Way Too Early 2023 Depth Chart: October 2022

Erick All

The following depth chart has removed these listed players from the 2022 depth chart due to expiring eligibility, even though some could return with a fifth year or COVID year exception:

  • QB Alan Bowman (graduation)
  • WR Ronnie Bell (graduation)
  • WR Cornelius Johnson (graduation)
  • TE Erick All (graduation)
  • TE Joel Honigford (graduation)
  • TE Luke Schoonmaker (graduation)
  • OL Ryan Hayes (graduation)
  • OL Olu Oluwatimi (graduation)
  • DE Taylor Upshaw (graduation)
  • DT Julius Welschof (graduation)
  • LB Michael Barrett (graduation)
  • CB Gemon Green (graduation)
  • CB Mike Sainristil (graduation)
  • S German Green (graduation)
  • P Brad Robbins (graduation)

It also assumes that every currently rostered player and every currently committed prospect will be here in 2023, which is obviously not true.

  1. Cade McNamara will not be here next year. He may be going to Illinois. But he is definitely not going to be here next year.

    1. I do not expect McNamara to be on the roster next year, either, but I don't select guys on here to cancel out because of my expectations. If/when he does leave, I will remove him in the subsequent iteration of this post.

  2. Per the other post on this topic - it's not really evident why some guys who could return are assumed to "gradate" and others are not (e.g., Bowman and McNamara - who both already graduated).

The key issue is if somebody has used 4 years of eligibility (not including 2020). Honigford and Olu cannot come back because they have (2022, 2021, 2019, 2018). Technically OLU did not play in 2018 but since it was his second year of not playing it counts against him.

    1. Graduate not gradate LOL.

IMO the "best" way to do this exercise is to split up the roster into 3 categories - NEW, EXPECTED BACK and DECISIONS.

NEW is recruits, which is highly fluid until after signing day, plus incoming transfers, which is typically just a handful of guys but can happen at anytime between December and August, apparently.

EXPECTED BACK is current freshman (rising sophomores), current sophomores (rising juniors) and current juniors (who are not starters and thus not NFL candidates). I would NOT include junior starters like Corum, Zinter, Jenkins, Wilson, etc. Not after Hinton (average Big Ten starter) and Ojabo (zero to hero) left for the NFL.

DECISIONS are for junior starters (including red-shirt sophomore starters), and any form of senior (4th year senior, 4th year RS JR or 5th year grads who played in 2020). It's really the same thing from the Michigan perspective whether they are talking about NFL or grad transfer - they are all considering playing somewhere else.

You can add a bit of speculation to the decisions and say "likely back" and "likely not back" and you'll probably be right more often than not, but as we've learned with Robbins, Moody, and Honigford this stuff does not always go like you expect. Or in the case of NFL departures - Hinton and Gray.

When you talk about guys like Bell, Bowman, Okie, Upshaw, Sainristil, and All I think it's very hard to say one thing is likely and another is not unless the player is saying something on the subject. They usually do not until the season is over. Especially with NIL being a factor now. Fringe guys like Bell and Johnson might have a financial incentive to stick around, adding further to the uncertainty.

Red shirts don't matter now - except for the guys who could come back for a 6th year. With COVID in place everyone who played in 2020 gets a free year, so we won't really be clear of this uncertain situation all the way until 2025 when the 2020 freshman are in the last of their up-to-6 available years and the 2021 freshman are through their 5.

  3. Does Erick All have the option of returning if he wants to?

    1. Yes. Every 2019 freshman can return for a 5th year in 2023 because of COVID (2020). Same goes for 2020s (5th years in 2024).

Red-shirts are moot unless somebody wants to come back for year 6.

All has only two years that count against him for sure. 2019 (freshman year) and 2021 (junior year). 202 is COVID. So he can come back for 2023 without doing anything. If he wants to come back in 2024 he will need to apply for a red-shirt for 2022 but that bridge doesn't need to be crossed for another 15 months.

With COVID, the traditional framework of sorting eligibility by red-shirt designation (as done above) is irrelevant (for now). See the 3 seniors below:

Atteberry - senior/RS junior; could still have 2 years of eligibility
All - senior/true senior; could still have 2 years of eligibility
Sainristil - senior/true senior; could return in 2023 without red-shirting

It's also misleading because, for example, Honigford can NOT come back in 2023 while Schoonmacher can. In terms of eligibility, Schoonmacher is in the same exact boat as Sainristil not Honigford. They have 1 more year. Schoonmacher also has more in common with McNamara (also a current grad student who will face an offseason choice of staying at Michigan or moving on for a bigger role elsewhere).
