tackle but showed good speed and was hustling on special teams. The East ran the ball outside most of the time, so he didn't get a ton of chances to make plays in the middle.
Lakewood (OH) St. Edward's offensive guard Kyle Kalis played about half the game at right guard for the East Team and looked quite capable. He was among the East's top performers on the offensive line throughout the week, and several national observers noted that his technique looks solid. They also noted that he looked more comfortable at guard than tackle, which Kalis himself acknowledged at one point. I have always maintained that he looked like a future guard to me, so I'm glad national scouts - and Kalis - seem to agree.
Carlsbad (CA) La Costa Canyon offensive tackle Erik Magnuson started for the West Team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. The 6'6", 280 lb. future left tackle played all five positions during West Team practices this past week, but started the game at left guard and held up very well against the East. He looked a little uncomfortable in his stance, but he kept his feet moving well and made some impressive seal blocks in a game that defensive linemen usually dominate.
Farmington Hills (MI) Harrison defensive end Mario Ojemudia played defensive end for the East Team in the inaugural Semper Fi All-American Game. He did not get off the ball as well as I expected him to, but that may be because he was playing a new position. Despite being headed for DE or OLB at Michigan, he mostly played defensive tackle in high school. Without the ball right under his nose, he seemed to be a little slow off the snap. However, he was very good at using his hands to get off of blocks.
Kansas City (MO) Park Hill defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins didn't start the game, but was named a captain for the West Team in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. He was somewhat inconsistent with his pad level and seemed a little out of shape, which is understandable for a 330 lb. kid at the beginning of January. However, when he decided to hustle, he was very good. Pipkins chased down East quarterback Chad Voytik on the sideline and crushed him, and he also chased down wide receiving/running back Stefon Diggs and forced a fumble. Overall, the hype on Pipkins was justified and with a little conditioning, he should be at least backup material next season.
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech cornerback Terry Richardson played defense and also returned kickoffs and punts for the Black Team in the Under Armour All-America Game. Richardson showed good speed and decent elusiveness in returning a kickoff 32 yards and another 28 yards, but unfortunately he carries the ball a little loosely and fumbled the 28-yard return; his punt returns were iffy with one muff and one poor decision to catch the ball at the 6-yard line. He also showed the ability to hang with the nation's best receivers, although Richardson didn't have any big plays on defense. He was beaten for a touchdown in the third quarter, but had pretty good coverage and reached his hand across just a split second too late to deflect the pass. The 5'9", 165 lb. Richardson needs to get a little bit thicker, because he tends to get pushed around by some of the bigger receivers.
Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary's linebacker James Ross started for the West Team at weakside linebacker in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. Ross made 3 total tackles and flashed what I think is his biggest strength, which is diagnosing plays. If it's a run, he knows it's a run. If it's a pass, he knows it's a pass. Ross took some poor angles at times, which may be partly due to adjusting to faster competition. But he does have the speed to make those plays when he takes the proper angles, so I'm not too concerned there.
Overall, it was a very good showing for the Michigan players who participated in the all-star games, especially the guys in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. This looks to be the best crop of Army Bowl participants Michigan has snagged in years.
