2015 Season Countdown: #56 David Dawson

David Dawson (image via Scout)
Name: David Dawson
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 309 lbs.
High school: Detroit (MI) Cass Tech
Position: Offensive guard
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number: #55
Last year: I ranked Dawson #53 and said he would be a backup offensive guard. He played in five games.

Dawson redshirted in 2013 when he was 280 lbs., but he bulked up to 295 last season and became a backup. He made his debut in the Appalachian State blowout, and played in four more games afterward. The Wolverines stayed relatively healthy last season, so he was not needed often.

This year not much changes ahead of him, so he probably won't be called upon unless bad things happen to the knees and ankles of the starters or a couple key backups. Dawson has practiced at various times at both guard and both tackle spots. At a good size of 309 lbs., he seems like the first guard likely to draw into the lineup, but redshirt junior Blake Bars is an option, as is redshirt sophomore center/guard Patrick Kugler. Dawson did not fare particularly well in the spring game and was abused a few times by defensive tackle Maurice Hurst, Jr., so I don't think Dawson is quite ready for prime time yet. The way things look right now, he may have to wait for redshirt juniors Kyle Kalis, Ben Braden, and Erik Magnuson to graduate before he gets a shot to start.

Prediction: Backup offensive guard

2014 Season Countdown: #53 David Dawson

David Dawson (#55) - image via AnnArbor.com
Name: David Dawson
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 295 lbs.
High school: Detroit (MI) Cass Tech
Position: Offensive guard
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number: #55
Last year: I ranked Dawson #91 and said he would redshirt. He redshirted.

Dawson spent the 2013 season on the sideline, where most people expected him to stand. He came in a little undersized at 280 lbs., and some of it appeared to be bad weight. Michigan had a revolving door at the guard positions, but Dawson's classmate, Kyle Bosch, was the most college ready lineman in the class and started a couple games because of it.

Now Dawson is up to 295 lbs., and while most of the main contenders for the interior positions remain (Chris Bryant's career ended due to injury), they will spread out a little bit with the graduations of tackles Taylor Lewan and Michael Schofield. The semi-permanent starter at left guard, Erik Magnuson, bumps out to left tackle, and starting center/guard Graham Glasgow could also play right tackle if a viable center candidate arises out of the Jack Miller/Patrick Kugler combination. Dawson does not appear to be in contention to start this year, but he may draw into the lineup if there are injuries. He played left tackle and left guard in the spring when Magnuson was out with a shoulder injury, but freshman Mason Cole started the spring game at left tackle. I rank Dawson slightly ahead of Cole because Dawson has a year of experience, a little more size, and the coaches may want to preserve Cole's redshirt if they can. Based on Dawson's play in the spring game, he's still a work in progress. Michigan can't afford to suffer any long-term injuries on the offensive line.

Prediction: Backup offensive guard/tackle

2013 Season Countdown: #91 David Dawson

David Dawson
Name: David Dawson
Height: 6'4"
Weight: 280 lbs.
Position: Offensive guard
High school: Detroit (MI) Cass Tech
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: #55
Last year: Dawson was a senior in high school. I gave him a TTB Rating of 71.

Dawson's recruitment was probably the most dramatic of Michigan's class of 2013. For a little while, some Michigan fans were wringing their hands because the Wolverines hadn't offered the Cass Tech lineman with some significant BCS offers. When the offer finally came, Dawson committed in February 2012. Then he spent the summer months entertaining trips elsewhere, which is a no-no to Michigan's staff. A trip to Florida seemed to seal Dawson's departure from the class . . . but then he re-committed to the Wolverines in December. "The Policy" became "The Policy?" and now nobody knows how Brady Hoke and Co. will handle future recruits who want to visit elsewhere.

On the field, Dawson had enough success to be ESPN's top-ranked guard and participate in the Under Armour All-America Game. He played tackle in high school but looks like a college offensive guard. There's not a whole lot of experience at the interior positions, but there is a little bit of depth.  Like most freshman offensive linemen, Dawson is expected to bide his time until at least 2014.

Prediction: Redshirt

Under Armour All-America Game analysis

Shane Morris did not perform well in the Under Armour All-America Game but the potential is there for a good future
David Dawson, OG: Dawson wore #55 and started at right guard.  He earned a reputation as a nasty run blocker during the week, but it's tough to run the ball in these games because running the ball is largely about repetition, timing, and teamwork.  Part of his pass blocking technique is to lean on people without moving his feet, which will have to be fixed before he can set foot on the field in college.  The fact that he earned a starting spot speaks well for his talent, but he wasn't a standout.

Patrick Kugler, OG: Kugler wore #57, started at left guard, and also was named a team captain.  He looked good when pulling and also seemed to be the best pass protector of the three future Wolverine offensive linemen in this game.  There was an ugly busted blocking assignment that allowed a sack, but it looked like Kugler was expecting a double-team that his linemate ignored.

Shane Morris, QB: Morris wore #12 and was the #2 quarterback.  He showed a strong arm - perhaps the strongest in the game - but he made some inaccurate throws and bad decisions.  He threw one pass into the arms of Vonn Bell that should have been picked off and returned for a touchdown, and later he got suckered into throwing a corner route against Cover 2 when Vernon Hargreaves III was sinking back in coverage; the throw to the flat was open and could have been completed.  However, Morris did have one of the better throws of the game on a fade route to LaQuon Treadwell in the endzone that should have been caught, but Treadwell allowed Hargreaves to rake it out at the last second.  Morris showed a little bit of mobility in getting out of the pocket, and he's quick enough to be effective on rollouts, but he'll never be a significant threat as a runner and took a highlight-reel shot in the open field from Oregon-bound linebacker Matthew Thomas.  Overall, he finished 2/10 passing for 23 yards, 0 touchdowns, and 1 interception.  He also carried the ball 2 times for 1 yard.

Henry Poggi, DT:
Poggi wore #17 and started at defensive tackle.  He showed some quickness early in the game, pressuring PSU-bound Christian Hackenberg into an early checkdown, and grabbed a fumble recovery on a botched shotgun snap.  He also has very active hands and doesn't allow himself to stay blocked.  Poggi is still pretty thin for a defensive tackle, and I doubt he can put on 30-ish pounds of good weight in the next eight months to contribute this season.  Overall, he and Kugler had the best performances of the group.  Poggi finished with 1 tackle, 1 fumble recovery, and 2 quarterback hurries.

Logan Tuley-Tillman, OT: Tuley-Tillman wore #72 and was a backup offensive tackle.  He did okay in pass protection at times, but he generally stands too high and is susceptible to the bull rush.  Then when he gets ready for the bull rush, defensive ends can run around him.  He needs to adjust quicker.  There was one screen play called to the left where he let his guy run right past him untouched, which forced the quarterback into a hurried throw and an interception (that should have been a pick six).  However, when he chooses to do so, he moves his feet well and his wingspan allows him to keep defenders out of his body.

Here's a boxscore for the game.

Recruiting Update: December 17, 2012

Westerville (OH) South safety/linebacker/receiver/quarterback Marcus Ball (image via This Week News)
COMMITMENTS
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard David Dawson re-committed to Michigan.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech cornerback/safety Delano Hill changed his commitment from Iowa to Michigan.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2013
Westerville (OH) South linebacker Marcus Ball was offered by Michigan.  Ball is a 6'3", 205 lb. prospect who is being recruited by Michigan as a linebacker, though most other schools have told him they want him as a safety.  Back in November he committed to Wisconsin, where his brother Ray is an offensive tackle (and was recruited by Michigan a couple years ago).  He also has offers from Arizona State, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Penn State, West Virginia, and others.  As a junior in 2011, he threw for 1,300 yards, ran for 500 yards, and had 7 interceptions on defense.  He played safety in high school but appears to be a SAM linebacker prospect, and no matter where he ends up playing, I think he would outgrow the safety position. (Highlights.)

Spotsylvania (VA) Chancellor cornerback Chris Holmes was offered by Michigan.  He's a 6'2", 187 lb. prospect who could play boundary corner or safety.  Holmes committed to North Carolina State back in July and holds offers from Clemson, Illinois, South Carolina, and West Virginia.  The Wolfpack just replaced head coach Tom O'Brien with former Northern Illinois coach Dave Doeren, so there might be an opening to create a relationship. (Highlights.)

Brantford (Ont.) Pauline Johnson offensive tackle David Knevel was offered by Michigan.  He's a 6'8", 290 lb. prospect who is supposed to announce his college decision on Tuesday, which is reported to be between Alabama, Nebraska, and West Virginia.  It's unclear whether Michigan's offer will change that announcement date or factor into his decision, but he has not visited Ann Arbor and has already used all five of his official visits allowed (to the three above schools along with Washington State and Wisconsin).  Of course, Ontario is significantly closer than any of those other schools, so a 3.5- or 4-hour car ride might be feasible.

Arvada (CO) Ralston Valley offensive tackle Dan Skipper was offered by Michigan.  He's a 6'10", 295 lb. prospect who would likely be limited to tackle.  Skipper committed to Tennessee back in June and holds offers from Arizona State, Colorado, Northwestern, and Oregon State, among several others.  Tennessee and the home state Colorado Buffaloes are going through coaching transitions, which might open the door for Skipper to join the class.  Despite the re-commitment of Dawson, Michigan appears to be considering taking a sixth offensive lineman in the class, likely a tackle. (Highlights.)

Belton (TX) Belton tight end Durham Smythe decommitted from Texas.  Michigan does not appear to be back in the hunt, but it looks like a re-commitment to Texas is probably out the window.  Florida, Stanford, and Notre Dame all appear to be strong possibilities as of now.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Broken Arrow (OK) Broken Arrow running back Devon Thomas was offered by Michigan.  Thomas is a 5'10", 190 lb. prospect with offers from Clemson, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and others, but he committed to Oklahoma State on Saturday.  Thomas is the teammate of 2014 quarterback Coleman Key, who has visited Michigan and is supposedly on the short list of quarterbacks being evaluated for an offer. (Highlights.)

OFF THE BOARD
Fort Lauderdale (FL) University School defensive tackle Maquedius Bain committed to LSU.  Bain never visited Michigan and was not a serious option at this point, although I do really like him as a prospect.

MISCELLANEOUS
Here's a list of players who visited this past weekend.

St. Clairsville (OH) St. Clairsville linebacker Michael Ferns, a 2014 commit, released his junior season highlights.

David Dawson, Wolverine . . . again

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard David Dawson (image via Rivals)
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard David Dawson committed to Michigan again today.  He originally committed to the Wolverines in February but . . . well, you can find the story here.

My opinion on Dawson hasn't really changed since he committed the first time, so here's his original commitment post.  As far as I know, he hasn't released any highlights from his senior year, so I might recalibrate my projection if I see a little bit more recent highlights.

His updated rankings are as follows:

RATINGS
ESPN: 4-star OG, #1 OG, 84 grade, #87 overall
Rivals: 4-star OG, #6 OG, #151 overall
Scout: 4-star OG, #8 OG, #182 overall
247 Sports: 4-star OG, #6 OG, 94 grade, #108 overall

We had a spirited discussion recently about whether Dawson should have been re-offered by Michigan coaches.  You can find that discussion here if interested.

Dawson (and teammate Delano Hill) gives Michigan 24 commits in a class that will almost certainly reach 25, if not more.  As the fifth offensive lineman in the class, Michigan could sit tight or perhaps pursue another commitment from someone like Corona (CA) Centennial's Cameron Hunt, particularly if redshirt junior offensive tackle Taylor Lewan declares for the NFL Draft.

Poll Results: Should Michigan have re-offered David Dawson?

Yes: 80%
No: 20%

I do not particularly agree with the decision to re-offer Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive lineman David Dawson.  Dawson committed to Michigan in the spring, decommitted a couple weeks ago by visiting Florida, and was re-offered late last week.  Michigan has a policy in place that will no longer hold a spot for players who visit elsewhere, but they pulled Dawson's offer completely when he failed to be forthright about visiting Florida.

This topic has been discussed ad nauseam elsewhere, but I think there's the potential for Michigan recruits not to respect Hoke's "No Visit Policy" in the future.  And they would have at least a decent argument for doing so.  I realize Dawson has had a rough time with the loss of his father, and some people think that's good enough reason to give him another shot.  And maybe it is.  But I think it potentially starts a slippery slope.  What about a kid whose dad left the family recently?  What about a kid whose dad goes to jail?  What about a kid whose dad is abusive?  There are all kinds of family troubles out there, and you either have a policy or you don't.

Recruiting Update: December 3, 2012

David Dawson (#55)
ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2013
Massillon (OH) Washington cornerback Gareon Conley decommitted from Michigan.  He visited Ohio State last weekend, but the coaches plan to continue to recruit him.  He will take an official visit to Columbus later this week, and then he plans to take an official to Ann Arbor on December 14.  I never removed Conley from the board, but he's now a "free agent" again, so to speak.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard David Dawson was re-offered by Michigan.  Dawson was committed to Michigan for about eight months, but a planned visit to Florida forfeited his spot in the recruiting class.  After exploring his options and apparently regretting his decision to explore those options, the coaches have re-offered him and said they will continue to recruit him.  But there's a chance that one of two new Michigan offerees, Cameron Hunt or Kenny Lacy, could commit before Dawson.  Dawson plans to take an official visit to Michigan on December 14.

Corona (CA) Centennial offensive tackle Cameron Hunt earned a Michigan offer.  Hunt is currently committed to Cal but is looking around.  I wrote up a scouting report on him last week.  He appears to be a potential replacement for Dawson.

Phoenix (AZ) Mountain Pointe offensive tackle Kenny Lacy was offered by Michigan.  Lacy is currently committed to UCLA but is looking around.  I also wrote up a scouting report on him last week, and he too appears to be a potential replacement for Dawson.

Elizabeth City (NC) Northeastern linebacker Jamieon Moss was offered by Michigan.  Moss is a 6'2", 210 lb. prospect who is committed to Virginia Tech but also holds offers from Maryland, North Carolina, and North Carolina State.  Moss has mentioned he's potentially interested in looking around, and he visited NC State this fall, so there's potential for another team to flip him.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Oradell (NJ) Bergen Catholic defensive end Garrett Dickerson earned a Michigan offer.  If the school sounds familiar, it's the alma mater of former Michigan target Tanner McEvoy a quarterback who is now starting at Arizona Western after transferring from South Carolina.  Dickerson's brother plays at Northwestern.  As a sophomore in 2011, Garrett had 50 tackles and 4 sacks.

Southfield (MI) Southfield defensive end Lawrence Marshall was offered by Michigan.  He's a 6'3", 225 lb. end with offers from Indiana, Michigan State, and Pitt, among others.  He looks like a weakside end who won't wow you with his speed rush, but could be a solid run defender with a decent occasional rush.

Crete (IL) Crete-Monee linebacker Nyles Morgan earned an offer from Michigan.  Morgan is a 6'2", 220 lb. prospect with offers from Illinois, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, UCLA, and Wisconsin, among others.  Crete-Monee is becoming a familiar name for followers of Michigan recruiting, since it's also the school of one-time 2012 commit Anthony Standifer and highly touted 2013 target LaQuon Treadwell.

OFF THE BOARD
Forth Worth (TX) All Saints Episcopal offensive guard Demetrius Knox committed to Texas.  Texas was always considered the front-runner for Knox's services, and he's likely to be a high 4-star prospect when all is said and done.

Recruiting Update: October 16, 2012

Denzel Ward with Wolverine Nation's Chantel Jennings
ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2013
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard David Dawson decommitted from Michigan.  He will visit Florida next weekend, and there's a very strong chance that he will end up committing to the Gators, as he's been flirting with visiting Gainesville for months.  Check out his decommitment post for more analysis.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Chicago (IL) Hales Franciscan offensive tackle Denzel Ward was offered by Michigan.  He's a 6'9", 295 lb. kid with an offer from Purdue as well.  Ward's cousin is quarterback Robert Gregory, who attended Chicago (IL) Simeon and chose Purdue last winter; Simeon is also the alma mater of Michigan offensive guard Chris Bryant.

David Dawson, Ex-Wolverine

David Dawson (#55)
Detroit (MI) Cass Tech offensive guard David Dawson decommitted from Michigan on Sunday morning.  He had been flirting with visiting other schools - particularly Florida - for months, and he has decided to visit Gainesville this coming weekend.  During the summer, quite a stink was caused when he was at The Opening in Oregon and mentioned that he wanted to visit Florida.  The coaches put a stop to that flirtation at that point, and some people assumed that would be the end of it.  However, Dawson's comments about that incident and his attitude in general made me think that he would continue to be one to watch.

Head coach Brady Hoke has a policy that any players committed to Michigan shouldn't visit other schools; if they do, their scholarship offer will be rescinded.  Obviously, Dawson broke that commitment when he decided to visit the Gators.  I have no problem with Hoke's policy at all.  He wants guys who are 100% committed to Michigan.  At the same time, I hold no ill will toward Dawson for wanting to look around - kids making the biggest decisions of their lives should consider all their options before they're past the point of no return.  Unfortunately, he made a decision for Michigan before he was 100% sure.

As you might have concluded from my past posts and comments (see his commitment post), I'm not a huge fan of Dawson's abilities.  Obviously, some of the recruiting services disagree with me, as he's a top 250 prospect to all four major recruiting services; I gave him a TTB Rating of 67 (a.k.a. an average Big Ten starter).  I think he could have earned a starting job later in his career at Michigan, but I didn't see a path toward stardom for him.  In that respect, this shouldn't be a huge loss for Michigan.

However, now the Wolverines will have to regroup and go after another offensive lineman to fill the class.  All of Michigan's offensive line offerees have committed elsewhere except Laremy Tunsil, who's not considering Michigan.  Lemont (IL) Lemont offensive tackle Ethan Pocic and New Lenox (IL) Lincoln-Way West offensive tackle Colin McGovern were both very high on Michigan before committing to LSU and Notre Dame, respectively.  Those are the two offerees that I would keep an eye on to see if they reconsider their choices.  If the coaches are expanding their recruitment, options could include Penn State decommitment Dorian Johnson, Canton (MI) Canton offensive guard Cameron Dillard, or Huber Heights (OH) Wayne offensive guard Lovell Peterson.

Michigan now has 22 commitments in the class of 2013.
