MGoBlog: Unsolicited Advice for Penn State Fans

Hello, ladies.

This MGoBlog post summarizes my thoughts about the Penn State coaching situation pretty well.  The Nittany Lions hired New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien to be their new head coach, and the reaction from PSU fans and alumni has been less than stellar.

I was recently talking to a Penn State fan (whose cousin played for the Nittany Lions and is now in the NFL), and this fan said, "Before you know it they'll have names on the backs of their jerseys.  I think fans are just going to stop coming to their games.  They'll be lucky if that place is 75% full."

Now, of course that's not true.  People are still going to come to the games.  People said that the fans were going to boycott the Nebraska game this year, and the place was still jam packed.  Beaver Stadium will be full or nearly full for every game next year.  But that general attitude that "Anything different than what we're used to is unacceptable" gets very annoying very quickly.

I hope Penn State suffers for a while.  They deserve to for the things that happened in State College.  But it's a strong program with nice facilities, a tradition of good players, and a tradition of winning.

  1. It was ridiculous for PSU to pursue top guys like the Boise coach. But I am surprised they could not real in a lower-level head coach with some ties to the region. Like out of the MAC or even I-AA. Considering the PR and managerial mess at PSU, I would have targeted a guy who has run a program before and has some relationships with high schools.

An NFL offensive background is completely worthless in college IMO. Those guys just design and call plays. Don't think an NFL OC's ability to motivate players is a top factor for success either, unlike in college. They have real mess on their hands with alumni and former players going bananas. This guy is going to have a tougher job than RR did, and his QB situation may actually be worse.
