Poll results: Who will be the best defensive lineman in the 2013 class?

Taco Charlton (left, with Shane Morris) has Michigan fans excited
Taco Charlton: 55%
The only early enrollee of the group, defensive end Charlton was listed on the spring roster at 6'6" and 265 lbs.  Technique was a bit of an issue in high school, but he used his hands better in the spring game and notched a couple sacks against the offense's backups.  Not bad for a kid who should be dealing with a bout of senioritis.  The physical attributes are present; his success depends on his work ethic and attention to improving his technique.

Henry Poggi: 32%
Poggi is almost the opposite of Charlton, although he's not a bad athlete.  Poggi plays defensive tackle and has great technique for an incoming freshman, but he's only listed at about 6'4" and 265 lbs.  He probably won't ever be a mammoth defensive lineman, but he's athletic enough and stout enough to be a productive player at Michigan.

Maurice Hurst, Jr.: 12%
Hurst is a 6'2", 305-pounder who also played running back in high school.  The lowest rated player of the trio, he played well in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl and showed some impressive quickness.  He could play nose tackle or 3-tech defensive tackle.

  1. I was in the small minority that voted for Hurst. I think his athleticism on the inside DL is going to make him really good. As in multiple All B1G honors good.

    1. I too voted for Hurst. I think Taco and Hurst have very high ceilings. I think Poggi is a high floor type of guy. I think all 3 are going to be contributors sooner than later.

  2. I agree I think Hurst may be the sleeper in this class. Don't get me wrong I think Mr. Charlton is going to be very, very good, but Hurst is my pick for best D-lineman in this class.

  3. This is probably a push, but that's a great thing as all 3 players have great potential. I think Hurst and Taco will see the field earlier because of the depth the coaches have built, and the weight Poggi still has to gain, but I wouldn't be surprised if all 3 are some of the best in the B1G as upperclassmen.

  4. I'm fairly excited about all three players. Poggi's ceiling might be higher than people think. He's got decent athleticism, is very smart and a hard worker. He might end up having a nice NFL career after Michigan.

  6. I'm a huge Taco fan. I think he has the tantalizing combination of athletic ability and size, especially this early in the game, to be all B1G later in his career. The coaches are excited about this kid for a reason, just wait and see.
