  1. When you say "Michigan is currently under its scholarship limit by 1." do mean they are leaving scholarships unused? Why would that be?

Other places I've seen estimate somewhere between 85 and 90 though obviously anything above 85 is incorrect. (Perhaps they are on scholarships through other means.) This site's estimate was 90 earlier in the year and obviously there has been attrition since then (Newburg, Stewart, Morant, Henry) but I don't think it adds up to 84, especially with Okie being added late.

    1. I read somewhere that Okie is a Walk-on.

    2. Oh interesting! I hadn't heard that.

  2. I think there's seniors missing now who could be back (e.g., All, Sainristil) and then also some grad students (e.g., Welshof, Bell) that could be back. Majority of them will move on (e.g., Smith) but they technically have the option with the COVID stuff. Alan Bowman seemed old when he got here (because he was a grad transfer) but he came in with 3 years of eligibility left (2018 played, 2019 red-shirted due to injury, 2020 COVID) and Bell is in a similar boat (played in 18 and 19, COVID 20, RS 21). Erik All will also likely have a double dip option between COVID 2020 and RS 2022 so he could stick around through the end of the 2024 season if he wants.

All of this is just to say that this is damn near impossible to track right now and get it right. This list is neither IDing who COULD be back nor projecting who we can EXPECT to be back but both are kind of just guesses.

Another wrinkle is the the whole "scheduled to graduate" thing is increasingly irrelevant or incorrect if it references guys in their 4th year (e.g., Cade) with more and more people graduating after 3 years (e.g., Bowman).

So between red shirts, red-shirt appeals, COVID giving guys 5th and 6th year options who wouldn't have had them before (e.g., Honigford), unclear walk-on scholarship status (e.g., Kolesar), NFL departures rising in popularity (e.g., Hinton), standard grad transfers (e.g., McCaffrey), early graduation grad transfers (e.g, Milton), these roster projections are just too tang tough for my brain.

IMO there's maybe half the current roster that you can firmly mark as "expected to be back" - freshman, underclassmen on the depth chart and then then roughly the other half is "have a decision to make" - seniors and 5th year guys and then underclassmen who are buried or dealing with off field things. Once the COVID thing is out of the way (not till 2025 season) it'll get slightly easier to make projections but for now it's especially crazy.

  3. FWIW The mgoblog depth chart has 95 guys that could be on the roster next year when including the 13 recruiting commits. I think it's actually 97 because Bowman shows up as a senior eligible player even though he red-shirted and got a COVID year and thus has technically only played through 3 seasons of elibilty (18, 21, 22) and Okie isn't included either (another HS class of 2017 guy who can double dip and get to year 6).

    1. Considering Michigan is going to take probably another 5-10 commits and add a couple guys through the portal to fill gaps - the number of possible guys on the 2023 roster is going to get over 100 by December. Then you've got to look for probably 20 guys who will not be there.

Some will go to the NFL, some will transfer by choice, some will graduate like "normal" and not worry about red-shirts or COVID eligibility, some will get firm handshakes and thanks yous, and probably a small handful will get a frank conversation about the liklihood of playing time and then choose to transfer.

Interesting note that a couple guys who maybe could have been headed for the NFL (All and Jones) whose injuries may end up helping Michigan. Because of strong depth on the OL and TE Michigan seems, so far, to be able to handle those injuries and now could get those guys back in 2023 when that might not have been the case.

  4. No offense, Lank, but I'm well aware of all the permutations that could take place between now and then. This isn't an exercise in accuracy. It's just a snapshot.

    1. None taken and I know that you know. My point is that the snapshot is off by 10-20 if you are using the "scholarships allocated" approach. It's also off if guessing at who will be back - because it includes some guys who will almost certainly not be and excludes some who very likely will - which seems arbitrary.

Of course they will end up at 85, so technically it's very close to the total but the total total will always be 85.
