Michigan to play Virginia Tech in Sugar Bowl

Weird fact: Virginia Tech cheerleaders don't wear shoes.

On January 3, 2012, Michigan will play the Virginia Tech Hokies in the Sugar Bowl at 8:30 p.m. on ESPN.

Michigan has played in the Sugar Bowl just one other time, back in 1984.  Bo Jackson and the Auburn Tigers beat Michigan by a score of 9-7.

Meanwhile, the Hokies are 1-2 in Sugar Bowl appearances.  They beat Texas in 1995 by a score of 28-10.  Then they lost to Florida State in 2000 and Auburn in 2005 by scores of 46-29 and 16-13, respectively.

Michigan and Virginia Tech have never played each other.

I will be spitting out random preview materials over the next several weeks.

  1. Thunder, would we have been better off playing Houston (By "better" I meant to say would Houston have been an easier opponent)?

I definitely think Houston would have been an easier game. I haven't watched them much this year - except for highlights, the only game of theirs I watched was Saturday's Conference USA championship game against Southern Mississippi. But I wasn't impressed by anything they did, really.

  3. Hard to say - I think the weakness of the team is the secondary's coverage ability. Houston would have prevented a challenge...though I think our offense would have been dominant.

I agree that the secondary is the weakness of the defense, but just like most of the season, I think the defensive line would have made up for it. I think Van Bergen and Martin would have had a field day with Houston's OL, because they didn't impress me at all against Southern Miss.

  5. There is a fairly famous story about a Michigan bowl appearance where the other team was mocking the size of Michigan at the beginning of the game, and the Michigan defense stuck everything that moved that day and beat the snot out of the opposing offense the entire game.

The score of the Auburn Sugar Bowl game makes me think this might be it. Although maybe it was the Oklahoma game with the Selmans.

    Anybody heard this one?
