A History of #1 Center Recruits

In past years, I have done examinations of the various positions at which Michigan has pulled in the #1 recruit. So you can find pieces on the #1 running back (LINK), the #1 cornerback (LINK), and the #1 overall recruits (LINK). Below you'll find a bevy of household names for the sexiest position in football: offensive center.

2000: Jason Respert - C - Warner Robins (GA) Northside
Respert was a backup guard at Tennessee as a freshman and then earned the starting center job in 2001, only to have a season-ending ankle injury after three games. He would go on to start seven games at guard during the 2002-2003 seasons before being named a captain in 2004. I can't find any evidence of him playing in the NFL, and the latest news I can find is that he was coaching high school football in his home state.

2001: Ben Wilkerson - C - Hemphill (TX) Hemphill
Wilkerson started immediately as a freshman at LSU in 2001. He was First Team All-SEC in 2003 and 2004, and he was the co-recipient of the Rimington Trophy (along with Michigan's David Baas) in 2004. He went undrafted in 2005 and then played in 32 total games with the Cincinnati Bengals and Atlanta Falcons from 2005-2008. Since then he has been coaching, most recently as an assistant offensive line coach with the Chicago Bears.

2002: Bobby Morton - C - McKinney (TX) McKinney
Morton redshirted for Notre Dame in 2002 and then became the full-time starting center in 2003. He moved to left guard and started in 2004 and then started four games at center in 2005, playing a backup role the rest of his redshirt junior season. He bounced back and forth between center and guard as a fifth year senior in 2006. He was not picked in the 2007 NFL Draft and I can't find any record of him playing in the NFL.

2015 Season Countdown: #29 Patrick Kugler

Last year: I ranked Kugler #75 and said he would be a backup center. He played in one game.

Kugler has not lived up to the expectations some people had for him coming out of high school. A highly ranked player, the son of an NFL offensive line coach (and now the head coach at UTEP), Kugler was expected to compete for playing time very early on an offensive line that was not very productive. Some thought he would play as a true freshman or beat out Jack Miller as a redshirt freshman. Instead, he has never been higher than the third-string guy, and the one game he played last season was when part-time center Graham Glasgow was suspended.

Whether we like it or not, Kugler is a key backup this season. The Wolverines have not done a great job of recruiting the center position in recent years. It's perhaps the most important position on the offensive line, so it's dangerous to ignore. The danger level rose a bit this offseason when Jack Miller, who would have been a fifth year senior in 2015, chose to leave the program. He had been the starter for all of 2014 and part of 2013, and he had been a solid contributor. In steps Glasgow, who played center quite a bit in 2013 but spent most of his time at left guard last year. Glasgow ran into some more legal trouble this offseason, and I don't know if he can be counted on to be available for an entire season. The coaching staff tried left tackle Mason Cole at center this spring, but his snaps were very inconsistent. Backup interior lineman Blake Bars has also snapped the ball a little bit, but he can get overpowered and does not maintain leverage well. If anything happens to Glasgow, the easiest thing will be to insert Kugler, but he has a lot to prove.

2014 Season Countdown: #75 Patrick Kugler

Position: Center
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number: #57
Last year: I ranked Kugler #87 and said he would redshirt. He redshirted.

Kugler had surgery to repair his injured shoulder between his senior year of high school and his freshman year of college, so his rehab impaired his ability to contribute last season. Even so, a true freshman playing offensive line in college is somewhat rare, let alone at center. Kugler was a full go for the latter part of the season in practice, and he seemed none the worse for wear during the spring game.

Kugler enters the 2014 season as the third center on the roster. Redshirt junior Graham Glasgow leads the way, followed by redshirt junior Jack Miller, who started the first few games last year before being passed by Glasgow. So there's a fair amount of experience ahead of the redshirt freshman. Despite being listed at 295 lbs., Kugler looked pretty thin this spring and could afford to add some mass before he hits the field in the regular season. I think he will eventually take over the position and could even help out at guard in the meantime, but that's probably still a year or two away.

Prediction: Backup center

Graham Glasgow did something bad

Redshirt junior offensive lineman Graham Glasgow, who started all 13 games in 2013, failed to meet "team expectations" and has been suspended for spring football and the season opener against Appalachian State. This is unfortunate for Glasgow himself, but also for the team, since he appeared to be the one sure starter on an offensive line in flux. During the spring up until this point, Glasgow had been playing center, guard, and tackle, and he would almost certainly have started at either center or guard in the fall.

The other options at center are these:

• Redshirt freshman Patrick Kugler: The 6'5", 295 lb. son of a former NFL offensive line coach (and current college head coach), Kugler was born and bred to be a lineman. Unfortunately, he's young and coming off shoulder surgery. 
• Redshirt junior Jack Miller: At 6'4" and 297 lbs., Miller technically has the size to be an effective center, but he got blown off the ball too often last year when he began the year as Michigan's starting center. He was sent to the bench by Glasgow, never to return, even when Glasgow had serious issues snapping the ball in his first few weeks. Miller has also been playing some left guard this spring.
• Redshirt senior Joe Burzynski: The 6'1", 288 lb. Burzynski is a little undersized and has never played regularly at the college level after walking on to the program a few years ago. He has mostly been a backup guard and got a brief chance to play significant time last year before tearing his ACL against Indiana. He has still not returned to full practices and may not be a full go until August.
• Redshirt sophomore Blake Bars: The 6'5", 290 lb. Bars has been practicing at tackle quite a bit this spring with the depth so poor at that position, but he has been a guard for most of his time on campus. He has snapped the ball a little bit during his time in Ann Arbor, but this would be sort of an emergency move.
• Sophomore Kyle Bosch: In what would be another desperation move, Bosch came to Michigan prepared to play some center if necessary. The 6'5", 301 lb. Bosch has not practiced at center at all (as far as I know) and is likely to start or at least push for a starting job at guard.

If I had to make a guess right now, I would tentatively say that I expect Kugler to be the starter against Appalachian State. Miller has already had a chance to show what he can do, and we've seen that he has struggled. The more important point there is that the coaches did not give him another chance to get on the field, which suggests to me that they were very unhappy with what they saw.

2013 Season Countdown: #87 Patrick Kugler

Last year: Kugler was a senior in high school. I gave him a TTB Rating of 86.

The son of an NFL offensive line coach (who has since been hired as UTEP's head coach), Kugler committed to Michigan in February 2012.  His high school team went on to an undefeated season and a Pennsylvania state championship, while Kugler himself was selected for the Under Armour All-America Game, where he won the starting center job.

Kugler is perhaps the most college ready center to come to Michigan in the last 20 years, partly due to good size and partly due to his bloodlines and technique.  However, I'm not sure that I've ever seen a true freshman center in major college football, since that position typically requires the experience and intelligence to call protections.  The Wolverines have a couple options who are older and a little bigger, though perhaps not as talented in the long run.  I expect Kugler to spend this season on the bench.

Wexford (PA) North Allegheny center Patrick Kugler

Patrick Kugler: 63%
The freshman from Wexford (PA) North Allegheny played in the Under Armour All-American Game.  According to the 247 Composite rankings, he's a 4-star, the #68 player nationally, and the country's top center.  He will enroll at Michigan in June and potentially be a backup to whoever wins the starting center job this spring.  His father is a former professional offensive line coach who is now UTEP's head football coach.

Kyle Bosch: 19%
Bosch is a 6'5", 307 lb. player who enrolled in January.  He attended Wheaton (IL) St. Francis and was 247 Composite's #3 offensive guard and #87 overall prospect.  In spring practice videos, he has appeared to be running with the second team at offensive guard.  He may factor into the playing rotation in the fall.

David Dawson: 12%
The Detroit (MI) Cass Tech prospect stands 6'4" and 280 lbs.  He's the 247 Composite's #4 offensive guard - one spot below Bosch - and their #95 player overall.  Dawson also played in the Under Armour All-American Game.

Chris Fox and Logan Tuley-Tillman: 1% (tie)
Fox comes from Parker (CO) Ponderosa, while Tuley-Tillman hails from Peoria (IL) Manual; they were selected for the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and the Under Armour game, respectively, although Fox was unable to participate due to a knee injury.  Fox stands 6'6" and 300 lbs. and was recruited to play tackle, while Tuley-Tillman enrolled in January and has been practicing at left offensive tackle, standing 6'7" and 285 lbs.  Fox was 247 Composite's #5 offensive guard and #111 overall player, and Tuley-Tillman was the #12 offensive tackle and #167 player overall.

Dan Samuelson: 0%
Plymouth (IN) Plymouth offensive guard Samuelson stands 6'5" and 290 lbs.  According to the 247 Composite rankings, he's the #21 offensive guard and #414 overall player in the nation.

Derrick Green - RB - Richmond (VA) Hermitage: 92 95
The more I think about the offensive line Michigan is building, the more I think Green is going to have a very good career in a winged helmet.  He could very well be the starter by his sophomore year, if not as a freshman.

Dymonte Thomas - S - Alliance (OH) Marlington: 92 89
I'm downgrading Thomas because I don't know that he's an All-American candidate, which is what a 90+ grade entails.  I think he will still be a very good player and turn into an all-conference player as a strong safety.

Kyle Bosch - OG - Wheaton (IL) St. Francis: 88
I'm going to leave Bosch right where he is.  He looks like an excellent guard prospect, and I like his nastiness.

Shane Morris - QB - Warren (MI) De La Salle: 89 87
Morris still has all the physical schools he has ever had - strong arm, decent athleticism - and has shown with his recruiting that he has some leadership skills.  It just seems like he has some limitations on seeing the whole field and making good decisions.

Patrick Kugler - C - Wexford (PA) North Allegheny: 83 86
With a couple years between Jack Miller and Kugler, the latter should have at least a couple seasons as a starter.  I liked what I saw of him at the Under Armour All-American Game.


Chris Fox - OT - Parker (CO) Ponderosa: 90 85
Fox's ACL tear concerns me some. He's still a big body who's pretty athletic, but I fear that this injury might put him behind some of the other linemen to begin..

Jourdan Lewis - CB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: 86 84
Lewis isn't the biggest, strongest, or fastest recruit out there, but he shows good change of direction and ball skills.  I like him as a college cornerback, but he might be limited beyond that.

Jake Butt - TE - Pickerington (OH) North: 82
I'm leaving Butt right where he is. He's not a "next generation" tight end who can run really fast and jump really high, but he's a very solid prospect.  He should have no problem turning into a good blocker at the very least.

Ben Gedeon - LB - Hudson (OH) Hudson: 82 81
I still like Gedeon, but I have slightly more confidence in Butt as a prospect.  I like turning running backs into linebackers, and he has experience at both positions.

Da'Mario Jones - WR - Westland (MI) John Glenn: 79 81
As Michigan's passing offense improves and they can find more ways to get the ball to receivers, I like Jones's skill set more.  He's not an absolute blazer, but he offers a dimension of speed that some other recent receiver recruits lack.

Henry Poggi - DT - Baltimore (MI) Gilman: 81 79
Watching Poggi in the Under Armour All-American Game, I still think Poggi looks like a good prospect for the college level - he played very well - but I'm not sure he'll have the size or explosion to be a serious NFL prospect down the road.

Maurice Hurst, Jr. - DT - Westwood (MA) Xaverian Brothers: 73 78
I always liked Hurst's athleticism, but I like his energy, too.  After seeing his senior highlights and his performance in the Semper Fi All-American Bowl, I think he has some potential to be a pretty good player down the road.

Csont'e York - WR - Harper Woods (MI) Chandler Park Academy: 79 77
York's rating doesn't change much, but I have less confidence in him than Poggi.  He still has considerable upside because he can go up and get the ball, but he's not a dynamic athlete.

Taco Charlton - DE - Pickerington (OH) Central: 75 76
Charlton has the speed to stick at weakside end, but he keeps growing and growing. I wonder if at some point he might be too heavy to play WDE and end up as a strongside end. Considering some lacking technique, that could be troublesome.

Logan Tuley-Tillman - OT - Peoria (IL) Manual: 79 75
I'm downgrading Tuley-Tillman a little bit because he's so raw.  He's helped by the fact that he's the only left tackle prospect in this class, but it's tough to get a feel for him.  Pass protection is still a huge issue for him as he learns.

Mike McCray II - LB - Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison: 74
This seems to be a pretty good spot for McCray. It's unclear whether he'll finally end up at SAM or MIKE. He's a good athlete, but I have questions about his ability to read plays quickly.  I might be in favor of putting him at SAM, where he would be in a position to attack more often than having to read and react.

Channing Stribling - CB - Matthews (NC) Butler: 73
I thought about bumping up Stribling, but I just don't think I can do it.  He showed his ability to make plays in high school, but I just don't think he has the speed to be a dynamic player in college.  Most of Michigan's good corners over the past 15 years or so have been fast or at least quick, but I don't see that in Stribling.

David Dawson - OG - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: 67 71
I'm bumping Dawson up a little bit, because I think he could be a starter later in his career.  Anyone who becomes a starter with the way Michigan is recruiting has to be pretty good player, but I don't see a particularly high ceiling for him.

Delano Hill - CB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: 71 69
Hill has lots of physical talent, but if he were a great playmaker, he would have been rated higher by the recruiting services.  He seems to be a guy who could be a very good special teamer and earn spot duty in college, but he's a man without a position - is he a corner or a safety? - and there's talent at those spots already.

Wyatt Shallman - RB - Novi (MI) Catholic Central: 65
I think this is a pretty good spot for Shallman.  I don't think he will ever be a starter at running back, although he could be a factor at fullback or U-back in the future.  He also has the ability to contribute on defense, but Shallman and the coaches have been insistent that he'll play offense.

Ross Douglas - CB - Avon (OH) Avon: 63
Douglas was recruited to play slot corner, and when you combine that with his lack of great size, I think he's somewhat limited when projecting him beyond college.  I think he could be a solid slot corner in the same vein as Brandon Harrison.

DeVeon Smith - RB - Warren (OH) Howland: 63
I thought about bumping Smith up because I truly believe that Michigan will be putting together some good rushing seasons in the coming years because of the offensive line, and not totally because of the talent of the running backs.  I do not believe Smith has the speed to be a dynamic running back himself, but he might put up good numbers as a backup and perhaps eventual successor to Green.

Reon Dawson - CB - Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison: 62
Dawson does have some potential to outperform this ranking, but he's behind some of the other guys in technical prowess.  The speed and size are there.  It just depends on how it all comes together.

Khalid Hill - TE - Detroit (MI) East English Village: 68 60
Hill can fill a role on this team, but he has talent ahead of him and his lack of speed or size sort of limits his upside.

Dan Samuelson - OG - Plymouth (IN) Plymouth: 65 59
I think Samuelson will be a quality backup down the road, who could make a spot start and be fine.  However, I think he's someone who might get lost in the shuffle with the rest of the linemen Michigan is getting.

Jaron Dukes - WR - Columbus (OH) Marion Franklin: 70 58
Dukes didn't have a great senior season, and I already had questions about him going into the 2012 season.  He doesn't have great speed, and he doesn't look like a lithe athlete who can make up for that speed deficiency with acrobatics.

Scott Sypniewski - LS - Ottawa (IL) : Incomplete
I don't know enough about long snappers around the country to offer an opinion here.

Reon Dawson - CB - Trotwood (OH) Trotwood-Madison: Dawson is a 6'2", 175 lb. cornerback who committed to Illinois back in May.  When former Michigan commit Gareon Conley started wavering, the Wolverines offered Dawson, who is the teammate of Michigan linebacker commit Mike McCray II.  I have seen suggestions that Dawson is likely to stay committed to the Illini, but getting him on campus again could always make a difference.  This is his official visit. (Highlights.)

Delano Hill - CB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Hill committed to Michigan in December after an unofficial visit to the campus.  This is his official visit.

Cameron Hunt - OG - Corona (CA) Centennial: Here's a scouting report I wrote up on Hunt back in November.  He played in the Under Armour All-America Game on Friday night and earned positive reviews for his technique, but he's still pretty thin and probably a couple years away from being bulky enough to play at the college level.  There have been some rumblings from 2013 commits that it's just a matter of time until Hunt commits to Michigan, and he reportedly hung out with the Michigan-bound guys during the week.  I would not be surprised if he commits over the weekend.  This is his official visit.

Patrick Kugler - C - Wexford (PA) North Allegheny: Kugler committed to Michigan back in February and participated in the Under Armour All-America Game last weekend.  He was originally scheduled to take his official visit on January 18, but he reportedly wants to be in town at the same time as Hunt, with whom Kugler bonded at the Under Armour game.  This is his official visit.

J.J. McGrath - K - Macomb (MI) Lutheran North: McGrath is a 6'3", 228 lb. kicker with a lone offer from Air Force.  As a senior in 2012, he was 8/11 on field goals with makes from 57, 54, 53, 50, and 49 yards.  He also averaged 43.8 yards per punt.  Michigan already has three kickers on scholarship, but two will be seniors and the third will be a junior in 2013; there's also a chance that senior punter Will Hagerup has worn out his welcome after being suspended three times throughout his career.  McGrath also visited in September for the game against Air Force. Dan Samuelson - OG - Plymouth (IN) Plymouth: Samuelson is a 6'5", 290 lb. offensive guard prospect who is currently committed to Nebraska.  He was also previously committed to Pitt and holds offers from Illinois and Minnesota.  Samuelson visited Michigan on their huge recruiting weekend of December 15, and he has already stated that he plans to announce his "decision" of whether to flip to Michigan or remain committed to the Cornhuskers on Monday, January 14.  In my opinion, Hunt is the superior prospect and if Michigan plans to take just one more lineman, I would hope Hunt commits before Samuelson. Under Armour All-America Game analysis

Shane Morris did not perform well in the Under Armour All-America Game but the potential is there for a good future

David Dawson, OG: Dawson wore #55 and started at right guard.  He earned a reputation as a nasty run blocker during the week, but it's tough to run the ball in these games because running the ball is largely about repetition, timing, and teamwork.  Part of his pass blocking technique is to lean on people without moving his feet, which will have to be fixed before he can set foot on the field in college.  The fact that he earned a starting spot speaks well for his talent, but he wasn't a standout.

Patrick Kugler, OG: Kugler wore #57, started at left guard, and also was named a team captain.  He looked good when pulling and also seemed to be the best pass protector of the three future Wolverine offensive linemen in this game.  There was an ugly busted blocking assignment that allowed a sack, but it looked like Kugler was expecting a double-team that his linemate ignored.

Shane Morris, QB: Morris wore #12 and was the #2 quarterback.  He showed a strong arm - perhaps the strongest in the game - but he made some inaccurate throws and bad decisions.  He threw one pass into the arms of Vonn Bell that should have been picked off and returned for a touchdown, and later he got suckered into throwing a corner route against Cover 2 when Vernon Hargreaves III was sinking back in coverage; the throw to the flat was open and could have been completed.  However, Morris did have one of the better throws of the game on a fade route to LaQuon Treadwell in the endzone that should have been caught, but Treadwell allowed Hargreaves to rake it out at the last second.  Morris showed a little bit of mobility in getting out of the pocket, and he's quick enough to be effective on rollouts, but he'll never be a significant threat as a runner and took a highlight-reel shot in the open field from Oregon-bound linebacker Matthew Thomas.  Overall, he finished 2/10 passing for 23 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception.  He also carried the ball 2 times for 1 yard.

Henry Poggi, DT: Poggi wore #17 and started at defensive tackle.  He showed some quickness early in the game, pressuring PSU-bound Christian Hackenberg into an early checkdown, and grabbed a fumble recovery on a botched shotgun snap.  He also has very active hands and doesn't allow himself to stay blocked.  Poggi is still pretty thin for a defensive tackle, and I doubt he can put on 30-ish pounds of good weight in the next eight months to contribute this season.  Overall, he and Kugler had the best performances of the group.  Poggi finished with 1 tackle, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 quarterback hurries.

Logan Tuley-Tillman, OT: Tuley-Tillman wore #72 and was a backup offensive tackle.  He did okay in pass protection at times, but he generally stands too high and is susceptible to the bull rush.  Then when he gets ready for the bull rush, defensive ends can run around him.  He needs to adjust quicker.  There was one screen play called to the left where he let his guy run right past him untouched, which forced the quarterback into a hurried throw and an interception (that should have been a pick six).  However, when he chooses to do so, he moves his feet well and his wingspan allows him to keep defenders out of his body.

Shane Morris averages out to be the #16 recruit in the country

247 Sports  did a novel thing recently by figuring out a way to post "composite rankings," which combine the four major recruiting sites' rankings into an average for each player.  They claim it's "revolutionary," but it's kind of something I've always wanted to see . . . but who has the time or resources to do something like that?  Well . . . they do, I guess.
