Recruiting Update: July 16, 2012

Kyle LaPorte (#2 in black)
ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2013
Piscataway (NJ) Piscataway wide receiver Kyle LaPorte has a Michigan offer.  It sounds like the offer came recently, but Michigan seems to be full at cornerback (LaPorte's other position) and almost full at wide receiver, especially if LaQuon Treadwell commits soon.  It's unclear where LaPorte would fit, but he has offers from Miami, Penn State, and Rutgers, so that's not a shabby offer list.

ADDED TO THE BOARD: 2014
Baltimore (MD) Gilman cornerback Troy Vincent received an offer from Michigan.  Vincent is a 5'10", 192 lb. defensive back with offers from Arizona State, Maryland, Michigan State, Penn State, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.  Vincent played for Georgetown Prep last season but transferred to Gilman in the off-season, where he will be teammates with Michigan commit Henry Poggi. Vincent's father is former NFL cornerback Troy Vincent, who played for Wisconsin before becoming a five-time Pro Bowl player for the Philadelphia Eagles; he was the #7 overall pick by the Miami Dolphins and also played for the Buffalo Bills and Washington Redskins.  The elder Vincent finished his career with 47 interceptions. (Highlights.)

OFF THE BOARD
Tampa Bay (FL) Tech wide receiver Richard Benjamin committed to UCF.  Benjamin is a 6'1", 195 lb. kid who got an early offer from Michigan, but there was never any buzz about him having significant interest in the Wolverines.

Placer (CA) Placer defensive tackle Eddie Vanderdoes committed to USC.  For a long time, I assumed that his choice would come down to Oregon or USC.  The Trojans are putting together an excellent class, even though it's a small one.  Eight of USC's fourteen commitments are guys with Michigan offers.  I wrote up a scouting report on Vanderdoes a couple months ago.

WEEKEND VISITORS
There was only one visitor this past weekend, but it was a pretty good one in the form of Derek Kief.

  1. I beginning to doubt the integrity of 247Sports. They consistently list information that Rivals, Scout and ESPN doesn't and more often than not it is revealed to be inaccurate. Like this offer for Vincent Smith, Jr... they don't even have a date listed.... just like Hoza Scott and Khairi Clark who 247 is still alone on listing with Michigan offers.

    1. You sound like an unsatisfied subscriber at Rivals or Scout.

Do you really believe we haven't offered someone like Hoza Scott? He's one of the top defenders in the nation and has offers from Alabama and LSU.

Khairi Clark has offers from Notre Dame, LSU, Florida, and Georgia offer. With those offers, how is it hard to believe that we haven't offered him?

Troy Vincent Jr. is the son of 5-time Pro Bowl cornerback Troy Vincent Sr. He's going to be one of the top corners in 2014, and his father's alma mater (Wisconsin) recently offered. It makes sense for us to have offered TVJ.

If the staff didn't get an early offer out to those three, then they're not recruiting well. However, not recruiting well isn't our staff's modus operandi, but getting offers out to elite prospects is, so I'm fairly certain that Rivals and Scout are just behind 247sports. 247sports is already contacting 2014 recruits, ranking, and rating them. Rivals and Scout, well, they're not. That's why it makes sense that 247sports is the only one listing these offers.

If you're truly into recruiting, then do yourself a favor, and get a 247sports subscription. It's not expensive, they have a bigger staff, and they are generally ahead of Rivals and Scout.

    2. Rivals also listed offers for Hoza Scott and still lists one for Gaius Vaenuku, even though neither guy has one right now. None of the sites is perfect.

    3. If I'm a disgruntled rivals or scout member, I take it you work for 247. I had a subscription and dropped it for lack of quality content.... that and the fact that Rivals has the most accurate rankings of the bunch. At one point, I had them all. I never said I doubt that those players would/have been offered based on anything but my distrust in 247. They publish more fluff than anyone and rarely do they get the jump on anyone else. I have noticed that they're making efforts to get out in front of the 2014 class... that's why I'm wondering if they're reaching.

  2. Had another read of your anonymous post. Laughed a little bit at the last line. You definitely work there. I find ESPN a more valuable source of recruiting info... and that's saying something.
