Ex-Wolverine Updates

Thomas Rawls (#34) had 155 yards and 2 touchdowns this week
Former CB Cullen Christian: Christian had 2 tackles in West Virginia's 54-0 demolishing of Towson.

Former CB commit Gareon Conley: Conley had 2 tackles as #8 Ohio State lost to unranked Virginia Tech by a score of 35-21.

Former CB commit Dallas Crawford: In Miami's 41-7 win over Florida A&M, Crawford - now a safety - had 2 tackles.

Former S Joshua Furman: Furman had 5 tackles, 2 tackles for loss, and 1 pass breakup in Oklahoma State's 40-23 win over Southwest Missouri State.

Former K commit Matt Goudis: Goudis was 2/4 on field goals and 5/5 on extra points in Miami's 41-7 win over Florida A&M.

Former RB commit Demetrius Hart: Hart's Colorado State team lost to Boise State by a score of 37-24. Hart had 10 carries for 16 yards and 2 catches for 17 yards.

Former RB Thomas Rawls: Rawls, a Central Michigan Chippewa now, had 31 carries for 155 yards and 2 touchdowns (from 2 and 16 yards), plus 3 catches for 50 yards. Central Michigan beat Purdue by a score of 38-17.

Former head coach Rich Rodriguez: Arizona barely pulled out a 26-23 victory over the University of Texas-San Antonio, which would have been an embarrassing loss for the Wildcats. UTSA pulled within a field goal with over seven minutes remaining in the game, but they couldn't finish off the comeback. Running back Nick Wilson ran for 174 yards and 1 touchdown, while wideout Cayleb Jones caught 4 balls for 143 yards, including an 85-yard touchdown on the first play of the game.

Former S Ray Vinopal: Vinopal had 5 tackles and 1 interception, which he returned for 13 yards, in Pitt's 30-20 win over Boston College.

  1. I watched a bit of the Pitt vs. BC game, and when the announcers mentioned Ray Vinopal, I thought, "Hey, I know him ... I read about him on TTB!" :-)

I live in Tucson, so the fortunes of RR and U of A is in the local news here. I am interested to see how RR and the Wildcats fare this year, RR's 3rd season at Arizona. The PAC 12 has some pretty good teams, and I'm not convinced RR's spread implementation can overcome what he may face from the likes of USC, UCLA, Arizona State, and of course Oregon.

Watching the UTSA game I was left with the sense that RR's spread offense looks dated. I can't explain it because I'm not that good with X's and O's. But it felt dated compared to other spread teams. I think UofA is good enough to go 8-4 (against some not-to-good PAC12 teams), but I'm curious to see if they can click to the next level and get to 10-2 or better. I have my doubts. We'll see.

It's interesting living here in Tucson ... the football atmosphere is totally different from back in the midwest. There's a core of supporters, but football is not as big here as back east. Season tickets for the games start at $99 for all 7 home games. Get a few miles away from campus and the university feel drops off.

    1. I moved to Connecticut from Michigan a year and a half ago, and while there are of course UConn fans around here, no one really gives a shit about college sports otherwise. It's all about Patriots vs. Giants (they can both go to hell) and similar Boston/NYC splits. I'm much more into the college scene and would rather live somewhere with people who care.

    2. RR doesn't have a running qb this year which is why it may seem his spread is outdated. I think it looks pretty sweet considering he's adapting it to his personnel.

    3. I'm pleased to hear about RR on TTB and the point that he's adjusting his system. It seems like the experience at UM was positive for him. I wish him good luck this year.

    4. Anonymous at 10:45 made the comment about adjusting his system.

I'm not so sure he is. My personal opinion is he's stuck in the mid-2000's model. 2007 was his peak.

But like I said, "We'll see." When he starts consistently beating teams like Oregon or USC or UCLA then I'll believe it. My guess is he'll be a consistent 8-4 / 9-3 type guy for Arizona ... and for UofA that's plenty good enough.

  2. I keep reading decent stat lines for Furman and Vinopal. Have you been watching the games, Magnus? Do they look legit out there?

  3. I saw Vinopal's name and thought.."good grief that guy is still playing college ball?!?!?!?" Seems like he was at Michigan 6 year ago now.

  4. I saw former QB commit Kevin Sousa got a DWI for apparently riding a 4-wheeler drunk around Wake Forest.

  5. Furman is legit. I live out here in Oklahoma. It is a system fit for this defense. Not saying that he couldn't get it done on the next level.
