Way Too Early 2022 Depth Chart: April 2022

Donovan Edwards

The following depth chart has removed a variety of players due to graduation, departures for the NFL, and transfers. I have made some updates/changes based upon the spring game and chatter surrounding practices.

It also assumes that every currently rostered player and every signed prospect will be here in the fall of 2022, which is obviously not true.

Hit the jump for the depth chart.

  1. Depth chart hot takes:

QB: Orji sees more competitive snaps than Davis or Warren due to his role in run packages.

RB: Stokes is RB3 by October.

    WR: Bell is WR1.

OL: Barnhart starts at least 3 games.

DT: Jeter gets 3rd most snaps after Smith and Jenkins.

Edge: Harrell gets 2nd most snaps after Morris, ahead of Upshaw, McGregor, etc.

DL: Welshof plays a prominent role in the DL rotation, moves around a lot, and ends the season in the top 4 or 5 in DL snap count.

    LB: Mullings stays here.

Nickel: Moore and McBurrows get more snaps than Sainristil when they are healthy.

CB: Johnson eventually passes Green but the top 3 CBs rotate frequently.

Sainristil plays both ways, starts a few games at nickel, features prominently in special teams and becomes a fan favorite of sorts. However, he's outside the core DB rotation by OSU.

  2. If Davis Warren keeps improving he might pass JJ, Because, he looked better in his first play in Spring game than any QB I've seen in a Spring game in his first appearance.
If he keeps improving, he could be the starter next year, after McNamara leaves for the pros.
    But we'll see.

    1. I dunno... I don't think Davis Warren has a chance to pass McCarthy. His best bet is to wait until McCarthy graduates/moves on to the NFL. Well, maybe his best bet will be to transfer to a place where he has an easier path to playing time.
