The German skier experiment -- Julius Welschof -- comes to an end. When he came in I was interested to see how he would do. He played on special teams, but that project just wasn't to be.
ReplyDeleteQB Davis Warren as #3 behind transfer-in Jack Tuttle ... maybe, but I really do wonder about Warren. Is he some kind of "there's more there than people think" type of player?
I don't like "experiment" players. I think there is no time for it. Alabama just signed six 5 Star players and a semi load of 4 Stars. I want National Championships. There's a clear, and easy to see reason why Alabama is the best program in college for about 15 years. I have no desire to follow the progress of an experiment. I want a dynasty. I thought from the beginning getting some unknown, unrated player from Germany was a bad idea. Where was Jim Harbaugh's head at that time. All the while Nick Saban is going after 5 Stars.

DeleteThat Harbaugh has made back to back playoffs - unique company - is a testament to his coaching acumen. I've criticized him as well, but mostly for the inconsistency in identity on offense (pre-21). The "experiments" include guys like Uche & Ojabo, who are not something to complain about

"Just be Alabama" is easier said than done. We can try to recruit a bunch of 5 stars but we're not likely to be as successful as the biggest dogs, for a multitude of reasons. Not like we haven't been trying.
DeleteThe big change is money so maybe you can argue that's a window for us but even some of the blue-bloods are getting outbid by some ambitious programs willing to take risks (i.e., spend irresponsibly).
I'd argue that's a foolish approach and a school like Michigan is wise to focus their attentions elsewhere. Yeah - we still want to get SOME blue chip recruits as we've done, but there's a lot more bang-for-buck with NIL money going to transfers that are far less risky. It should be the type of kid like Will Johnson with some connection to the program not a guy going to the highest bidder.
I'm in the camp that wants more Welshof's and Ojabo's and Bell's. Those guys high ceiling/low floor prospects are more attractive than ever because you know if they bust you can back-fill through the Portal.
With the portal as a good way to add high end talent (like Olu, Stewart, Okie, etc) you can use HS recruiting a little differently - to focus on development project lottery-tickets at key positions like Edge and OT - or high character/high intelligence program guys who want to be at Michigan for 4 years.
I look at it this way - if Michigan needs a new QB in 2024 they are better off using their NIL dollars on proven QB than a high school QB.

I know there's rumors, but Corum would be financially foolish to return. I don't think you'll see a 1A/1B punch like we've had the last couple years. Edwards will be the clear #1 a la senior year Higdon. Mullings could be a short-yardage pounder or THUNDER complement but I think the backup duties will be a competition in camp. Unless/until we get someone from the Portal (which I still expect). I'll give the edge to the freshman over Stokes and Dunlap. I've not given up on Stokes yet but he didn't do enough to instill a lot of confidence in a big role in 2023.
WR: Wilson, Anthony, Clemons, Walker, Henning, Morris, Morgan, English, Moore, Dennis, Dixon
I think we should see a leap from Clemons and Walker that may push Wilson to more inside receiver. Both played a good bit as freshman despite plenty of depth.
TE: Loveland, Barner, Bredeson, Hibner, Klein, Marshall, Tonielli
I think Bredeson will still play a huge role but Loveland/Barner will be a 1A/1B situation. Honigford may be replaced largely by more 6OL packages.
OT: Barnhart, Jones, Hinton, Persi, Gentry, Bounds, Link
OG: Henderson, El-Hadi, Atteberry, Jones, Lorenzetti, Giudice, Efobi, Herring
C: Nugent, Crippen, Anderson
I assume Zinter and Keegan are off to the NFL. Even with that, this is the most likely position group for transfer attrition after the season is over.

Assume that Morris is off to the NFL and many of the OLB types will play Edge just like Ojabo/Harrell. McGregor and Harrell should have the advantage for starting spots but Stewart and Moore should play huge roles as well. Lots of young guys in the edge pipeline which is a bit like OL now - patience warranted.
DT: Jenkins, Graham, Grant, Benny, Iwunnah, Etta, Pierce, Bahr
I think Smith is off to the NFL. I don't see an abundance of depth here if Smith, Goode, Welshoff and Rooks are all gone.
ILB: Colson, Hausmann, Rolder, Hill-Green, Velazquez, Hood, Spurlock, Bridgeman
Barrett like Sainristil isn't necessarily a big NFL risk so could be back. I didn't include him here, nor did I include, Mullings (moved to RB). Way too many guys for 2 spots that don't need to rotate.
CB: Johnson, Sainristi, McBurrows, Perry, Pollard, Jones, Hill, Calhoun
I have Turner to the NFL and the Green brothers gone but it would be nice to get any of them back. Guessing we get more movement over from safety and additions from portal. Weakest spot on the roster by far.
