2015 Season Countdown: #63 Wyatt Shallman

Wyatt Shallman
Name: Wyatt Shallman
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 244 lbs.
High school: Novi (MI) Catholic Central
Position: Running back
Class: Redshirt sophomore
Jersey number: #33
Last year: I ranked Shallman #66 and said he would be a backup H-back. He had 1 carry for 5 yards while playing in nine games.

Shallman has bounced around a little bit so far in his career, playing some running back, fullback, and H-back. He came out of high school as somewhat of an athlete, and that's still the category he inhabits. Even the coaches seem a little bit confused, as both Hoke's staff and Harbaugh's staff have bounced him around. The majority of his playing time in 2014 came on special teams.

In this year's spring game, Shallman was used quite a bit as a tailback. Despite pretty good overall numbers at the position, injuries and such left Michigan short-handed, so Shallman and cornerback Ross Taylor-Douglas each got several snaps. Harbaugh has experience using jumbo-sized running backs in college, such as Toby Gerhart at Stanford. The Wolverines seem to have a stable of big running backs: De'veon Smith, Derrick Green, Ty Isaac, and Shallman are all between 228 and 244 lbs. Since Shallman is the least athletic of the bunch, I do not expect him to get a lot of carries. But if he can prove to be difficult to bring down, then he could be the staff's go-to guy in short yardage situations and near the goal line.

Prediction: Backup running back

2014 Season Countdown: #66 Wyatt Shallman

Wyatt Shallman
Name: Wyatt Shallman
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 243 lbs.
High school: Novi (MI) Catholic Central
Position: Fullback
Class: Redshirt freshman
Jersey number: #33
Last year: I ranked Shallman #85 and said he would redshirt. He redshirted.

Coming into his freshman year, there were varying reports on where Shallman would play. As expected, he redshirted, but he was seen at varying times warming up with the running backs and the tight ends (a position group that includes H-backs at times). He was listed by recruiting sites anywhere from 225 to 245 lbs., but the official roster had him at 243 lbs. this spring when he was working mostly with the tight end/H-back position group.

Not much more should be expected of Shallman this fall. Michigan's top two fullbacks (Joe Kerridge, Sione Houma) return, and Michigan should be able to make do with their other tight ends, especially once Jake Butt returns. Shallman should find himself no higher than third on the depth chart, but at his size, he may be an asset as a blocker on punts or kickoff returns.

Prediction: Backup H-back

Position Change Fallout

Desmond Morgan (#44)
There have been a couple major position changes and a couple minor ones during the offseason. In an attempt to allay some people's fears, here are my thoughts on how things are developing.

Ross Douglas from CB to RB. Michigan failed to nab a running back in the 2014 class, largely for a lack of trying. There were some candidates out there that the Wolverines simply chose not to pursue, and then rising senior Thomas Rawls chose to transfer to Central Michigan. Michigan needed to add some depth at running back, and Douglas was a pretty good one in high school. I do not think Douglas is in danger of turning into a feature back anytime soon, but he may provide some change-of-pace skills for Michigan's Thunder Squared combination of Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith. Douglas played some running back on the scout team last year, and I think this switch is likely to stick, at least until Michigan has a chance to bring in more running backs in 2015 or 2016. He could also be a guy who bounces back and forth from offense to defense.

Wyatt Shallman from RB to H-back. I have long believed that Shallman would not make much of an impact on the running back position, except perhaps as a short yardage guy. I think the need for a short yardage back is relatively non-existent with Green and Smith on the team. Additionally, new offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier seems like a guy who's going to run a lot of single back sets and a lot of spread formations, meaning the fullback will likely be phased out for the next couple years. The 6'3", 243 lb. Shallman could help out as a blocker and pass catcher out of the backfield, and he has the size to be a second tight end on the field like an Aaron Shea.

Keith Heitzman from DE to TE. Heitzman was the starter at strongside end to begin last season, but a hand injury combined with competition from other players bumped him down in the lineup. With other guys emerging at strongside end (Brennen Beyer, Taco Charlton, Chris Wormley), Michigan has the flexibility to put Heitzman at tight end to shore up the position after Jake Butt's ACL injury. Butt might be back by week three, but Heitzman could be a long-term solution as a blocking tight end, since junior A.J. Williams has struggled in his first two seasons. Heitzman played tight end in high school, and while he probably won't run away from anyone or dazzle people with his moves, he should be a quality in-line blocker and has the potential to catch a pass here or there.

Jake Ryan from SAM to MIKE. Royce Jenkins-Stone from MIKE to SAM. James Ross from WILL to SAM. Desmond Morgan from MIKE to WILL. Did I catch all the moves? I think so. A couple of the younger inside linebackers are staying inside, so I won't bother analyzing that. The new starting lineup will look a lot like the old starting lineup, except Morgan will be on the weak side, Ryan will be in the middle, and Ross will be on the strong side. Head coach Brady Hoke announced that Michigan would be running more Over looks in 2014, which means that the protected linebacker (formerly WILL James Ross) will now be middle linebacker Jake Ryan. This also likely changes Michigan's front seven slightly, from a "hold your gap" defense to more of a penetrating unit. Against base 12 personnel previously, Michigan had six defenders from tight end to tackle (four defensive linemen, the WILL, and the MIKE). In an Over look, the defensive front will have seven defenders inside that box (four defensive linemen and all three linebackers). This should allow Ryan to roam from sideline to sideline while keeping Ross relatively clean, and Morgan will still be the guy who has to take on lead blocks from fullbacks, which he does fairly well.

Who should be happy/sad about the Doug Nussmeier hire?

Could Shane Morris be the next A.J. McCarron?
THIS HIRE IS GOOD FOR . . .
Fifth year senior quarterback Devin Gardner. Gardner has one final chance to show his stuff at quarterback, and I think Nussmeier will bring a more cohesive offense to Ann Arbor. Gardner can run out of the shotgun and pistol, and he's not bad throwing from under center. I expect Nussmeier to simplify Michigan's blocking schemes, which should help out the young linemen and the quarterback. The new offensive coordinator also likes to push the ball down the field (as did Al Borges), which suits Gardner well because he has a strong arm and throws a nice deep ball.

The offensive line. Michigan's young offensive line was terrible this past season, and it appears that Nussmeier may bring in a new offensive line coach to help him out. Whether coach Darrell Funk remains or not, I expect that Nussmeier will want a little more beef up front, and his coaching pedigree at Alabama suggests that he can help those guys achieve a new level of success.

Sophomore running backs Derrick Green and De'Veon Smith. Nussmeier utilized the inside zone game and zone sweeps to great effect at Alabama, which recruited Green out of high school. Both Green and Smith fit the role of good inside zone runners, because both of them are north-south runners capable of running through tackles. Green has the better speed of the two and would likely be more effective on the zone sweeps.

Sophomore quarterback Shane Morris and freshman quarterback Wilton Speight. Nussmeier has tutored numerous successful college quarterbacks (A.J. McCarron, Jake Locker, Drew Stanton, Jeff Smoker) and spent time with the St. Louis Rams under passing game guru Mike Martz. I can see Morris as a McCarron-like Game Manager Plus, a guy who can not only take care of the football and keep his team in the game, but make some downfield throws to really stress defenses.

Redshirt freshman H-backs Khalid Hill and Wyatt Shallman. Nussmeier likes to use his H-backs as lead blockers, wings, slot receivers, etc. Hill and Shallman appear to be good fits for this role, more so than the fullbacks who have been playing the past couple seasons.

THIS HIRE IS BAD FOR . . .
Redshirt junior running back Justice Hayes. Nussmeier does not appear to be a fan of scatback types, at least not for featured roles. Hayes was reported to be moving to slot receiver, although he started Michigan's bowl game at running back. His chances of winning the running back job next year likely took a hit with this hire.

Junior fullback Sione Houma and redshirt junior fullback Joe Kerridge. Nussmeier is a proponent of a one-back offense and doesn't have a whole lot of use for true fullback types. The hire will almost certainly diminish their role in the offense, which was already more significant than it should have been based on Michigan's personnel and abilities.

2013 Season Countdown: #85 Wyatt Shallman

Wyatt Shallman
Name: Wyatt Shallman
Height: 6'3"
Weight: 245 lbs.
High school: Novi (MI) Catholic Central
Position: Running back
Class: Freshman
Jersey number: #33
Last year: Shallman was a senior in high school. I gave him a TTB Rating of 65.

Shallman committed to Michigan in February 2012, joining his former teammate Matt Godin as a Wolverine. Michigan's coaching staff offered him as a running back, despite a reported size of 6'3" and 245 lbs.; information has since indicated that he was more like 225 lbs., which makes the tailback position a little more feasible.  But throughout the recruiting process, Michigan fans have been contemplating whether he'll play running back, fullback, H-back, tight end, defensive end, or outside linebacker.

I have taken some heat from various corners of the internet for discounting Shallman's chances of making an impact at tailback.  It's extremely rare that a guy who is 6'3" and 225 lbs. coming out of high school ends up as an impact college runner, let alone if he's closer to 245.  I do think he can play  tailback in certain situations, such as short yardage and goal line spots. However, I also think he'll have some other talented runners to beat out in the coming years, including a higher rated, more explosive player in the form of Derrick Green, who happens to be about 220 lbs. himself.  Shallman should be able to redshirt while the coaches figure out where he fits best.

Prediction: Redshirt

Poll results: Best running back in 2013 class?

Derrick Green
Derrick Green - 78%
My thoughts are pretty clear from these guys' commitment posts and the general attitude toward these players that Green would be my choice as the top running back in the 2013 class.  Green has steadily improved throughout his high school career, going from guard to eventually being one of the top few backs in the class.  He has the size, speed, and attitude to carry that success into college.  I don't think he'll be the greatest back in the history of college football or anything, but I do think he will have a good career in the winged helmet.

DeVeon Smith - 17%
Smith is a guy who's a little smaller than Green, and while he runs with an attitude, he lacks some big-play capability because of a lack of speed.  Big runs out of Smith are going to have to come on the heels of several broken tackles.  Some people like to compare Smith to Mike Hart, but Hart had to break a lot of tackles to become Michigan's all-time leading rusher because of a lack of explosive speed; if Smith lacks some of the vision and toughness that Hart had, he's going to struggle to become the lead guy.

Wyatt Shallman - 3%
Shallman had been insistent that he was recruited to be a tailback, but as time has gone on, it seems more and more clear that he will end up as a fullback or H-back, or maybe somewhere else entirely; after all, he did play defensive end as a high schooler.  Shallman has a chance to be an effective player, but chances are slim that his career will surpass either of the aforementioned backs'.

No statistics appear to be available for Shallman, who may still be nicked up. Catholic Central faces off against Warren De La Salle next week. The Shamrocks are now 2-2.

September 23, 2012:  Catholic Central edged a Morris-less Warren De La Salle, 31-30, in overtime.  Shallman did not play for the third straight game due to injury and was described as "frequently hobbled the last two years," but expected back "before the end of the season."  The Shamrocks are now 3-2.

September 29, 2012:  Catholic Central won their third game in a row on Saturday, beating University of Detroit Jesuit by a score of 42-6.  Shallman had 6 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 interception, which was returned for 20 yards.  According to his twitter account, Shallman is "watching Rice film" getting ready for Birmingham (MI) Brother Rice next week.  Detroit Catholic Central is now 4-2.

October 6, 2012:  Catholic Central was defeated by Birmingham (MI) Brother Rice by a score of 20-14.  Shallman had eight tackles, two sacks and a forced fumble.  Things only get harder for Shallman and Catholic Central, as they host 6-1 Orchard Lake (MI) St. Mary's next week.  Catholic Central is now 4-3.

Mailbag: What position will Shallman play?

So, I know that coaches have told Shallman he is going to get a shot at FB or RB in college, but he is getting to be a very big boy for that.  He is already two or more inches bigger than former NFL back Mike Alstott and already 20 pounds heavier than former NFLer John Riggins.  Most FBs are 5'10"-6'1"; much over that is not good for FBs, right? His frame is going to add a lot in S&C.  What are your odds he becomes Ryan Van Bergen II? Would people feel better about this recruiting class if we looked at Wyatt as a DL and not as a FB? I kinda think he would be wasted as a situational offensive player.
Well, I sort of answered this question in my scouting report of Wyatt Shallman from this past winter, but I didn't talk about this aspect in great depth.

First of all, I wouldn't really worry about how Shallman compares to John Riggins.  Riggins played from 1971 to 1985, so he was retired for a decade before Shallman was even born.  Players are bigger and faster than they were then.  There are guys like Michael Turner (5'10", 247 lbs.), Steven Jackson (6'2", 240 lbs.), and Brandon Jacobs (6'4", 264 lbs.) running amok in the NFL these days, and each of those guys is heavier and/or taller than Riggins.

I am not the world's biggest fan Shallman's abilities.  He doesn't have the suddenness of an elite running back, he doesn't have great speed, and he doesn't break enough tackles to satisfy me.  What he does offer is a differing set of skills from any other running back on the roster or in the 2013 recruiting class.  With the offensive line Michigan is building, the Wolverines should be plowing over people in a couple years the way Wisconsin has been for the past several seasons.  Shallman is a poor man's Ron Dayne, P.J. Hill, Montee Ball, etc.  This past Saturday night, I watched Oregon tight end Colt Lyerla (6'5", 246 lbs.) line up in the backfield and carry the ball 7 times for 63 yards against Arizona.  Players of lots of different shapes and sizes can run the ball in college.

As for Shallman's size, there have been suggestions that he's not quite 6'3" or 6'4" and that he's not 255 lbs.  He doesn't look 255 to me; I might buy 235.  Recruiting weights are often overreported, whether it's innocent exaggeration or someone trying to beef up his own measurements to garner more attention.  Several guys in Michigan's 2012 recruiting class showed up to campus weighing less than was reported on Rivals or Scout.

The coaching staff seems to have been pretty honest with recruits about their future positions.  They would rather have guys playing positions they want to play than to have to shoehorn guys into positions they dislike. Guys will play harder for you that way.  The coaches have promised Shallman a shot at running back, and I think that's where he'll stay.  There's always a chance that somebody will change positions, but it doesn't seem to be Brady Hoke's M.O. to bring guys in and then turn their world upside down.  Guys like Jordan Paskorz and Ricardo Miller have changed positions, but Hoke didn't recruit them.  Gardner is making a temporary (or permanent) switch to wide receiver, but again, Hoke never recruited him.

Van Bergen was an athletic guy coming out of high school, but he was clearly headed for the defensive line and never had any delusions otherwise.  He had the frame to add significant weight, and he ended up at almost 290 lbs.  Even if Shallman adds mass, he will likely still be 6'3".  That's relatively short for a strongside end and he could struggle to get his hands on offensive linemen before they get into him.  Meanwhile, unless he makes a concerted effort to beef up, he looks like a guy who could play his college career at 250-ish pounds.

On top of all that, I was not impressed with Shallman's high school highlights.  Word is that he was suffering from some nagging injuries last season, but I don't see a high level of effort and determination on the defensive side of the ball.  Some guys are equally adept at playing football on both sides; other guys have "it" on one side or the other.  Shallman's "it" factor seems higher on offense than defense; he's a fine high school defender, but comparing their high school film, I would take Ryan Van Bergen on defense over Wyatt Shallman.

What are the chances Shallman plays defensive end in his college career?  Eh, I'll go with 15%, just because injuries and attrition and random things happen.  But what are the chances Shallman becomes the next Ryan Van Bergen (a borderline NFL draft pick at defensive end)?  I'd say that's closer to 5%.

Visitors: Michigan vs. UMass

Malik McDowell
Pickerington (OH) North TE Jake Butt: Butt committed to Michigan back in February.

Avon (OH) Avon CB Ross Douglas: Douglas committed to Michigan in July.

Columbus (OH) Marion-Franklin WR Jaron Dukes: Dukes committed to Michigan back in February.

Detroit (MI) East English Village TE Khalid Hill: Hill committed to Michigan back in February.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech RB/LB Gary Hosey: Hosey is a 6'0", 215 lb. athlete from the 2014 class.  He might be physical enough to play fullback, but he does not have the speed to be an FBS tailback.

Westland (MI) John Glenn WR Da'Mario Jones: Jones is a 6'2", 185 lb. wideout who committed to Central Michigan over offers from BGSU and Toledo.  He transferred to John Glenn from Montgomery (NJ) Montgomery.  With LaQuon Treadwell delaying his decision longer and longer - and Michigan appearing to fall back to the pack with him - Michigan might need to offer more receivers in the near future, so Jones might be a guy watch. (Highlights.)

Maitland (FL) Orangewood Christian FB/LB Jimmy Martin: Martin is a 5'11", 205 lb. prospect from the class of 2015.  He claims a 4.62 forty (but was timed at 4.84 at a national combine) and had 111 tackles, 4 sacks, 4 forced fumbles, and 3 fumble recoveries as a freshman in 2011.  Keep in mind that Orangewood is a small Christian school that doesn't play the best competition.  However, he was named to the Maxpreps Freshman All-American Second Team.  His head coach was previously the head coach at Orlando (FL) Dr. Phillips and Orlando (FL) Edgewater, the latter of which sent wide receiver Greg Mathews and linebacker Mike Jones to Michigan. (Freshman highlights.)

Detroit (MI) Loyola DE Malik McDowell: McDowell is a 2014 prospect with offers from Michigan, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oregon, Stanford, and Wisconsin, among others.  He has been considered to be a heavy Michigan lean, but he's also interested in Michigan State and Ohio State.  He is expected to visit MSU for their game against Notre Dame after he visits Ann Arbor in the afternoon.  McDowell stands 6'6" and weighs 292 lbs., and I think he'll eventually end up at defensive tackle rather than end.

Plantation (FL) American Heritage RB Sony Michel: A 2014 prospect, he already has offers from Alabama, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Miami, and Notre Dame.  His older brother Marken is the leading receiver for UMass, which is likely the biggest reason for visiting Michigan.  The younger Michel is coming off an ACL tear he suffered during his sophomore year.

Detroit (MI) Southwestern RB Romello Ross: Ross is a 5'11", 180 lb. running back from the class of 2015.  As a freshman in 2011, he had 1,312 yards rushing, 46 tackles, and 6 interceptions.  He doesn't have any offers yet, but that's not unusual for a kid at the beginning of his sophomore season. (Highlights.)

Novi (MI) Catholic Central RB Wyatt Shallman: Shallman committed to Michigan back in February.

Ottawa (IL) Marquette LS Scott Sypniewski: Sypniewski committed to Michigan back in June.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech CB Damon Webb: Webb is a 5'11", 170 lb. wide receiver/cornerback with offers from LSU, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, and others.  LSU and Michigan appear to be the front runners in his recruitment.

Detroit (MI) Cass Tech LB William White: White is a 6'1", 215 lb. linebacker from the 2014 class.  Of the Cass Tech trio of linebackers, I think White is the second-most talented player behind Deon Drake. (Highlights of White.)

Harper Woods (MI) Chandler Park Academy WR Csont'e York: York committed to Michigan back in May.

Rivals: Michigan's pre-season top 30 recruits for 2013

Csont'e York went from unknown to the #8 prospect in the state
On Tuesday, Rivals released its top 30 recruits from the state of Michigan.  There are six Wolverines on the list altogether.

1. Shane Morris - QB - Warren (MI) De La Salle
3. Jourdan Lewis - CB - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech
4. David Dawson - OG - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech
5. Wyatt Shallman - RB - Novi (MI) Catholic Central
8. Csont'e York - WR - Harper Woods (MI) Chandler Park
23. Khalid Hill - TE - Detroit (MI) Crockett

By comparison, Michigan State has #7 and #10, who are LB John Reschke and RB Gerald Holmes, respectively.

Other players of note on the list:

11. Kenton Gibbs - DT - Detroit (MI) Cass Tech: Gibbs is currently committed to Illinois and has not been offered by Michigan, but if he earns a Michigan offer, I think there's a very good chance that he'll switch his commitment.

13. Berkley Edwards - RB - Chelsea (MI) Chelsea: There has been a lot of noise about Michigan not offering Braylon Edwards' younger brother, but he's not really a need at this point.  If for some reason a roster spot opens up for a small-ish running back, he might get an offer.

24. Teo Redding - WR - Warren (MI) Collegiate: Redding is skinny and needs time to develop, but I wouldn't be totally surprised if he ends up being the Dennis Norfleet of 2013 - a late offer to a local kid who's a bit of a project.

Initial TTB Ratings for 2013

Here's an update on the TTB Ratings for the 2013 recruits:

S Dymonte Thomas, 92
The combination of Thomas's athleticism with Greg Mattison's defensive system makes me think that Thomas should fill up the stat sheet for Michigan in a couple years.

OT Chris Fox, 90
I really like Fox's attitude as a defensive player, and he's a good athlete, too.  I think he could be a dominant right tackle or even play left tackle in college.

QB Shane Morris, 89
Morris would be rated higher if he had some more quality receivers, but right now his receiving corps looks somewhat average.

OG Kyle Bosch, 88
Bosch looks like a left guard to me.  He seems like a smart, quality kid and could compete for playing time rather early, depending on which position Kyle Kalis plays in the class ahead of him.

CB Jourdan Lewis, 86
Lewis has similar skills to Terry Richardson, whom I also like.  But Lewis is a little bigger, so I'm giving him a slight edge.

TE Jake Butt, 82
Butt isn't the speedy freak of an athlete that seems to be dominating college and NFL football these days, but he's a very good prospect and might look especially good with Morris throwing him the ball.

LB Ben Gedeon, 82
Gedeon could probably play any of the three linebacker positions, but he's an old school player who should be pretty good wherever he plays.

OT Logan Tuley-Tillman, 79
Tuley-Tillman could be great if he adjusts to the college game, or he could struggle to acclimate himself to the finer points of the game.

WR Csont'e York, 79
York is a solid route runner with good size and decent speed.  He should be a solid player but maybe not a future superstar.

DE Taco Charlton, 75
I really like Charlton's athleticism, but he doesn't use his hands well, which concerns me because it's a bit of an instinctual thing.

CB Gareon Conley, 75

WR Jaron Dukes, 70
Dukes could be a mover if he turns out to be faster than he's looked so far.  The ceiling is a little bit low for big, possession receivers.

TE Khalid Hill, 68
The position Hill will play somewhat limits his upside.  He could be a very good role player from the U-back position.

OG David Dawson, 67
With the guards in this class and the one ahead of him, Dawson might get lost in the shuffle for a few years.

RB Wyatt Shallman, 65
Shallman looks like a running back who could put up a lot of scores in short yardage situations.  He's a high floor, low ceiling type of player.

RB Deveon Smith, 63

C Patrick Kugler, Inc.
I have yet to see film on Kugler.
