DE Aaron Lewis (Rutgers): Lewis made 1 tackle, 1 pass breakups, and 2 quarterback hurries in a 49-17 win over Akron.

DeleteThe majority of guys who leave leave for a reason and are not missed. Keon Sabb is a notable outlier.
DeleteThe folks at UMass have great patience. 1-11, 3-9, and now 0-2 to start the year.
ReplyDeleteYeah...I don't think it will last beyond this season if he doesn't improve upon last year's record. But it's nothing compared to Curt Mallory. Mallory has been at Indiana State since 2017 and has a 20-48 record with only one winning season (his second year, 2018). He's 0-1 so far this year.

DeleteInteresting that McElwain hasn't gone on to anything. Do you have any knowledge on whether that is by choice or not?
ReplyDeleteOT - I made some pessimistic posts this summer about MSU having very good recruiting. After a couple of games, my worst-case is coming to fruition with MSU looking very good and with Chiles/Marsh looking like a scary combo for 3 years. Last year, DeBoer, Elko, and Smith were three very good available coaches. I know mediocre-Manuel will keep Moore, even if he goes 4-8, but if he did fire Moore, is anyone available that is good as Smith?
I don't really think McElwain has done anything to warrant getting another big job. He did a decent job at CSU, bombed at Florida, and then became an assistant coach. He's had an up-and-down tenure at CMU as the head guy. He might just be the type of guy who's a career MAC-level head coach.
DeleteI really like Kalen DeBoer. I'm not so sure about Elko and Smith.
But MSU doesn't look "very good." They've barely squeaked by a couple teams. They have 16-10 and 27-24 victories. Chiles is graded as one of the worst QBs in the Big Ten - below Davis Warren - and is completing 54% of his passes for 3 touchdowns and 5 interceptions. There have been some big plays, yes, but he's also made a bunch of terrible plays.
