2022 NFL Draft Results

The 2022 NFL Draft has wrapped, and here are the Michigan-related results:

Defensive end Aidan Hutchinson was taken in the 1st round (#2 overall) by the Detroit Lions.

Safety Daxton Hill was taken in the 1st round (#31 overall) by the AFC champion Cincinnati Bengals.

Outside linebacker David Ojabo was picked in the 2nd round (#45 overall) by John Harbaugh and the Baltimore Ravens. Ojabo would almost certainly have been a 1st round pick if not for a torn Achilles suffered at Michigan's pro day.

Running back Hassan Haskins was drafted in the 4th round (#131 overall) by the Tennessee Titans, where he will have a chance to run behind former Michigan offensive tackle Taylor Lewan.

Offensive tackle Andrew Stueber went to the New England Patriots in the 7th round (#245 overall), joining former Wolverine Michael Onwenu on the offensive line. Outside linebacker Joshua Uche and inside linebacker Cam McGrone are also with the Patriots.

Undrafted free agent signings include:

  • DT Chris Hinton to the New York Giants
  • DT Donovan Jeter to the Pittsburgh Steelers
  • LB Josh Ross to the Baltimore Ravens
  • DE Luiji Vilain, who transferred to Wake Forest, to the Minnesota Vikings

  1. Do any of these results surprise you? Disappoint you?

I'm a bit surprised by Stueber going so low. Otherwise, the rest of the results seem somewhat expected to me.

    1. Ummm...it surprises me that Chris Hinton left early? None of the draft results surprise me. In my draft preview, I was basically spot on except Haskins went 1 round earlier and Stueber went 1 round later than I thought. All the guys I thought would be undrafted went undrafted.

Stueber isn't that great of an athlete, so I expected him to go fairly late. I think he can stick around in the league for a while, but mostly as a backup or spot starter.

  2. So glad to see Hasskins end up in such an ideal situation. It would not surprise me to see him lead the league in rushing within the next couple years. The Titans seem committed to the run game and Haskins can slot in as the backup just as the Titans could be transitioning from Derrick Henry (28 and showing signs of wear).

Haskins was the 11th RB selected but I'm not sure he'd trade spots with any of those guys.

Otherwise, it was as expected aside from Hinton. Thunder correctly predicted he would go undrafted while most publications I saw had him in round 6. Hopefully some of our UDFAs get a chance to pop.

    1. Yep. When my son and I saw Tennessee pick HH, we were excited. Can't imagine a much better for in modern football for Haskins

  3. Notable - Aubrey Solomon has not gotten a UDFA invite yet. We were all stung by his transfer when the DL situation was bad in the 2018 offseason but it turned out he was just flat out not a good player. He never did much at Tennessee and ended up sinking down the depth chart there. Perhaps a case of motivation/lack of development or perhaps just bad recruiting rankings.

Regardless, Mattison's DT class that look so robust and promising turned out to be an almost total flop.
    Solomon
    Irving-Bey
    Hudson
    Malone Hatcher
    Paea
    Jeter

I bet this played into his defection to OSU.

    1. I have no doubt that you are technically correct. However, I think Jeter would have been better under Mattison, and I also think Hudson would have been a decent player if he stayed on defense at Michigan. There was potential there. But yeah, it was a big flop.

    2. Mattison's resume for developing DL is stellar. But I think it was obvious that 2019 was going to be a down year in personnel, and that was largely driven by the lackluster 2017 recruiting class. Mattison had failed to restock the interior DL.

This was the year that Gary, Winovich, Mone and Solomon left, Kemp played NT and they tried to play Ben Mason at DT, and most of us talked ourselves into believing that either Dwumfour or Jeter were critical players. It really took till 2021 to recover and reload.

I suspect Mattison didn't care to grind through a couple rough years at the back end of his career. I'm sure that wasn't all of it but it was probably a factor. I know folks put this on Brown, and that may be mostly true, somewhat true, or not at all true, but I don't think Mattison should get off without any responsibility. It's very possible that Mattison hit a wall with the 2017 class, saw the problems it was going to cause, and skipped out before performance fell off a cliff.

I wonder if Shaun Nua worried about a similar cliff with the departures of Hutchinson, Ojabo, Jeter, and Hinton.

    3. Most UDFA's don't get much more than an invite to camp but I hear that Hinton got 6 figures guaranteed from the Giants as multiple teams were trying to get him. Can't substantiate online. The guarantee reflects some level of commitment/investment from NYG. Granted - nothing like a 1st round pick - he'll get cut if he doesn't play well, but he's probably closer to a 7th round pick than most UDFAs.

The opportunity is real. The Giants have a roster need at DT, but also drafted a run-stuffer in Round 5. It's a pretty good spot for Hinton to be in, though I'm sure he would have rather have gotten drafted he knows the deal and the projections for him were always Day 3 at best. He is still going to be an uphill battle to make a roster but it's something a bit closer to being a preferred walk-on than a student body tryout.
