Jack Tuttle, Wolverine

Former Indiana (and Utah) quarterback Jack Tuttle committed to Michigan on Tuesday as a sixth year transfer. He joined former Indiana tight end A.J. Barner in picking the Wolverines, coming in as a package deal.

Tuttle was listed at 6'4" and 210 lbs. last year for the Hoosiers. He was the backup for the Hoosiers behind Connor Bazelak, and in his one game against Penn State, he went 9/12 for 75 yards and 1 touchdown before a shoulder sidelined him for the rest of the year. As a redshirt junior in 2021, he went 45/87 for 423 yards, 2 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. Altogether, he has completed 57.1% of his passes for 901 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 6 picks in his career.

Tuttle enrolled early at Utah in 2018, but it didn't work out there and he transferred to Indiana, where he has spent the past four seasons. He has been perched as a backup for a few seasons behind the likes of Michael Penix and Bazelak; the former makes sense, but the latter is kind of questionable. Regardless, Tuttle has had a pretty forgettable career in the grand scheme of things.

On the plus side, I actually kind of like Tuttle as a player. He has good mechanics and decent athleticism. There are no glaring issues from a physical perspective - he's solidly built, can run a little bit, and has a decent arm. The issue with him has generally been with his accuracy and decision making. But he's reportedly a high quality individual, and if he's coming to Michigan with the kind of season J.J. McCarthy just had (or is having), Tuttle knows he's coming in as a #2 at best.

On Michigan's end, they lost Cade McNamara to Iowa and Alan Bowman to the transfer portal, leaving starter J.J. McCarthy, walk-on David Warren, and a couple of unproven 2022 signees in Jayden Denegal and Alex Orji. Warren has done fine in backup duty, but without signing a player in the class of 2023, it was necessary to add a little bit of depth for wiggle room purposes. Tuttle might not be able to come in and carry on success like McCarthy did taking over for McNamara, but he could potentially come in and just . . . not screw things up, which would be good.

Here's a look at the potential depth chart for 2023:

  • J.J. McCarthy (Jr.)
  • Jack Tuttle (6th)
  • Davis Warren (RS So.)
  • Alex Orji (So.)
  • Jayden Denegal (RS Fr.)

  2. Assuming Tuttle just steps into Bowman's spot but you never know.

It'll be interesting to hear what insider buzz there is between Orji, Denegal, and Bell developing behind the vets.
