AnnArbor.com: Michigan seniors prepare with Mike Barwis
Kayden Kenzie
Mike Martin, David Molk, Ryan Van Bergen, Kevin Koger, Mark Huyge, and Steve Watson are training with former Michigan strength and conditioning coach Mike Barwis to prepare for the NFL Draft (article plus video).
In a DetNews article today, Martin et al. praised Barwis (understandably) and talked about the differences between "football" shape and "combine" shape.
Aside: I can see why they'd want to train with him instead of the current S&C crew. It's probably just a matter of their having more miles with Barwis. Make sense?
Anyway, I understand what he said at face value, but something seems odd to me. If there's a difference between combine shape and football shape, fine. But, wouldn't the NFL logically be more interested in football shape? Could it be measured? Is there value in knowing what kind of athletes live under all the football mass?
I'm having trouble understanding the values of the two approaches and how the NFL makes its decisions here. Any insight would be welcomed.
Yes, two different shapes but what it doesn't mean is that Barwis only trains one type. He knows that any guy training for a combine (and these are not his first by the way) has to be able to hit certain metrics for that event. To answer the NFL shape - there sure are a lot of NFL guys that train with Mike (that didn't have him as a S&C either). Pretty good crop is coming back.
He is good pure and simple, and knows how to work with these guys specifically for the task at hand. Rumors are that he turned away a considerable amount of combine clients basically because he is also running a successful business for the the general public. My opinion is that combine prep will grow in volume as he is able to expand his operations but you have to remember that you only get these guys for a few months and if they're drafted they are pretty much gone until the next off-season.
I don't even like to think about Barwis at Florida State with the series of recruiting classes those guys are putting together.
ReplyDeleteHere's a question for the coach(es) on this site:

The NFL is just politics and money between businessmen. College football and especially Michigan football will always rule!!
